[Compiz] [Bug 988079] Re: [nvidia] Dismal compiz performance on HP Z600 with 30 landscape monitor

2012-06-04 Thread Thomas Bushnell, BSG
Daniel, this isn't only a performance bug; it's a correctness bug. One
consequence of this is, for example, outright rendering errors in
chrome. (IOW, we need this in an SRU for precise).

[Compiz] [Bug 988079] Re: [nvidia] Dismal compiz performance on HP Z600 with 30 landscape monitor

2012-06-04 Thread Sam Spilsbury
Kenneth,

smspillaz@interpol:~$ glxgears
Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be
approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate.
297 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.317 FPS

At least on nvidia here, it seems like you can check if the operation
took effect by quickly running glxgears.

Thomas,

In terms of rendering errors, there are all kinds of rendering errors
that could possibly occurr - the most likely is probably tearing in the
application due to VSync being turned off in the driver by default. I
don't think other rendering errors would really be related to /this/
particular bug, a new bug should be filed for that if its not just
tearing.

I added a video capture of this issue to #966547, before marking that
bug as duplicate of this one. Hope that helps for fixing it.

@Éric: I would agree to the expected behavious you proposed. I would add
that if the window is maximized by dragging it to the top, it should
maximize to the monitor it is dragged to (compared to the behaviour seen
in the video capture).

[Compiz] [Bug 990909] Re: [regression][precise] Focus-follow-mouse is no longer compatible with fullscreen Flash

2012-06-04 Thread Paddy Launch
This affects me too. I find that if you repeatedly click on maximize,
eventually (on the 4th or 5th click), the maximization will stick. Not
ideal, but a workaround of sorts :)

I'm slightly concerned that Ubuntu is officially deprecating the notion
of focus follows mouse and therefore won't fix this. After all, it is
not possible to select focus follows without installing the non-standard
config-compiz.

[Compiz] [Bug 862430] Re: window flicker for a short time after switching workspaces

2012-06-04 Thread quequotion
Serrano Joshua

Serrano is partially correct, as this is not the appropriate place to
discuss compilation issues.

Unfortunately, as I have pointed out in bug 880649, the wiki is (mostly)
out of date.

For up-to-date compilation instructions, take a look at:

http://wiki.compiz.org/C%2B%2BCompiling

The compiz forums would would be a better place to discuss compilation problems.
Unfortunately they have been in disuse since sometime 2011.

[Compiz] [Bug 988079] Re: [nvidia] Dismal compiz performance on HP Z600 with 30 landscape monitor

2012-06-04 Thread Kenneth Russell
Sam,

I re-verified that Sync to VBlank was set in nvidia-settings and the
OpenGL panel of CCSM, and that Force full screen redraws was set in
the Workarounds panel of CCSM.

glxgears claims to be synced to the vertical refresh, and doesn't claim
to be running faster than 60 FPS. However, when maximizing glxgears, it
claims to be getting better than 15 FPS, but visually, it's getting a
much worse frame rate -- there is very bad temporal aliasing.

296 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.008 FPS
110 frames in 5.0 seconds = 21.856 FPS
85 frames in 5.1 seconds = 16.796 FPS
87 frames in 5.1 seconds = 17.004 FPS
89 frames in 5.0 seconds = 17.682 FPS

When logged in to gnome-shell (GNOME Classic (No effects) at the login
menu), glxgears runs smoothly when maximized:

302 frames in 5.0 seconds = 60.229 FPS
299 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.605 FPS
300 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.805 FPS

Finally, when run under gnome-shell with compiz (GNOME at the login
menu), glxgears claims to get about the same FPS as under Unity, but the
animation seen on-screen is smoother than under Unity. It's nowhere near
as smooth as with compiz disabled however.

232 frames in 5.0 seconds = 46.336 FPS
89 frames in 5.1 seconds = 17.614 FPS
89 frames in 5.0 seconds = 17.744 FPS
90 frames in 5.0 seconds = 17.931 FPS

The default window manager settings for both Unity and GNOME were used,
so I don't think any additional effects are being enabled when run under
Unity vs. under GNOME.

[Compiz] [Bug 803943] Re: compiz consuming a lot of cpu

2012-06-04 Thread Dimitri Nüscheler
When disabling vsync I have an additional problem next to tearing, which
makes performance sluggish and increases tearing even more. Ubuntu
wrongly thinks that my screens refresh rate is 50 when it is 60. Forcing
compositing to 60hz improves the experience a lot. It's probably not as
good as vsync, but it's very comfortable. I was never a big fan of vsync
though, because it always at's a tiny tiny little delay. it's not
instantanously.

