[Compiz] [Bug 1044060] Re: compiz uses 100% cpu seemingly at random but maybe related to update-notifier
I was having so much trouble with graphics that the dash was no longer functional. That was why I tried gnome. I was still having graphics problems in gnome-shell, but it was usable except for the 100% cpu problem. Unfortunately, after I did the killall gnome-shell and then restarted gnome-shell, the next time I logged into it, it wouldn't load. I had accidentally killed and restarted gnome-shell while still super- user. I've reported a separate bug about that and hope they will find a way to make gnome-shell work for me again. I had never used it before, but like it alot. Anyway, I tried Super+A which I see is the same as just clicking the dash icon, but graphics went haywire as usual and I couldn't see anything. After rebooting, I logged into gnome classic no effects. I searched for "Additional Drivers" in the Ubuntu Software Center, and to my surprise, it wasn't even installed. After installing "Additional Drivers", it wasn't on the menus, but from Software Center, I knew the command was jockey-kde, and ran it from a terminal window (I use guake). That worked and it detected 3 apparently identical drivers, all named NVIDIA binary Xorg driver, kernel module and VDPAU library. It wouldn't install saying I had held-back broken packages. After an aptitude update & aptitude full-upgrade, I was able to install the driver. This proprietary driver has solved all my problems. Their are clearly very serious issues with the nouveau driver being considered for 12.10, and the latest one for 12.04 has problems too. The original one for 12.04 was fine, but in the past couple of months, I started having serious problems, which was why I decided to try the Alpha 3 12.10. Every upgrade just made the graphics worse. This will be a big problem for Ubuntu. I have not been able to do a proper bug report for nouveau or Xorg or anything related. They can't get the information they need to diagnose the problem. But, the proprietary driver works! The only reason I had stopped using the proprietary driver in 12.04 is that for some reason it made the fonts look horrible, and there were other minor issues as well. Strangely, I could install the proprietary driver, tweak some things like digital vibrance, remove the proprietary driver, and the digital vibrance settings still worked while improving the fonts by using nouveau. Then they upgraded nouveau and it stopped using the settings I had done with the nvidia driver. Then, the graphics went to hell. This latest nvidia driver still has worse fonts than nouveau, but it's better than before, and I have no choice anymore. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of compiz packagers, which is subscribed to compiz in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1044060 Title: compiz uses 100% cpu seemingly at random but maybe related to update- notifier To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/1044060/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~compiz Post to : compiz@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~compiz More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Compiz] [Bug 1044060] Re: compiz uses 100% cpu seemingly at random but maybe related to update-notifier
Colin, As far as I know, gnome-shell is a self-contained window manager now. So that's why it works without mutter. And compiz is not used by Gnome Shell at all (but compiz is used if you log in to "Gnome Classic"). This sounds like an issue with the nouveau driver now. [Compiz] [Bug 1046542] [NEW] removing second monitor leaves windows mapped off-screen
You have been subscribed to a public bug: I'm using a laptop (Lenovo T420, intel graphics) with an external monitor. When I remove the laptop from the dock, Displays correctly shows that I now have just the internal monitor active. However, all existing windows from the external monitor stay mapped to positions off the screen and cannot be activated. [Compiz] [Bug 1046497] [NEW] Unity through llvmpipe is slow
Public bug reported: I have a two years old laptop (AMD, 1core@1.6Ghz) which video card is not supported by any driver (ATI radeon X1200). On Precise, it ran with Unity 2D. It was not really fast, but it was usable. I tested Quantal (latest daily-live) and I found that the desktop was not usable. - the opening/closing animation of a window or menu takes 3 seconds each time - opening the dash takes around 5 seconds - moving windows is horribly jerky - when idle (just with a terminal and a top), compiz eat ~8% of the CPU AFAIK, compiz supports degrading the user experience according to the computer capabilities. So why not applying a custom profile to llvmpipe to disable menu fade in/out, windows animations, blur and/or transparency? Such (supposedly) simple changes could boost FPS quite a bit and lead weak computers to be usable again in this use case. I could not test myself because ccsm is no longer available in Quantal (I don't know how to tweak Compiz/Unity without it). ** Affects: compiz (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of compiz packagers, which is subscribed to compiz in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1046497 Title: Unity through llvmpipe is slow To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/1046497/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~compiz Post to : compiz@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~compiz More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

I'm using Unity 2D (which is not using compiz) (Ubuntu 12.04 Precise) and the same problem happens when I quit LibreOffice while in Full Screen mode and then start it again. Considering the Unity layout, there is not even the title bar (picture: http://www.stockme.fr/img7a9cdcc608/Screenshot_from_20120905_201235.png ) (I modified my theme colors, hence the unusual colors). [Compiz] [Bug 1044060] Re: compiz uses 100% cpu seemingly at random but maybe related to update-notifier
