[Compiz] [Bug 934069] Re: compiz crashed with SIGSEGV in _wordcopy_fwd_aligned() from __memmove_sse2() from drisw_update_tex_buffer() from dri_set_tex_buffer2() from

2012-06-12 Thread Bryce Harrington
I see that the new mesa 8.0.3 bugfix release includes a couple fixes to
the drisw code. I wonder if this is the bug you're seeing.

Dave Airlie:
glx/drisw: avoid segfaults when we fail to get visual
drisw: fix image stride calculation for 16-bit.

I've posted mesa 8.0.3 to this PPA. Please install it, reboot, and re-
test and see if you can still reproduce the crash. If you're able to
test it long enough to convince yourself that the crash is gone, please
reply here indicating so. We may be able to roll out this fix for
precise-proposed as an SRU.

[Compiz] [Bug 877438] Re: [8xxx] Unity/compiz has sluggish performance on dual-head with nvidia driver

2012-04-04 Thread Bryce Harrington
Well, here's the problem, you have ancient nvidia bits installed. 285
is incompatible with the Ubuntu Precise xserver.

DkmsStatus:
 nvidia-current, 285.05.09, 3.0.0-12-generic, x86_64: installedError! Could not
locate dkms.conf file.
 File: does not exist.

 nvidia-current-updates, 280.13, 3.0.0-12-generic, x86_64: installed

I'm not sure why that didn't upgrade on its own, but the way to work
around this problem is to uninstall and apt-get purge nvidia*, and then
reinstall nvidia using jockey.

[Compiz] [Bug 877438] Re: [8xxx] Unity/compiz has sluggish performance on dual-head with nvidia driver

2012-04-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
I notice several bugs reporting similar problems with older nvidia
cards: 877438 (8xxx cards), 940742 (6xxx cards), 943643 (9800), 958251
(8600), 962191 (7100). The problems include generally degraded
performance, fuzzy fonts, and/or lagging in games, which did not exist
in earlier versions of the nvidia driver.

We've recently added a new 295-33 version of -nvidia to Ubuntu. The
changelog doesn't specifically list a fix for this type of problem, but
it does list a few performance fixes, and would be worth re-testing.
Update to nvidia 295.33 and report back here whether or not it improved
the performance.

Note, you might be seeing crashes, corruption, or other assorted
problems, but these may be separate bugs, let's just focus on the
performance regression on this bug report.

[Compiz] [Bug 935630] Re: White rectangular

2012-03-13 Thread Bryce Harrington
Alright, thanks for all the feedback. Given that the boxes go away when
logged out, and that Denver is on -radeon whereas Andreas is -intel, it
is likely sounding not to be a driver issue. It is probably compiz
doing something wrong.

I see there are similar bugs against compiz, #940603 and #753606, but
the symptoms differ, so not setting as dupe. (940603 is also against
chromium, so may be pertinent)

We're up to 290.20 in Precise, which should resolve this bug.

[Compiz] [Bug 929655] Re: Unity randomly freezes after 11.10 upgrade

2012-02-09 Thread Bryce Harrington
jpds posted me the pertinent bits from the .xsession-errors:

** (gnome-fallback-mount-helper:1522): DEBUG: ConsoleKit session is active 0
gnome-session[1430]: WARNING: Application 'compiz.desktop' killed by signal
gnome-session[1430]: WARNING: App 'compiz.desktop' respawning too quickly
gnome-session[1430]: CRITICAL: We failed, but the fail whale is dead. Sorry

So, compiz is definitely getting stuck in a loop. gnome-session notices
it's failing and (I guess) restarts the session.

I'd follow the usual compiz troubleshooting steps from here. Enable
debugging; test a guest session; run compiz through gdb; disable compiz
plugins one by one, etc.

+ Make sure "Sync To VBlank" is enabled in the OpenGL section of CompizConfig
Settings Manager. In Ubuntu 11.04 it is enabled by default.

fglrx: Drag some windows around. Also open and close windows. The
animations will not be smooth as they appear to stutter. The framerate
  is only around 20-30Hz.

intel and possibly any driver: Press WinKey+S or WinKey+W rapidly to
trigger the expo/workspace animations. These are full-screen animations.
  But are they silky-smooth?

Now turn "Sync To VBlank" off and repeat the above steps again. If you
notice the animations are much smoother than with "Sync To VBlank" on
then you are suffering from this bug.

[Compiz] [Bug 847666] Re: Mouse pointer placement issues with screens of differient resolutions.

Technically, this concept could be implemented either in X itself (if
upstream is open to it), or in compiz.

However whether or not to do it (in Unity) is a design decision, and
needs to be addressed first.

