[Compiz] [Bug 1017374] Re: Windows snap back to edges of screen
I'm experiencing exactly the same window dragging bug as described and shown by rawdmon, on a single monitor with two workspaces and the Desktop Wall plugin (no cube). Moving windows across workspaces loses track of their exact position. I do think however that this is not the original bug... it's probably more related to this one: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/771448 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of compiz packagers, which is subscribed to compiz in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1017374 Title: Windows snap back to edges of screen To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/1017374/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~compiz Post to : compiz@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~compiz More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Compiz] [Bug 771448] Re: desktop wall edge flipping broken
On a fresh 12.04 install after configuring the Desktop Wall with ccsm, window moving shows erratic behaviour. In the Edge Flipping tab, enabling Edge Flip Move and dragging windows across workspaces loses track of the windows position, "lagging" behind a random amount of pixels (somewhat correlated to the movement speed) up to a whole monitor width, which effectively loses the window and needs it to be killed. This has also started conflicting with the Place Windows plugin, which makes the window jump around freakishly when dragging across the edge, so these two have become exclusive. Applying the above suggestions in the Bindings tab yields no success. Turning the Unity plugin on/off doesn't help the case either. Increasing the mouse polling intervall renders the Enhanced Zoom Desktop unusable, but doesn't improve the situation. With these three IMO quite essential plugins broken (the zoom has no anti-aliasing toggle anymore) Ubuntu stays way below it's potential... I for one can't make use of 12.04 (or the 11.x versions fwiw). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of compiz packagers, which is subscribed to compiz in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/771448 Title: desktop wall edge flipping broken To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/771448/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~compiz Post to : compiz@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~compiz More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Compiz] [Bug 1018105] [NEW] Tearing in Unity with Nvidia GTX670 (vsync failure)
Public bug reported: Dragging windows around, playing video (vdpau, xv, gl) and OpenGL all suffer of tearing even if the application (or nvidia-settings) has Sync to VBlank (vsync) enabled. A tearing break consistently appears approximately on the same position, about 40 % from the top of the screen. This bug is seen with Nvidia proprietary drivers but googling suggests that it does not depend on the GPU or its driver but that it is actually a design issue with the compositing managers. Forcing the GPU into performance mode with nvidia-settings makes no difference (with my old GPU this would often solve tearing problems). Toggling full screen mode also doesn't appear to change anything. Symptoms: - Application-side (per window) vsync is working fine * Window dragging, video playback and OpenGL all behave the same - Full screen OpenGL works fine * Compositing bypassed? - Compositing fails: compiz attempts syncing but the timing is wrong * If it was not syncing at all, the tear lines would "move" randomly * The buffer swap should occur during vertical blanking, not during screen refresh Workarounds: - Disable compositing (use different WM) System: - Ubuntu 12.04 LTS - Nvidia drivers 295.49 - MSI GTX670 - Compiz 0.9.7.8 - Unity 5.12.0 ** Affects: compiz (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of compiz packagers, which is subscribed to compiz in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1018105 Title: Tearing in Unity with Nvidia GTX670 (vsync failure) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/1018105/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~compiz Post to : compiz@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~compiz More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Compiz] [Bug 1017374] Re: Windows snap back to edges of screen
I've attached a video of what I'm describing. You'll notice near the end of the video that the window completely snaps away from my cursor even though I'm still grabbing it (it ends up on a different virtual desktop than the one I'm on). You'll also notice maximized windows snapping to the second monitor when moving them between desktops and snapping to the edge when half-way between two virtual desktops instead of staying in their original position. ** Attachment added: "window_snap.ogv" https://bugs.launchpad.net/compiz/+bug/1017374/+attachment/3204974/+files/window_snap.ogv -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of compiz packagers, which is subscribed to compiz in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1017374 Title: Windows snap back to edges of screen To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/1017374/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~compiz Post to : compiz@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~compiz More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Compiz] [Bug 1017374] Re: Windows snap back to edges of screen
I should add that I am using a Radeon HD5450 with dual monitors running Ubuntu 12.04 with unity disabled (installed gnome-panel). If I use the ctrl-shift-alt-left/right shortcut to move a window between virtual desktops instead of the window staying in it's original position on the new desktop like it used to do it snaps to the edge. I'm not sure if this only affects systems with dual monitors, but it reduces usability quite considerably. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of compiz packagers, which is subscribed to compiz in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1017374 Title: Windows snap back to edges of screen To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/1017374/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~compiz Post to : compiz@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~compiz More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Compiz] [Bug 1017374] Re: Windows snap back to edges of screen
This bug affects me as well but not when resizing windows. If I take a window and drag it to the edge of a screen to initiate a cube rotate, when the windows makes it to the next side of the cube it snaps down to the bottom of the screen (so that there's now space between my cursor and the top of the window). Also, if I place a window between two virtual desktops and initiate a cube rotate, compiz snaps that window back in to one of the two desktops. This is the first time I've seen this behaviour in compiz, it never used to do this.

