[Compiz] [Bug 833729] Re: compiz crashed with SIGSEGV in CompositeScreen::compositingActive()

2012-03-22 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Confirmed from Jason Warner that the cause of the problem is:
compiz (composite) - Error: Screen 0 on display ":0" already has a compositing
manager; try using the --replace option to replace the current compositing
manager.
 error CompositeScreen::CompositeScreen - line 278

The unusual thing is that for some people running precise, the composite
plugin can't load because some other compositing manager is running. But
we can't see one running yet! Looks like the atom/selection used to
indicate that one is running is being leaked somewhere.

This is an unusual failure. The fact that it caused crashes is probably
not unusual -- most plugins have probably not been written well enough
to handle the case where composite fails. So we can fix the plugins, but
that's a different issue.

The root cause of the problem is that something is leaking the atom
"_NET_WM_CM_S0", which should not be possible if no compositing manager
is running.

[Compiz] [Bug 962562] [NEW] terminal window gets square corners after being maximized

2012-03-22 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

After having maximized to fullscreen the terminal window and re-
minimized it, its corners are squared and not rounded anymore. It
happens one time evey two: when I maximize the window with square
corners and re-minimize it, it gets the original round corners.
Repeating this procedure gets square corners and so on...

Using Ubuntu 11.10 64bit with all updates, upgraded from 11.04.

Public bug reported:

Booted into GNome classic. Compiz crashed while moving windows with the
mouse holding down mb1. The moving was rather stuttery with the title
bar lagging behing the window movement. If the window was moved quickly,
the mouse disconnected from the title bar but still had connection with
the window. In other words, I could still move the window even though
the mouse pointer was not on the tilte bar.

Comiz eventually crashed when when quickly moving the window left to
right and visa vera via the mouse. I could not repeat once compiz
restarted.

This might be caused by some outdated packages which were installed on
your system at the time of the report. Please upgrade your system to the
latest package versions. If you still encounter the crash, please file a

[Compiz] [Bug 961124] Re: Choppy video playback

2012-03-22 Thread Chauncellor
Thanks for the speedy reply. It appears, based on comment 2, that this
is indeed not window manager-based but rather a problem with the ATI
drivers. I'm going to go ahead and reassign.

Other possibilities are bad decoding libraries but I doubt it as you
tried with both Totem (gstreamer) and VLC (ffmpeg).

[Compiz] [Bug 962545] [NEW] Context menus change vertical size

2012-03-22 Thread Alan Pope
Public bug reported:

Sometimes context menus grow and shrink when you move the mouse up and
down them. I have had this on two machines, one desktop and one laptop,
both running compiz from the unity team ppa.

alan@wopr:~$ apt-cache policy compiz
compiz:
  Installed: 1:0.9.7.2-0ubuntu1~ppa2
  Candidate: 1:0.9.7.2-0ubuntu1~ppa2
  Version table:
 *** 1:0.9.7.2-0ubuntu1~ppa2 0

100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 1:0.9.7.0+bzr3035-0ubuntu1 0
500 http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise/main amd64 Packages

Tried filing the bug with ubuntu-bug compiz but it wouldn't let me,
because it's not an official package.

[Compiz] [Bug 927243] Re: Search bar disappears when you "stick" the window to the side of the screen

2012-03-22 Thread Chauncellor
Ah, I just did this at 1024x768 (hadn't done it at a low-enough
resolution) and it does trigger on 12.04.

Regardless, I think this not a compiz bug since it's doing what it's
supposed to. Software-center should provide functionality for handling
this (should it desire to) and, most importantly, have a smaller minimum
resolution size.

I think that if the issue is for compiz to be forbidden to forcibly put
windows below their minimum size, there should be another bug
specifically for that as I interpret this report to be specifically
about software-center's search bar mishaps.

Sorry for all the noise in the last few posts, by the way.

** Changed in: compiz (Ubuntu)
   Status: Incomplete => Invalid

** Description changed:

  To reproduce:
- 1. take your window, drag it to one side of the screen, or the other, so that
it "sticks"/"pins" to the side of your screen.
+ 1. Using a lower resolution monitor, take your window, drag it to one side of
the screen, or the other, so that it "sticks"/"pins" to the side of your screen.

You will now notice that the search bar is missing, it is my thoughts
that this is happening because when you pin the window to the side of
- the screen it makes it smaller than it is supposed to go. The best fix
- might be to make it so the search bar can expand and shrink with the
- window, perhaps.
+ the screen it makes it smaller than it is supposed to go.

