It's worth mentioning that exactly the same thing happened on my old
laptop when opening a running Wine program from the dash. It's also
running Quantal but on an Intel 32 bit system.

[Compiz] [Bug 1039045] Re: Wine windows can't go fullscreen

2012-09-17 Thread Daniel van Vugt
There may be a compiz problem somewhere here, which is why it's still
mentioned at the top of the bug.

But that does not change the fact that it is the job of the program
(wine/game) to change the screen resolution, and not the job of the
window manager (compiz). Compiz has no code at all for changing the
screen resolution.

The battery is always in my laptop. I sometimes have the AC power cord
attached and sometimes not, but I haven't been keeping very careful
track of that. I've certainly had the error appear when the AC power
is unplugged, because I've had embarrassing moments showing up to
meetings with a crashed computer (arrggh!).

I'll experiment when I don't have 2 lectures to write for the morning!
Thanks Lawrence.

2012-09-17 Thread Lawrence Patrick Calulo
Matt, was the battery on your ThinkPad not attached when you weren't
able to reproduce the hang?

When I was trying to get the hang to happen on my X200, I got about two
days of hang-free Unity. When I attached the battery and continued
trying, I got two hangs within three hours of each other.

It doesn't make sense to me that the two are related, but it may be
worth a try.

Ctrl-Alt-F1 will take you to a "Virtual Terminal" -- it's a console
screen where you can log in just as you would at the gnome-terminal
prompt. Then you issue those commands, and switch back to the running X
session, which is running on VT7, with Ctrl-Alt-F7. you cna switch
between the 6 built-in VT's with F1-F6; f7 is the default X session; F8
seems to echo system log messages unless you log in a second user, with
'Swtitch User', at which point a new X session will start on that screen.

Does that help?

ps -- My success rate is not that high -- at best I usually end up with
a barely-functional x system, try to save as much work as I can, then
restart X with 'sudo restart lightdm', which destroys my X session but
also resets whatever that display bug is. At worst the resultant
session is just as nonresponsive as the original crashed one.

The Desktop Wall doesn't allow any mouse input...so Im not sure what
this bug is referring to.

Desktop Wall:
Ctrl+Alt+
*Mouse does not work*

Workspace Switcher:
Single mouse clicks focuses the workspace...

Re: [Compiz] [Bug 966744] Re: [i965] Resume from suspend leaves me with black screen or a screen of the desktop before it suspended. Compiz hung in intel_update_renderbuffers() from intel_prepare_rend

2012-09-17 Thread Matt Price
In a previous post i asserted that turning off gnome-screensaver stops
these crashes from happening. This turns out not to be the case.
Unfortunately, I am having trouble capturing an xtrace of the crash --
it almost seems as if xtrace itself somehow protects the driver from the
crash! -- anyway, I'm finding that I can sometimes recover from the
crash by switching to VT1 and running

DISPLAY=:0 unity
DISPLAY=:0  xtrace compiz --replace > ~/trace.txt

But usually I'll end up with some problems, like all window management
being switched off so that it seems as though compiz isn't running at
all. And sometimes this attempt at recovery will fail almost
completely, in that I just end up with an unchanging image of my desktop
wallpaper (sometimes the active windows will flash briefly when I switch
to VT7, then disappear behind the wallpaper. I'm really not sure what
the next steps in diagnosis are, htough I'll keep trying to capture an
xtrace. This is on a Lenovo Thikpad T410, wiht intel graphics & (of
course) the i965 driver.

Thanks all!

[Compiz] [Bug 950160] Re: Unity blocks other programs from binding globally to Super+* or Alt+* (* = any key)

2012-09-17 Thread James M. Leddy
Time for a status update:

We know that there is a workaround that if you start g-s-d after compiz
starts, you _can_ use super+p to switch the monitor. We're not sure if
this is the way it was done in 11.10 and if that's why it works in 11.10
but not in 12.04. However, the easiest fix is probably to make sure that
g-s-d is started after compiz in whatever application starts both.

For the oem-prio task, I am going to leave incomplete until I have an
answer to comment #65 about how bug 7419869 is a duplicate.

Have the issues highlighted by Loris Zinsou been fixed?

I'm also a bit confused on exactly what packages are affected by this
change, the bug seems to affect both unity and compiz but only a unity
branch has been attached.

Besides these two points I'd like to see clarified, the actual change
seems alright and has been approved by the doc team.

[Compiz] [Bug 975372] Re: Compiz uses 40% cpu, causes overheating

2012-09-17 Thread Zookalicious
Hi sorry I haven't used Ubuntu for a few months because of this bug and
others introduced in 12.04. I still have a 12.04 partition at home that
I'll boot into and see if this problem still exists once I have updated
everything.

2012-09-17 Thread Karl Frisk
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 803943 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/803943

Reading the arguments for closing bug bug #803943 I believe this bug
should be unmarked as a duplicate. This bug here is not about decreasing
performance over time but about the general cpu usage of xorg and
compiz.

The problem described in the intitial report still exists in 12.10
Quantal beta 1. Moving around a window makes compiz use 25% and xorg 15%
of cpu (Ivy Bridge i7, Intel Graphics HD 4000).

Daniel,

Thanks. I've removed fglrx driver. You're probably right, CPU consuming
dropped to 0-3%. GUI runs much quicker, though it's still not perfect.
The strange thing is that fglrx driver worked in Ubuntu 11.10 without
such problems.

[Compiz] [Bug 862430] Re: window flicker for a short time after switching workspaces

2012-09-17 Thread Pitermann, Michel
Thank you for your reply. I had already read the whole thread including
comments #111 and #132. I also had already installed your
0.9.7.8-0ubuntu1vvpreproposed2 Compiz version but I suffered too much
from bug #1011923 (white menus). I therefore came back to the last
Compiz version available in precise but I got rid of the Cube and Cube
Rotation plugins to only work with Viewports. This is presently the
less buggy way I have found to work with Compiz. I however did not find
a way to send a window in another viewport just using keyboard
shortcuts. It is a bit boring to use the mouse for such a simple task,
but that is not a drama.

I had worked with Compiz for several years (Berryl, Compiz, and Compiz
Fusion) but I stopped using it about one year ago because it had become
too bugged for my taste. I tried several desktops for months but none
gave me all the features that I was looking for. I guess I had been too
spoiled with Compiz :-) I tried Compiz again this summer but I was very
disappointed. Your answer and what I saw during the last couple of
Months give me hope back.

I am happily surprised that there are only 3 regression bugs left for
the correction of the bug described in this thread. If I remember well,
there were a dozen of them in August. I must say that I am amazed by
the Compiz team and by yourself for the number of bugs that had been
corrected during the last couple of months for Compiz 0.9.8, period over
which I have followed this thread. I am very impatient to try it. You
all deserve the congratulations several people have expressed here.

[Compiz] [Bug 1051831] Re: Low GUI performance, high CPU consuming

2012-09-17 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Anton,

I see you are using the fglrx driver. Does your video card support the
radeon driver?

If you're not sure, then please try:
  1. Run: jockey-gtk
  2. Remove the ATI/AMD driver(s)
  3. Reboot

Then if you find that's no better, do this:
  1. Run: jockey-gtk
  2. Re-install the ATI/AMD driver.