You have been subscribed to a public bug: When a window is at the edge of the screen and is resized to full screen. When you later resize to nolonger being full screen, when you try to move the weindow to a new location away from the edge of teh screen the window will snap back to the edge of the screen it was originally against when if was first sized to full screen. It happens with all the programs I have tested it with, including, but not limited to, Firefox, xterm, and mplayer. I'm using Gnome Classic. Another issue is there is no bug reporting option under the menuing system. I had to figure outr what the bug reporting tool was then invoke the bug reporting command (ubuntu-bug) via the command line in an xterm. Third, I should have had a screen provided by the bug reporting tool (ubuntu-bug) to enter this data. It would have made much better sense to collect the data them. As is I had to wait well over a minute for this screen to show up so I could describe the actual fault. [Compiz] [Bug 1017510] Re: Window management - window animations are too fast for some people to see.
@vanvugt; this is something we can easily user test to find the optimum value ;-) If you could expose the three variables I have added to the bug report, plus a 'Magic Lamp/Existing transition' toggle, I'll set up user testing with Charline to try measure the response to different values, and also the response to 'Magic Lamp' versus 'Existing transition'. This is a great problem to apply user testing to in order to make an objective, as opposed to subjective, decision. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of compiz packagers, which is subscribed to compiz in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1017510 Title: Window management - window animations are too fast for some people to see. [Compiz] [Bug 1017510] Re: Window management - window animations are too fast for some people to see.
John, If a minimize animation is too fast to show you where in the launcher the window has minimized to, then that's a problem for all users, not just beginners. In that case, increasing the speed of animations is a terrible idea. Because even very experienced users need to be able to see _where_ in the launcher the window minimized to. If the animation speeds up to the point where you can't see where it's going then it will be useless to any kind of user. We just need to choose an animation that is either more visible by design, or configured a bit slower. I recommend Magic Lamp which is the default minimize animation in upstream compiz. Its visibility is far superior to zoom. Though it needs improvement to look right with vertical docks like the launcher (bug 989463). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of compiz packagers, which is subscribed to compiz in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1017510 Title: Window management - window animations are too fast for some people to see. [Compiz] [Bug 1017510] Re: Window animations are too fast for some people to see.
@vanvugt; the idea behind the having a slower animation to start with and then increasing in speed during usage is to solve the tradeoff between "slow clear animation allows the user to see exactly what is happening, but makes the computer feel slow and is annoying with repeated usage" and "fast snappy animation makes the interface feel quick and gets out of the way of the user, but is not so descriptive". Once a user has learnt that minimised windows live in the Launcher, the best animation is something super snappy, exactly like we have at the moment. We don't want this to change. However to solve the 'new user using Ubuntu for the first time ever' use case, an initial slower animation that gets slightly quicker everytime a window is minimised should do the trick. Yes this approach has the animation speed change over time without explaining this to the user, but at most the perceived effect will be the computer getting quicker, and in most cases won't be noticed because minimise animations are the type of thing that are not consciously watched after seeing them happen for the first few times. This way we are teaching the user about how Unity behaves, and then getting out of their way with the minimum of fuss. This will also need to be tested, so it would be much appreciated if you could expose 'starting speed', 'speed decline duration in number of minimises' and 'ending speed' variables (as well as a 'reset' option for testing purposes), and then we can experiment with tuning these variables. Thanks, John ** Description changed: In user testing we found that when participants minimise their documents they don't know where they have gone. - Desired solution: - When a new user starts using ubuntu, the window animation should be slowed down. However to prevent the slow animation making Ubuntu feel slow or frustrating over long term usage, the speed of the animation should increase the more it is used, until the speed reaches it's current value. - The speed should increase over the first 100 window minimizations e.g. the very first time a user minimizes a window, the animation is very obvious and slow, and the 100th and subsequent times the user minimises a window the animation has the current fast speed. + + - This will also need to be tested and the values refined, so the + 'starting speed', 'speed decline duration in number of minimises' and + 'ending speed' variables (as well as a 'reset' option for testing + purposes) will need to be exposed in CCSM ** Summary changed: - Window animations are too fast for some people to see. + Window management - window animations are too fast for some people to see. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of compiz packagers, which is subscribed to compiz in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1017510 Title: Window management - window animations are too fast for some people to see.
