It is the scale plugin, but I don't think that's the right bug. I don't recall seeing anyone else report freezes with scale. Not sure if this information is useful, but I used to encounter this bug at least per day with Ubuntu 12.04 on a Lenovo Thinkpad x200. Matt Price (matt-price) asked about the underlying cause of the hang, and I think it is most clearly stated in the link to freedesktop-bugs #50227 at the top of this page in the status table, which finally has this bug marked as critical by almost every subsystem. That is a fairly complicated question to answer but I doubt you will have a problem with wireless with 3.6 simply because the realtek drivers are usually updated with every kernel release so if you card use to work ok, in 3.2, it should work much better in 3.6. Testing it should be really easy. Just download the package , I have the address a couple of comments above, and install them, using dpkg -i, and boot. when I disable "framebuffer object" and "always use buffer swapping" in
the settings of compiz, the performance of unity is EXCELLENT!, test
glxgears I get 1700 fps, but when I enable these options unity is

Sometimes upon resume, all I see is a black screen and the cursor. the mouse and keyboard respond (the mouse moves) but nothing changes. Switching to console and back doesn't fix it. Killing Compiz also does not fix the issue. Further, if one has password lock disabled on resume the user will be stuck with a frozen display of whatever was last shown on the screen before suspend. The mouse cursor still changes as you hover over various elements but the display is frozen solid. One can switch to another TTY via ctrl+alt+F1 but killing the X session is the only way to get back to the desktop. Attempts to replace compiz have been fruitless. Trying the 3.4 kernel also did not fix the issue. BTW, I haven nothing connected to the laptop when I resume and before suspend. This is a very annoying issue because the only way to recover is to reboot, which means all the open files will be lost. [UPDATE] It was discovered that switching to a tty, killing compiz, then invoking 'metacity --replace' would successfully switch over to metacity. Attempting to invoke 'compiz --replace' afterwards would put the state right back where it was (frozen screen, etc.) and output error messages saying something similar to "invalid configuration, this should never happen, you should probably raise a bug report about it". After killing Compiz again and invoking compiz --replace yet again I can get basic window management back (though unity --replace still does not work as it whines about unclean exit states). So one still needs to start over again to get it all functioning properly. Hi David: Here's a fix. In a terminal, type: sudo gedit /usr/bin/scratch You'll see a line that starts with VMOPTIONS. Remove the -xshm from that line, so it looks like this: VMOPTIONS="-encoding UTF-8 -vm-display-x11 -plugins /usr/lib/scratch/plugins/:$SQ_DIR/" Save the file. Yes - of curse. I think wine tries to go fullscreen and then it´s pushed back by some component of unity/compiz. I normally run wine programs from terminal and i dont´t see anything unusual in terminal log (aka log from xfce is same as in unity). I am now planning to test play on linux(more versions of wine) on open source radeon driver, i´ll report back when i´ll finish. @James, Bug 950160 and bug 741869 are different. Bug 950160 has affected 3 projects now. It is quite confusing to follow since many bugs in different components are involved. Keng-Yu's g-s-d patch only fixes the issue in Unity 2D and Gnome shell. It has nothing to do with Unity 3D. Unity3D/Compiz has a design issue which also contributes to this bug. They should not prevent g-s-d from receiving the Super key event. Please note that workaround #2 as mentioned in the description of this bug does not work reliable on many machines. bug 741869 targets Compiz. It is the main cause why Super+p does not work in Unity 3D. I switched to 3.6-rc5 from the kernel PPA (http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/) and so far, I haven't had any blank screens upon resume. Please have a try. BTW, although the kernel says quantal, you can install it on 12.04. You need 4 packages / per architecture. Set to Medium in compiz-core (precise) and Critical in compiz (quantal). That's because almost no one will ever see this bug in precise.
