[Compiz] [Bug 1044996] Re: compiz crashed with SIGSEGV in DecorWindow::glDecorate()
Daniel, I too arrived here from the automatic crash handler. I have seen this crash multiple times, but the surest way I've found to trigger it is via the "Open Disc" dialog in VLC. The window opens significantly wider than the screen (the buttons normally found on the right of the window are not visible) and shortly thereafter the UI freezes to such an extent that the mouse will not move and the system will not even switch to a virtual console. [Compiz] [Bug 682788] Re: Improve Unity menus
[x] option to show the damn global menu all the time i believe that was the original complaint here; recently there's been all these other options thrown in like someone *wanted* to muddy the issue. LIM fwiw is a cute variation on the theme of having the menu on the window, but which is just going to introduce more difficult design decisions that kicks everything further down the road (what to do about important window-title text especially if there's a no-autohide option, what to do when the window gets narrower than the menu...) to which the answers are going to be, in short, complex behaviour and clutter. We just wanted the menu to not auto-hide. How can that be taking *years*? Time is not silencing the argument here! And there's little point in repeating this isn't a place to vote when there *isn't* a place to vote. So we'll continue to say it here, so it's recorded, somewhere. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of compiz packagers, which is subscribed to compiz in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/682788 Title: Improve Unity menus To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/682788/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~compiz Post to : compiz@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~compiz More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Compiz] [Bug 1003179] Re: compiz crashes after starting up vnc4server and then unity launcher is not displayed via vnc client
Affecting me too: I am running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Server on a 64bit machine. Unity 3D does not seem to work with VNC, and this may be affecting others too: http://kb.realvnc.com/questions/196/VNC+Server+in+Virtual+Mode+does+not+start+correctly+on+Ubuntu+12.04 My configuration: I installed ubuntu-desktop manually, and launch a single VNC session via xinetd. lightdm is my display manager. service vnc { disable = no socket_type = stream protocol= tcp wait= yes user= chanseok server = /usr/bin/Xvnc4 server_args = -inetd -once -localhost -query localhost -geometry 1280x1024 -depth 16 -PasswordFile /home/chanseok/.vnc/passwd -NeverShared -desktop Ubuntu } No matter which vnc viewer I use (RealVNC or SSL/SSH VNC), the default Unity (i.e., Unity 3D) session just gives a backdrop (as described in the above link too) without a launcher or a top menu bar. This useless state is also quite unstable, and from time to time, various crash notifications follows, and compiz is the frequent one. I found a workaround, though not perfect, by choosing unity-2d from the ligthdm login screen (or, as in the above link, forcing it by giving '-- session=ubuntu-2d'). However, although unity-2d brings up everything and works almost fine, there are several glitches, and this gives me the impression that VNC has certain limitations. This may be the reason that Unity 3D is not working under VNC. The glitches in unity-2d includes: (1) Launching 'System Settings' -> 'Displays' gives an pop up with an error message "Could not get screen information: RANDR extension is too old (must be at least 1.2)") and crashes. 'xrandr -v' in this unity-2d session returns 'xrandr program version 1.3.5', but 'Server reports RandR version 1.1'. (2) I must click and hold down the menus of the top menu bar to make it not disappear immediately. For example, to logout, I should click and hold down the power icon located at the topright corner and move the cursor to 'Log out...' and release it. There are other minor glitches too, but the above are the most annoying ones. I hope anyone finds this helpful. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of compiz packagers, which is subscribed to compiz in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1003179 Title: compiz crashes after starting up vnc4server and then unity launcher is not displayed via vnc client To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/1003179/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~compiz Post to : compiz@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~compiz More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Compiz] [Bug 682788] Re: Improve Unity menus
@Rachel Greenham: I couldn't agree more with you. We need to solve one single issue first: show the global menu all the time, then proceed with caution for any other options. Just a few comments/suggestion on the main and secondary issues: - Showing global menu permanently will hide the title of the window. I'd suggest it to be shown whenever the mouse goes to the top of the screen anywhere where there's no menu: for instance, the top-left corner. Throwing the mouse there will do two things: show the title and position the mouse over the close-window button. But throwing the mouse to the top of the screen to the right of the menu (maybe including the indicators area), will reveal the window title. Regarding LIMs: > what to do about important window-title text especially if there's a no-autohide option - A similar aproach to what I suggested above: reveal the window title whenever the mouse is over non-menu areas (and of course by pushing a certain key, such as Shift, Ctrl, Alt, etc.) > what to do when the window gets narrower than the menu... - Whatever has been done for 20+ years with the classic menu bar in the window. This is not a new problem. The problem I can see arising with menus on the title-bar is how to grab the window for moving it around. But AGAIN: the primary concern NOW is having the global menu permanently visible. It's a serious usability issue that needs urgent attention.

[Compiz] [Bug 1051445] [NEW] Sidekick effect's "Zoom from Center" setting is ignored, using Zoom effect's instead
Public bug reported: The "Zoom from Center" setting on the Sidekick effect on Compiz is ignored. Instead, Compiz uses the Zoom effect setting for both effects. What I was expecting: On Compiz -> animations -> effect settings -> Sidekick, the "Zoom from Center" setting changes the behave of the Sideckick effect. What I get: The option on the Sidekick effect is ignored, but, if I change the same setting on Zoom effect, both Sidekick and Zoom are affected by the setting. Steps: Open Compiz-config -> animations -> effect settings On Sidekick -> "Zoom from Center" select "off". On Zoom -> "Zoom from Center" select "on" Trigger a Sidekick: the animation starts from the center; trigger a Zoom. The animation starts from the center. On Zoom -> "Zoom from Center" select "on". Trigger a Sidekick: the animation starts from the mouse position; trigger a Zoom. The animation starts from the mouse position. [Compiz] [Bug 1051492] [NEW] It doesn't seem possible to configure the number of workspaces
Public bug reported: I was trying to update the workspace pages in the Ubuntu Desktop Guide for Quantal: https://help.ubuntu.com/12.04/ubuntu-help/shell-workspaces.html But I can't figure out how to change the number of workspaces.