- Description: Ubuntu 11.10
- Release: 11.10
+ screenshot: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/software-
+ center/+bug/927243/+attachment/2717132/+files/software%20center%20bug.png
+
+ This is because Compiz is forcing the window to be smaller than the
+ minimum software center window size.
+
+ The best fix might be to make it so the search bar can expand and shrink
+ with the window, perhaps.
+
+ Release:11.10 + 12.04

- Installed: 5.0.4
+   Installed: 5.0.4

Seeing that you have an nvidia 7900 card, you can also try invoking
"Additional Drivers" via the dash and activating the nvidia 'post-
release updates' and then restart. There are fresher releases of
nvidia's drivers out there. I'm running the same drivers you are on
Oneiric as well (albeit with a gtx560) with no problems :/.

[Compiz] [Bug 833729] Re: compiz crashed with SIGSEGV in CompositeScreen::compositingActive()

2012-03-22 Thread Łukasz Zemczak
We saw from one log batch that after such a crash (not exit(1), but
after a SIGSEGV) gnome-session tried restarting compiz a few times, but
still wasn't able to start it for good. So I'm afraid that even if an
exit(1) is fired, compiz will still be unable to start correctly. But at
least we won't have an ugly crash but a graceful exit.

"exit(1)" - that may be the best quick fix. There is too much flaky

[Compiz] [Bug 833729] Re: compiz crashed with SIGSEGV in CompositeScreen::compositingActive()

2012-03-22 Thread Alan Griffiths
There are two elements to this:

/1/ a fairly unusual error condition that I've yet to identify; and,
/2/ poor error handling in compiz

The error condition causes CompositeScreen::CompositeScreen to call
setFailed() - which should simply cause the composite plugin to fail
loading (and normally would).

However, the opengl tries to find the composite plugin which implicitly
loads it again. But this failure isn't handled gracefully and results
in the segfault.

If the error were handled gracefully then compiz would be still missing
some plugins (composite and opengl for two). So more research into /1/
is needed.

Meanwhile I'll fix /2/

[Compiz] [Bug 957786] Re: [nvidia] Windows keep opening in another monitor

2012-03-22 Thread Chauncellor
Definitely a compiz bug. Using Nouveau and tested on Unity2D and gnome-
shell, both of which do not use compiz.

There are certain windows that always open in the second monitor, many
of which can be seen in this video: open/save dialogues, images (via Eye
of Gnome), and the system settings (not pictured). Others, such as new
terminals, videos (via totem), and new text documents open in the
focused monitor. This is a small sample portion of windows opening on
other screens.

** Description changed:

I have 1 monitor and an LCD TV arranged in as a dual monitor setup with an
nvidia card.
Ubuntu's display preferences doesn’t recognise the monitors, so I have to use
Nvidia settings.

The system works but with unity 3d windows keep poping in the monitor
I'm not using. It's silly. Because I only turn on the TV when I want to
see video, I can't use the system unless I have the other monitor on.

Because this is impractical I switched to Unity 2D were this behaviour
  doesn't happen.

Unity 3D should to open windows in the monitor with the focus, or at least
give that choice.
This behavior also hapens in Ubuntu 11.10.

[Compiz] [Bug 910063] Re: Second window of EOG does not has focus when opened from Nautilus

Compiz bug, not unity. I also made a short screencast of this (which
still affects 12.04 up to date).

** Changed in: compiz (Ubuntu)

** Description changed:

The first time, an image is opened from Nautilus by EOG, focus is
correctly changed to EOG. But when you return to Nautilus, and open a
*second* image, focus stays with Nautilus. A user has to click into the
window to move the focus to EOG.

This problem is especially cumbersome when EOG is opened maximized: a
user can not see that the global menu which is unhidden when moving the
mouse to the title bar, is *not* the menu of EOG (it is the menu of
Nautilus...). When trying to close EOG, a user *actually* closes the
former window (= Nautilus). Because the user see nothing changing
(because a hidden window underneath is closed), he clicks another time

to Nautilus, but he will not find it.

- I don't have to explain how confusing this is.

[Compiz] [Bug 954153] Re: compiz crashed with SIGSEGV

2012-03-22 Thread Chauncellor
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

However, processing it in order to get sufficient information for the
developers failed (it does not generate an useful symbolic stack trace).
This might be caused by some outdated packages which were installed on
your system at the time of the report. Please upgrade your system to the
latest package versions. If you still encounter the crash, please file a
new report.

Thank you for your understanding, and sorry for the inconvenience!

[Compiz] [Bug 962085] [NEW] [0.9.7.2] gtk-window-decorator receives BadWindow errors

2012-03-22 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Public bug reported:

That was not happening with 0.9.7.0 r3035 but is happening regularly
with 0.9.7.2 from staging, the decorator exits with

"The program 'gtk-window-decorator' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)'.
  (Details: serial 43121 error_code 3 request_code 20 minor_code 0)"

it happened so far when:
- closing a dialog
- closing an application
- changing workspace
- right click on the decorator bar

i.e seems to happen randomnly

I tried to get a stracktrace by breaking on gdk_x_error but the decorate
hits an XError every time something is closed which makes it impossible
to debug it this way...
