Tested with Precise on ARM (Pandaboard) and the fix didn't bring any
other side effect or regression, besides fixing the proposed bug. Was
able to use Firefox at full screen without any issue with Unity.

[Compiz] [Bug 860375] Re: Screen edge actions set in CCSM don't work (sometimes)

2012-09-25 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I think I've found a test case that breaks my corner binding:

1. Load the grid and expo plugins.
2. Test that dragging windows to the top-left corner triggers grid.
3. Enter expo mode (top-left corner or Super+E)
4. Try to drag one of the windows to the top left corner of the screen. It
won't get that far, but make sure the mouse gets to the corner.
5. Exit expo mode (Escape or Super+E)
6. Try dragging a window to the top left-corner again.

Expected: Grid to trigger.
Observed: Nothing.

[Compiz] [Bug 1056279] Re: Please disable the snap plugin

2012-09-25 Thread Tim Cook
Hello Everyone. Thanks for thinking about this snapping problem. I'm
afraid Omer is mistaken about the "GRID" option in CompizConfig. It has
never been enabled on my machine--yet, the problem persists. In
addition, the "SNAPPING WINDOWS" option has never been enabled in my
CompizConfig settings either. Like other users, I've found that the
only way to stop the automatic snapping is to disable "PLACE WINDOWS" in
CompizConfig. Doing that, though, creates another very undesirable
behavior where any new window that's turned on shoots to the upper left
screen and is placed so high that it's Title/Control Bar is not visible.
Hardly a good situation.

This snapping mess was discussed as early as September 2010 in this
thread:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1582142&highlight=window+snap

Let me say this: I really don't care if 12.04 is fixed. I really don't.
What I do care about is that a problem that's been identified for many
months is fixed and put to bed before October 18 and Quantal Quetzal.
Can someone tell me if Quetzal is free of this problem? :-) I hope the
answer is yes.

Disabling it will generally reduce graphics performance (assuming it's

an issue.

[Compiz] [Bug 1056279] Re: Please disable the snap plugin

2012-09-25 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I agree, the snap plugin causes more problems than it solves.

You can disable it by installing "compizconfig-settings-manager". Then
run "ccsm" and go to "Window Management" where you should untick
"Snapping Windows".

The half-off-screen issue is bug 974242, I think.

[Compiz] [Bug 1056327] [NEW] Switching the workspace don't works with two windows of the same type

2012-09-25 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Steps to reproduce:

Open an application. (For example an Terminal)
Open a new window of the same type. (Right click on the icon of the opened
program – Terminal – and then "New Terminal")
Hide one of the open windows.
Choose one of the two windows and select "Move to workspace 2". (Or 3,…)
Then try to show one of the windows, usually by clicking on the icon in the
dash.

Result:

Quickly you'll see that nothing will happen.

Expected result:

There are some ways to deal with that problem: You can directly show the
windows which was used at last.
Or you can ask the user which one he would see in the fourground, by showing
both windows at the same time, so the user has the choice between the both.

All,

Compiz 0.9.8.0 - 0.9.8.2 in Ubuntu 12.10 contains a regression of nvidia
bug 92599 which will cause slow/stuttering screen redraws. Please look
at bug 92599 for a workaround.

this bug reporting an issue with dialogs appearing on the wrong

[Compiz] [Bug 1042211] Re: [quantal] [regression] [i915] Corrupted display, desktop and menus don't repaint correctly using Mesa 9.0 (8.0.4 works)

2012-09-25 Thread Stefan Freyr
A bit more information which I again don't know if is helpful.

The desktop effects seem to be generally "slow". For example, maximizing
and minimizing windows is very jerky.

However, if I switch from using OpenGL as the "compositing type" in
"System Settings" -> "Desktop Effects" -> "Advanced" tab and use XRender
instead the effects become much smoother (although a few effects are
disabled because they require OpenGL).

Switching to XRender also _seems_ to have gotten rid of the artifacts
although I don't have a good way of reliably reproducing them so I can't
say for sure.

[Compiz] [Bug 1056279] [NEW] Window snapping disable

2012-09-25 Thread Tim Cook
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu 12.04, I'm tired of application windows that automatically move and
snap to screen edge as you use them. They snap as soon as you place your
cursor on any other object in the workspace. Very annoying. Others have
complained about this behavior but I never discovered any user solutions using
the Ubuntu forums. No amount of tinkering in CompizConfig Settings Manager
seems to help. I also want the ability to move a window halfway off the screen
to temporarily get it out of my way (while working in GIMP). Automatic
snapping makes this impossible. Any application window that is manually moved
halfway off the screen will immediately jump back in as you touch your cursor
to any other workspace object. Question: Has this auto-snapping problem been
addressed and fixed for the upcoming Quantal Quetzal release? (I use the
Classic interface.)
One note: Window snapping of this sort has never occurred in Windows 7 and I'm
distressed that, in this respect, the Canonical product is inferior to
Microsoft. Also, if I remember correctly, automatic window snapping did NOT
occur in Ubuntu versions prior to 12.04. That suggests to me that in 12.04 the
snapping behavior is a true bug that cannot be disabled by any changes to
configuration settings.

[Compiz] [Bug 950160] Re: Unity blocks other programs from binding globally to Super+* or Alt+* (* = any key)

2012-09-25 Thread James M. Leddy
Hi Omar,

Yes, the issue is still happening. I don't know the specifics of
XkbStateNotify events, but it seems that whatever registers the key the
latest gets priority. Thus, if g-s-d starts after compiz, it will get
Super+p events, even though Unity (compiz) still gets the Super key when
pressed in isolation. The fix to g-s-d didn't fix the underlying problem
of Unity swallowing Super+p, just that if g-s-d gets the event it'll do
the proper thing. Let me know if you have any more questions.

[Compiz] [Bug 1029085] Re: Stuttering in games with high fps and Nvidia

2012-09-25 Thread James Christie
I gave 12.10 with the latest compiz available from the updater a try,
though I do not know the exact version number. Everything on the system
ran very slowly even after installing any version of the nvidia driver
package (current/current-updates/current-experimental). I know it's an
early beta, but it only performed worse across the board. I'll try again
as the beta gets further along in the dev cycle.

[Compiz] [Bug 734908] Re: Unity is visible on top of fullscreen apps

2012-09-25 Thread quequotion
Unfortunately unity 5.16.0 does not fix this bug (completely).

There is still an edge case: bug 1025535

Steps to reproduce:

1. In CCSM, enable Desktop Cube
2. In Desktop Cube's settings, in the Transparent Cube tab, set "Opacity When
Not Rotating" to any value less than 100.
3. Open an application capable of fullscreen (firefox, totem, etc)
4. Enter fullscreen (usually [F11] or [Alt]+[Enter])
5. Observe that unity obstructs the fullscreen window.

[Compiz] [Bug 950160] Re: Unity blocks other programs from binding globally to Super+* or Alt+* (* = any key)

2012-09-25 Thread Hao-Ran Liu
Thank you, James!

I tested your workaround on some machines from different vendors, which
used to have this super+p issue. I confirm that it can fix the problem.

The comment above is contrary to Daniel's comment in #55. James may be
right that whichever starts later gets to grab the event.

I am not sure if there is any side effect to start gnome-settings-daemon
in the "Application" phase, which seems to be a bit late. Since we only
want to start g-s-d after compiz, which is started in "WindowManager"
phase. timchen119 suggested to start it in the "Panel" phase, which is
the next phase after "WindowManager" phase. So I also tested machines
with that line changed to:

X-GNOME-Autostart-Phase=Panel

So far everything works fine.