[Compiz] [Bug 1008022] Re: Gnome-panel disappears when switching desktop

2012-06-04 Thread Jochen Fahrner
** Description changed:

- With compiz gnome panels with autohide do only open on desktop 1, not on
- any other virtual desktop. So if you switch to desktop 2 you cannot
- switch back to desktop 1 or even logout because the panels do not open.
- This problem only exists with compiz, not with metacity. So I think this
- is a bug in compiz.
+ When using Gnome classic (compiz version) the panels disappear after
switching to another virtual desktop. Even if you switch back to desktop 1 via
cursor keys, the panel remain hidden. So you have no way to do anything (start
applications, logout or shutdown).
+ This happens only in the compiz version, not with metacity (Gnome classic no
effects). So I think it is a bug with compiz.

[Compiz] [Bug 1007976] Re: Windows jump to different workspace when switching workspace

2012-06-04 Thread roots
Same problem here: I'm using 6 viewports (2 rows, 3 columns) in Ubuntu 12.04
running Gnome Classic with Compiz.
It appears that the bug is at least to some extent related to workspace
switcher applet in panel.

Even more:

1.) A _maximized_ window on a center viewport (that is, upper-center or
lower-center) will jump to the corresponding left viewport as soon as:

-switching from center viewport to right viewport, either by key or by
mouse edge flipping

2.) Even worse: ANY _maximized_ window on a center viewport (that is,
upper-center and lower-center) will jump to the corresponding left
viewport as soon as:

-another application window is launched on either of the right viewports
(upper right or lower right).

Bug 1.) does not occur if workspace switcher applet is permanently removed from
panel.
Bug 2.) still occurs, having tested any seemingly relevant ccsm settings.

Serrano, could you please test the 'workaround' for Bug 1, and try to
reproduce Bug 2.?! Thanks.

Any help welcome.

Regards,
roots

Just a further note: This does also happens with almost-maximised
windows, that is, manually scaled to just a couple of pixels smaller
than the desktop size (screen resolution minus top bottom panel) ...

[Compiz] [Bug 1007976] Re: Windows jump to different workspace when switching workspace

2012-06-04 Thread Serrano Pereira
roots,

1.) I can confirm that window jumping does not occur after removing the
Workspace Switcher applet from the panel. Could it be a bug in the
Workspace Switcher applet?

2.) I cannot confirm behavior 2, where another application window is
launched on a right viewport causes maximized windows to jump. This also
does not happen when the Workspace Switcher applet is enabled.

3.) In my case, window jumping does not occur with almost-maximized
windows.

[Compiz] [Bug 1007976] Re: Windows jump to different workspace when switching workspace

2012-06-04 Thread Serrano Pereira
** Description changed:

This bug happens in Gnome Classic when the Ubuntu Unity plugin is
- disabled in Compiz. You must also have at least three
- workspaces/desktops horizontally in order to reproduce this.
+ disabled in Compiz and the Workspace Switcher applet is added to the
+ panel. You must also have at least three workspaces/desktops
+ horizontally in order to reproduce this.

When a maximized window is on workspace #2 or higher (horizontally), and
you move to a workspace on the right of the window, all maximized
windows on the left of that workspace jump to the workspace on the far
  left (workspace #1).

  Steps to reproduce:
  1) Choose Gnome Classic at the login screen and log in.
- 2) Use `ccsm' (CompizConfig Settings Manager) to disable the Ubuntu Unity
plugin. Also make sure that Horizontal Virtual Size is set to at least 3 in
General Options. Optionally, enable the Desktop Wall plugin to easily
switch between workspaces.
- 2) Say we have four workspaces horizontally (numbered 1 to 4). Place a
maximized window on workspace #2 (doesn't matter which application, but it must
be maximized).
- 3) Use Ctrl+Alt+arrow-key (or Expo) to move to a workspace on the right
(workspace #3 or #4).
+ 2) Add the Workspace Switcher applet to the panel ([Super+]Alt+right-click on
panel to add it).
+ 3) Use `ccsm' (CompizConfig Settings Manager) to disable the Ubuntu Unity
plugin. Also make sure that Horizontal Virtual Size is set to at least 3 in
General Options. Optionally, enable the Desktop Wall plugin to easily
switch between workspaces.
+ 4) Say we have four workspaces horizontally (numbered 1 to 4). Place a
maximized window on workspace #2 (doesn't matter which application, but it must
be maximized).
+ 5) Use Ctrl+Alt+arrow-key (or Expo) to move to a workspace on the right
(workspace #3 or #4).

