[Compiz] [Bug 833729] Re: compiz crashed with SIGSEGV in CompositeScreen::compositingActive()
Confirmed from Jason Warner that the cause of the problem is: compiz (composite) - Error: Screen 0 on display ":0" already has a compositing manager; try using the --replace option to replace the current compositing manager. error CompositeScreen::CompositeScreen - line 278 The unusual thing is that for some people running precise, the composite plugin can't load because some other compositing manager is running. But we can't see one running yet! Looks like the atom/selection used to indicate that one is running is being leaked somewhere. This is an unusual failure. The fact that it caused crashes is probably not unusual -- most plugins have probably not been written well enough to handle the case where composite fails. So we can fix the plugins, but that's a different issue. The root cause of the problem is that something is leaking the atom "_NET_WM_CM_S0", which should not be possible if no compositing manager is running. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of compiz packagers, which is subscribed to compiz in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/833729 Title: compiz crashed with SIGSEGV in CompositeScreen::compositingActive() To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/compiz-core/+bug/833729/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~compiz Post to : compiz@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~compiz More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Compiz] [Bug 927243] Re: Search bar disappears when you "stick" the window to the side of the screen
Ah, I just did this at 1024x768 (hadn't done it at a low-enough resolution) and it does trigger on 12.04. Regardless, I think this not a compiz bug since it's doing what it's supposed to. Software-center should provide functionality for handling this (should it desire to) and, most importantly, have a smaller minimum resolution size. I think that if the issue is for compiz to be forbidden to forcibly put windows below their minimum size, there should be another bug specifically for that as I interpret this report to be specifically about software-center's search bar mishaps. Sorry for all the noise in the last few posts, by the way. ** Changed in: compiz (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Invalid ** Description changed: To reproduce: - 1. take your window, drag it to one side of the screen, or the other, so that it "sticks"/"pins" to the side of your screen. + 1. Using a lower resolution monitor, take your window, drag it to one side of the screen, or the other, so that it "sticks"/"pins" to the side of your screen. You will now notice that the search bar is missing, it is my thoughts that this is happening because when you pin the window to the side of - the screen it makes it smaller than it is supposed to go. The best fix - might be to make it so the search bar can expand and shrink with the - window, perhaps. + the screen it makes it smaller than it is supposed to go. - Description: Ubuntu 11.10 - Release: 11.10 + screenshot: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/software- + center/+bug/927243/+attachment/2717132/+files/software%20center%20bug.png + + This is because Compiz is forcing the window to be smaller than the + minimum software center window size. + + The best fix might be to make it so the search bar can expand and shrink + with the window, perhaps. + + Release:11.10 + 12.04 software-center: - Installed: 5.0.4 + Installed: 5.0.4 ** Changed in: software-center (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => Triaged -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of compiz packagers, which is subscribed to compiz in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/927243 Title: Search bar disappears when you "stick" the window to the side of the screen To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/927243/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~compiz Post to : compiz@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~compiz More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

We saw from one log batch that after such a crash (not exit(1), but after a SIGSEGV) gnome-session tried restarting compiz a few times, but still wasn't able to start it for good. [Compiz] [Bug 833729] Re: compiz crashed with SIGSEGV in CompositeScreen::compositingActive()
There are two elements to this: /1/ a fairly unusual error condition that I've yet to identify; and, /2/ poor error handling in compiz The error condition causes CompositeScreen::CompositeScreen to call setFailed() - which should simply cause the composite plugin to fail loading (and normally would). However, the opengl tries to find the composite plugin which implicitly loads it again. But this failure isn't handled gracefully and results in the segfault. If the error were handled gracefully then compiz would be still missing some plugins (composite and opengl for two). So more research into /1/ is needed. Meanwhile I'll fix /2/ -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of compiz packagers, which is subscribed to compiz in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/833729 Title: compiz crashed with SIGSEGV in CompositeScreen::compositingActive() To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/compiz-core/+bug/833729/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~compiz Post to : compiz@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~compiz More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Compiz] [Bug 957786] Re: [nvidia] Windows keep opening in another monitor
Definitely a compiz bug. Using Nouveau and tested on Unity2D and gnome- shell, both of which do not use compiz. There are certain windows that always open in the second monitor, many of which can be seen in this video: open/save dialogues, images (via Eye of Gnome), and the system settings (not pictured). Others, such as new terminals, videos (via totem), and new text documents open in the focused monitor. This is a small sample portion of windows opening on other screens. ** Attachment added: "bug.ogv" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/957786/+attachment/2916322/+files/bug.ogv ** Changed in: compiz (Ubuntu) Status: New => Triaged ** Description changed: I have 1 monitor and an LCD TV arranged in as a dual monitor setup with an nvidia card. Ubuntu's display preferences doesn’t recognise the monitors, so I have to use Nvidia settings. The system works but with unity 3d windows keep poping in the monitor I'm not using. It's silly. Because I only turn on the TV when I want to see video, I can't use the system unless I have the other monitor on. Because this is impractical I switched to Unity 2D were this behaviour doesn't happen. Unity 3D should to open windows in the monitor with the focus, or at least give that choice.
