2012-10-03 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Brandon,

Please don't unlink branches, even if they're superseded. The links
provide a permanent paper trail for people trying to understand the
history of a bug and its fixes. Particularly important for people who
are trying to backport fixes later.

[Compiz] [Bug 1061116] Re: compiz crashes after start up

2012-10-03 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a ".crash" file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

Now open your file manager, navigate to your /var/crash directory and open the
crash report you wish to submit.
If this fails you will have to open a terminal and file your report with
'ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash' where _my_crash_report.crash is
the crash you would like to report. If you get an error that you aren't allowed
to access this report you will have to file it with 'sudo ubuntu-bug
/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash'.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

A stack trace would not help in the free() because it's a delayed effect
from earlier heap corruption.

All - Please try this to produce a better crash report that will help us
find the root cause of the problem:

env MALLOC_CHECK_=3 G_SLICE=always-malloc unity --replace

Slightly frustrated there is no stacktrace, I get this every time
logging in.

Interestingly though, if I switch to a vt and start unity manually, all
is fine.

[Compiz] [Bug 1059218] Re: Crash when enabling KDE compatibility in ccsm

2012-10-03 Thread Edward Donovan
Ok, from learning some more, I think we're experiencing bug 1054074.
And it's marked Fix Committed, so that's good.

That report mentions crashing on selecting a different plugin, and one
of the dupes, bug 1054775, mentions another, so I thinkn it's the same
situation. I'll wait for a little more info beforfe marking our bugs as
dupes. Thanks.

[Compiz] [Bug 1059218] Re: Crash when enabling KDE compatibility in ccsm

2012-10-03 Thread Edward Donovan
Ok, I've submitted another crash report as bug 1061221. Compiz didn't
crash on selecting 'KDE Compat' that time, but restarted sucessfully.
But then I unchecked the option, and it crashed. Don't know if the
trace from that will come out much different. I'll see what launchpad
makes of this one.

[Compiz] [Bug 1059347] Re: compiz crashed with SIGSEGV after selecting 'KDE compaitibility' in CCSM, while running Unity

2012-10-03 Thread Edward Donovan
I don't know, Marius, it just came up for me, as usual. Compiz was
gone, and I did have to click 'Relaunch' on the apport window, to get a
window manager again. But it sounds like you didn't even get to that
point. I guess you could check whether you have a

  ~/.apport-ignore

file, just in case.

I haven't had an opportunity yet where I'm free to crash my desktop
session, again. But hopefully soon.

[Compiz] [Bug 750386] Re: compiz crashed with SIGABRT in raise() from abort() from __libc_message() from malloc_printerr() from _int_free()

2012-10-03 Thread Joey Stanford
Apparently this is still happening to many people (including myself) and
I'm getting pings and emails about the work-around that I've discovered.
This is the script that I use. Don't trust me... research this
yourself.

1) I login at lightdm and verify that launching anything from Unity causes a
hang/crash/freeze.
2) I control-alt 1 to a console terminal and login
3) I run this script (replace "" with your login name. I've called it
"fixcompiz.sh"

#!/bin/sh
sudo service lightdm stop
rm -rf /home/me/.compiz*
rm -rf /home/me/.cache/.compiz*
sudo service lightdm start

4) when lightdm starts it forces me over to console 7 where I can just
login and continue on my happy way with a working system.

I have to perform the above 4 steps on my two nvidia machines on every
boot.

2012-10-03 Thread Sam Spilsbury
Hmm, nope. I've removed UnityMTGrabHandles::glDraw from the description
as we're just painting a regular old tfp texture from xcomposite. This
sounds like some kind of weird problem in the driver.

Can the reporters run nvidia-bug-report.sh ? It should be in your PATH
by default.

I think we could be providing an invalid image to the driver. Not sure.

The fixes landing soon on trunk should not be backported to quantal