Result: The window that was previously on workspace #2 is now on workspace #1.
Expected result: The window should stay on workspace #2.

[Compiz] [Bug 862430] Re: window flicker for a short time after switching workspaces

2012-06-04 Thread Smeagol
I had the same bug since 11.10, and the PPA fixed the flicker but I got the
white unfocused windows with my nvidia card.
But thanks!!! It's really good to see that the fix is going in the right way.

Any chance that any futher fix also includes the fix of the bug 933776
(Scale all windows not working )? because I cannot use both PPAs fixes
at the same time... (or I just don't know how to do it)

[Compiz] [Bug 1007857] [NEW] window animations are far from smooth

2012-06-04 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Window animations (e.g. when you maximize/minimize a window) are very, very
jerky. Note they are not slow, it's just they are not smooth.
My computer has definitely enough CPU and GPU power to render those animations
smoothly, and this happens even when there's no program using significant
system resources.

This defeats the very purpose of those animations, which is to provide a
more fluid user experience.

I know they are a mostly aesthetic feature and I am the last person who
would like to see such a feature take resources from more important
things, but either they can be made decently smooth without affecting
system performance, or they cannot, in which case they should be removed
altogether.

No window animation is _way_ better than a jerky window animation.

[Compiz] [Bug 1008515] [NEW] Compiz crash on resume from suspend w/ NVIDIA 302.11 driver

2012-06-04 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I upgraded to the nvidia 302.11 drivers to test out xrandr functionality
on my MacbookPro3,1. I found that compiz crashes on resume from suspend
with these drivers. This is reliably reproducible on my system (8600M
GT).

To reproduce:
1) Purge nvidia-current and nvidia-settings
2) Install nvidia-current 302.11-0ubuntu1~xedgers~precise2 and nvidia-settings
302.11-0ubuntu1~xedgers~precise1 from the xorg edgers PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa
3) Reboot. The machine boots normally
4) Suspend the machine
5) Wake from suspend

Expected results:
Machine resumes to the lightdm unlock screen

Actual results:
Screen turns on but remains black; mouse cursor appears. Mouse cursor flashes
rapidly (5-10Hz). The system stays in this state for at least a minute.

While the system was in this state I switched to another VT to login and
poke around. I saw that there was a compiz segfault at the time of
resume noted in dmesg, and compiz was not running.

The system may recover to a lightdm login prompt without intervention,
allowing you to login to your running apps. If this works, unity may not
be running - you may be prompted by apport that compiz crashed.

[Compiz] [Bug 741869] [NEW] Unity/compiz intercepts Super and Alt keypresses from grabbed windows like VMs.

2012-06-04 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: unity

After upgrading from Maverick to Natty, I can no longer use the Super
(windows) key in Virtual Machine Manager. Previously, as long as I had
the Virtual Machine Manager console window in the foreground, I could
press the Super key and the start menu would pop up. Since upgrading to
Natty, this no longer works, and the search box appears in the upper
left.

[Compiz] [Bug 741869] Re: Unity/compiz intercepts Super and Alt keypresses from grabbed windows like VMs.

2012-06-04 Thread Daniel van Vugt
As mentioned in duplicate bug 806255:
---
FYI, the root cause of this bug appears to be because compiz uses
XkbStateNotify, which is part of the X Keyboard Extension. Using this extension
has the unfortunate side-effect (by design) of ignoring grabs held by other
clients and still giving you key events even when you shouldn't be receiving
them. This is documented is the spec:

As with all Xkb events, XkbStateNotify events are reported to all interested
clients without regard to the current keyboard input focus or grab state.
---
The only remaining fix for this bug is to rewrite the modifier handling code in
compiz to not use XkbStateNotify at all. Because that is the root cause of this
bug. However that's a very large and risky change we can't afford to do for a
while. :(
---

** Summary changed:

- Pressing the Super (windows) key while in full screen virtual machine or
remoting apps no longer works

VMs.

[Compiz] [Bug 878516] Re: Restoring a grid-placed window by dragging the title bar downwards does not restore the original window width

2012-06-04 Thread Daniel van Vugt
That wasn't Sam that changed the importance. It was a script he wrote to
migrate bugs from compiz-core to compiz.

Obviously resetting the importance field was a small bug in the script.
