[Compiz] [Bug 988079] Re: [nvidia] Dismal compiz performance on HP Z600 with 30 landscape monitor
Daniel, this isn't only a performance bug; it's a correctness bug. One consequence of this is, for example, outright rendering errors in chrome. [Compiz] [Bug 988079] Re: [nvidia] Dismal compiz performance on HP Z600 with 30 landscape monitor
Kenneth, smspillaz@interpol:~$ glxgears Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate. 297 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.317 FPS At least on nvidia here, it seems like you can check if the operation took effect by quickly running glxgears. Thomas, In terms of rendering errors, there are all kinds of rendering errors that could possibly occurr - the most likely is probably tearing in the application due to VSync being turned off in the driver by default. I don't think other rendering errors would really be related to /this/ particular bug, a new bug should be filed for that if its not just tearing. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of compiz packagers, which is subscribed to compiz in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/988079 Title: [nvidia] Dismal compiz performance on HP Z600 with 30 landscape monitor To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/compiz/+bug/988079/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~compiz Post to : compiz@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~compiz More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

This affects me too. I find that if you repeatedly click on maximize, eventually (on the 4th or 5th click), the maximization will stick. [Compiz] [Bug 988079] Re: [nvidia] Dismal compiz performance on HP Z600 with 30 landscape monitor
Sam, I re-verified that Sync to VBlank was set in nvidia-settings and the OpenGL panel of CCSM, and that Force full screen redraws was set in the Workarounds panel of CCSM. glxgears claims to be synced to the vertical refresh, and doesn't claim to be running faster than 60 FPS. However, when maximizing glxgears, it claims to be getting better than 15 FPS, but visually, it's getting a much worse frame rate -- there is very bad temporal aliasing. 296 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.008 FPS 110 frames in 5.0 seconds = 21.856 FPS 85 frames in 5.1 seconds = 16.796 FPS 87 frames in 5.1 seconds = 17.004 FPS 89 frames in 5.0 seconds = 17.682 FPS When logged in to gnome-shell (GNOME Classic (No effects) at the login menu), glxgears runs smoothly when maximized: 302 frames in 5.0 seconds = 60.229 FPS 299 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.605 FPS 300 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.805 FPS Finally, when run under gnome-shell with compiz (GNOME at the login menu), glxgears claims to get about the same FPS as under Unity, but the animation seen on-screen is smoother than under Unity. It's nowhere near as smooth as with compiz disabled however. 232 frames in 5.0 seconds = 46.336 FPS 89 frames in 5.1 seconds = 17.614 FPS 89 frames in 5.0 seconds = 17.744 FPS 90 frames in 5.0 seconds = 17.931 FPS The default window manager settings for both Unity and GNOME were used, so I don't think any additional effects are being enabled when run under Unity vs. under GNOME.

When disabling vsync I have an additional problem next to tearing, which makes performance sluggish and increases tearing even more. Same problem here: I'm using 6 viewports (2 rows, 3 columns) in Ubuntu 12.04 running Gnome Classic with Compiz. Even worse: ANY _maximized_ window on a center viewport (that is, upper-center and lower-center) will jump to the corresponding left viewport as soon as: -another application window is launched on either of the right viewports (upper right or lower right). Bug 1.) does not occur if workspace switcher applet is permanently removed from panel. Bug 2.) still occurs, having tested any seemingly relevant ccsm settings. Place a maximized window on workspace #2 (doesn't matter which application, but it must be maximized). + 5) Use Ctrl+Alt+arrow-key (or Expo) to move to a workspace on the right (workspace #3 or #4). Result: The window that was previously on workspace #2 is now on workspace #1. Expected result: The window should stay on workspace #2. [Compiz] [Bug 1007857] [NEW] window animations are far from smooth
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Window animations (e.g. when you maximize/minimize a window) are very, very jerky. Note they are not slow, it's just they are not smooth. My computer has definitely enough CPU and GPU power to render those animations smoothly, and this happens even when there's no program using significant system resources. This defeats the very purpose of those animations, which is to provide a more fluid user experience. I know they are a mostly aesthetic feature and I am the last person who would like to see such a feature take resources from more important things, but either they can be made decently smooth without affecting system performance, or they cannot, in which case they should be removed altogether. No window animation is _way_ better than a jerky window animation. [Compiz] [Bug 1008515] [NEW] Compiz crash on resume from suspend w/ NVIDIA 302.11 driver
You have been subscribed to a public bug: I upgraded to the nvidia 302.11 drivers to test out xrandr functionality on my MacbookPro3,1. I found that compiz crashes on resume from suspend with these drivers. This is reliably reproducible on my system (8600M GT). To reproduce: 1) Purge nvidia-current and nvidia-settings 2) Install nvidia-current 302.11-0ubuntu1~xedgers~precise2 and nvidia-settings 302.11-0ubuntu1~xedgers~precise1 from the xorg edgers PPA: https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa 3) Reboot. The machine boots normally 4) Suspend the machine 5) Wake from suspend Expected results: Machine resumes to the lightdm unlock screen Actual results: Screen turns on but remains black; mouse cursor appears. Mouse cursor flashes rapidly (5-10Hz). The system stays in this state for at least a minute. While the system was in this state I switched to another VT to login and poke around. I saw that there was a compiz segfault at the time of resume noted in dmesg, and compiz was not running. The system may recover to a lightdm login prompt without intervention, allowing you to login to your running apps. If this works, unity may not be running - you may be prompted by apport that compiz crashed. dmesg output: [10586.962722] compiz[5427]: segfault at 0 ip 408ebd72 sp 7fff5ee4ddc8 error 4 in glmOpzJd (deleted)[408ea000+2000] syslog: Jun 4 09:06:25 steve-laptop gnome-session[1998]: WARNING: Application 'compiz.desktop' killed by signal Jun 4 09:06:25 steve-laptop gnome-session[1998]: WARNING: App 'compiz.desktop' respawning too quickly Jun 4 09:06:25 steve-laptop gnome-session[1998]: CRITICAL: We failed, but the fail whale is dead. [Compiz] [Bug 741869] Re: Unity/compiz intercepts Super and Alt keypresses from grabbed windows like VMs.
As mentioned in duplicate bug 806255: --- FYI, the root cause of this bug appears to be because compiz uses XkbStateNotify, which is part of the X Keyboard Extension. Using this extension has the unfortunate side-effect (by design) of ignoring grabs held by other clients and still giving you key events even when you shouldn't be receiving them. This is documented is the spec: As with all Xkb events, XkbStateNotify events are reported to all interested clients without regard to the current keyboard input focus or grab state. [http://www.x.org/releases/X11R7.6/doc/libX11/specs/XKB/xkblib.html] --- The only remaining fix for this bug is to rewrite the modifier handling code in compiz to not use XkbStateNotify at all. Because that is the root cause of this bug. [Compiz] [Bug 878516] Re: Restoring a grid-placed window by dragging the title bar downwards does not restore the original window width