As I was writing the note above, tons of disk activity was going on, and I was expecting update-notifier to pop up. It didn't, so I ran update- notifier and it popped up right away with a list of updates. It could just be coincidence, but maybe the process of checking for and downloading updates might have something to do with this because that seems to be what was happening as I was typing the note above. Of course, that was happening after the spike ended by me killing gnome- shell and re-running it, so I don't know, but that's basically the same pattern I noticed when I first reported this bug. ** Changed in: compiz (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of compiz packagers, which is subscribed to compiz in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1044060 Title: compiz uses 100% cpu seemingly at random but maybe related to update- notifier To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/1044060/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~compiz Post to : compiz@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~compiz More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Compiz] [Bug 1044060] Re: compiz uses 100% cpu seemingly at random but maybe related to update-notifier
The problem has not been solved, but I don't think it's compiz that's causing the trouble. Last night I installed gnome: sudo aptitude install gnome. This morning I was running gnome-shell, not compiz/unity, and got gnome-shell using 100% cpu. I ran dstack.sh 5 times for gnome-shell, and definitely got the spike. Every time the spike seemed to have ended, when I started using Google Chrome Browser again, the spike started again. So, I ran dstack.sh a several more times. Finally, I had to killall gnome-shell and run gnome-shell again. Last night when I was having a different problem with gnome-shell, I tried mutter --replace, but to my surprise, mutter --replace doesn't work with gnome-shell because I didn't have mutter installed! So, does that mean gnome-shell was using compiz? Last night, when I was worried that gnome-shell was running under compiz somehow, I found instructions on the internet to find out what window manager was being used and the result was "Mutter" with a capital "M", but "Mutter --replace" also didn't work since "Mutter" wasn't installed either. So, I installed mutter, but mutter --replace doesn't work because it doesn't load gnome-shell, and same thing happens with compiz --replace. Anyway, whatever gnome-shell is running under, the 100% CPU problem happens with it just as it did with compiz/unity. I'm attaching gnomestack.txt hoping someone will figure out what package really has a bug in it. ** Attachment added: "gnomestack.txt" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/1044060/+attachment/3294182/+files/gnomestack.txt -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of compiz packagers, which is subscribed to compiz in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1044060 Title: compiz uses 100% cpu seemingly at random but maybe related to update- notifier To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/1044060/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~compiz Post to : compiz@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~compiz More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Compiz] [Bug 1036752] Re: [quantal] [regression] Gnome Classic has no compiz plugins loaded
first - this is a couple of day old install But it is the the Aug. 15 image updated so i thought may be worth doing a fresh with the current image. Anyway - Created a new user, logged directly into Classic Same thing, only the ccp plugin is loaded. As far as the override will attach though it seems more suited to an ubuntu session. Is there any expectation of a Default profile being in dconf? Currently only the Unity profile is there. If opening ccsm from the Classic login >Preferences, the Default profile > Plugin List confirms only ccp enabled. If I enable the min set of plugins to get going, then in ccsm >Preferences > Default profile , (only profile avail.), when clicking on the "Reset to defaults" everything but ccp is unset ** Attachment added: "10_compiz-gnome.gschema.override" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-session/+bug/1036752/+attachment/3293905/+files/10_compiz-gnome.gschema.override -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of compiz packagers, which is subscribed to compiz in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1036752 Title: [quantal] [regression] Gnome Classic has no compiz plugins loaded To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/compiz/+bug/1036752/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~compiz Post to : compiz@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~compiz More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Compiz] [Bug 1046190] [NEW] Migration to gsettings doesn't migrate compiz/unity configurable keys to g-c-c and those keys doesn't work
Public bug reported: >From the test case "TESTING THE MIGRATION" from bug #1035261 1. open gnome-control-center, go to the keyboard shorcut panel 2. open, "systems" -> notice that the keys are "disabled" by default, (same in "launchers", "navigation" and other compiz/unity contents) --> on a migrated session, the keys should be migrated and appearing here --> on a guest session, the default keybindings should be shown. Note that this only impact the g-c-c org.compiz.integrated keys. Those are not migrated nor have a default value (even if I disagree and that's an hackish workaround). What needs to be done: 1. migrate the current compiz gconf profile keys to .integrated scheme as well 2. set default values for those so that a guest session shows default values for them. ** Affects: unity-distro-priority Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: compiz (Ubuntu) Importance: High Assignee: Łukasz Zemczak (sil2100) Status: Triaged ** Affects: unity (Ubuntu) Importance: High Assignee: Łukasz Zemczak (sil2100) Status: Triaged ** Tags: gsettings ** Also affects: unity (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Changed in: compiz (Ubuntu) Status: New => Triaged ** Changed in: unity (Ubuntu) Status: New => Triaged ** Changed in: compiz (Ubuntu) Assignee: (unassigned) => Łukasz Zemczak (sil2100) ** Changed in: unity (Ubuntu) Assignee: (unassigned) => Łukasz Zemczak (sil2100) ** Changed in: compiz (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => Critical ** Changed in: compiz (Ubuntu) Importance: Critical => High ** Changed in: unity (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => High ** Tags added: gsettings ** Also affects: unity-distro-priority Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of compiz packagers, which is subscribed to compiz in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1046190 Title: Migration to gsettings doesn't migrate compiz/unity configurable keys to g-c-c and those keys doesn't work To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity-distro-priority/+bug/1046190/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~compiz Post to : compiz@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~compiz More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