[Compiz] [Bug 749664] Re: Applications appear off-screen in multi-monitor setups where the resolution of the secondary display is greater than that of the primary display

2011-12-20 Thread Bryce Harrington
This looks to be another dead space bug which was fixed with the mouse
barrier work in X.org.

Indeed, after arranging monitors to replicate the reporter's
configuration, I am not able to reproduce the issue on Precise. I'm
marking this as fix released. I do not think barriers is a candidate
for sru, so not nominating backport tasks.

If you'd like to verify the fix is in precise but don't want to install
precise, it should be sufficient to boot a Live USB session, configure
the monitors, and see if it is working properly now.You can get the
current Live USB desktop image at http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-
live/current/ and create a USB boot drive using usb-creator.

[Compiz] [Bug 877438] Re: Unity/compiz has sluggish performance on dual-head with nvidia driver

2011-12-15 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

+ When Unity/Compiz is running with the -nvidia driver and two monitors
+ are connected, compiz and/or Xorg will consume CPU time (50-90% typ.)
+ with window activity (opening large numbers of windows, resizing,
+ moving, etc.)
+
+ Disabling "Sync to VBlank" appears not to help.
+
+ Duplicate bug #737454 suggests it may be an issue specific to the NVIDIA
+ 8xxx series cards with large resolution sizes.
+
+ [Workarounds]
+ The issue can be reliably worked around by either disabling one of the
displays, or disabling the Unity Plugin in CompizConfig Settings Manager
+
+ The nouveau driver on the same hardware typically does not have the
+ performance issue (but may have other issues such as stability,
+ rendering it not a valid workaround).
+
+ Some have reported that upgrading to -nvidia 290.03 solves the problem;
+ others report it has no effect. See
+ http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=2493300
+
+ Some have reported that lowering the external monitor resolution to
+ match the laptop LVDS resolution brings performance to acceptable
+ levels.

[Compiz] [Bug 737454] Re: xorg high cpu usage with compiz while using top command; goes away when compiz is killed

2011-12-15 Thread Bryce Harrington
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 877438 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/877438

Attempted to reproduce it on Precise using an Intel gfx laptop docked
with external monitor. Initially on open a dozen windows the CPU got
slightly higher but still hardly got near 0.10, then dropped back down
to 0.01.

So, this is likely nvidia-specific, and I'll bet this is the same as bug
#877438. I'll set as a dupe.

Ok, the crash itself was a dupe of bug 838128.

I've pinged Martin about the processing issues in case he's interested
in investigating, but otherwise this can just be duped.

[Compiz] [Bug 879971] Re: Can't highlight bottom row of workspaces with mouse (Unity workspace switcher)

2011-12-15 Thread Bryce Harrington
I'm not able to reproduce this behavior on Precise with Ubuntu on an
Intel gfx laptop in a docking station. I tried both with a single
monitor and with an external monitor. Single-clicking to select the
workspace always worked, and doubleclicking seemed to work as well.

I did notice some wonky screen painting problem but that's a separate
bug, which I'll file subsequently.

Would you mind testing to see if the problem also is resolved in your
case in Precise? If you don't want to install Ubuntu Precise, it should
be sufficient to boot a Live USB session, configure the monitors, and
see if it is working properly now.You can get the current Live USB
desktop image at http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ and
create a USB boot drive using usb-creator.

[Compiz] [Bug 904940] Re: compiz crashed with SIGABRT while changing external monitor configuration

2011-12-15 Thread Bryce Harrington
Interesting!

So, the processing of this bug report highlights several flaws in the
processors:

First, version 1:0.9.6-0ubuntu4.1 of compiz-plugins-main-default is not
included in Precise (indeed, the SRU for including it in oneiric is
blocked *because* the fix isn't in precise yet.) So the tracer should
not have rejected the report based on this.

Second, version 1:0.9.6-0ubuntu4.1 of compiz-plugins-main-default
includes two bug fixes neither of which have to do with crashes, so this
crash report is still valid.

Third, for whatever reason, apport was unable to produce a valid trace.
Perhaps this is due to something related to the first issue.

Fourth, the core file has been deleted, even though I set the bug report
to public when I filed it (the machine is a test box with no private
data). If apport is unable to create a trace from a core dump on a
public bug, it should not delete the core dump; again that just hides
information which could be useful in tracking down the problem.

[Compiz] [Bug 877438] Re: Unity compiz plugin makes display slow on multi-screen

2011-11-25 Thread Bryce Harrington
This seems likely to be either a nvidia driver bug or compiz (and
definitely not mesa -- bad bugbot).

I've flagged it for attention with the multi-monitor support
specification (https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/desktop-p
-multi-monitor).

For now I'll add tasks for both compiz and nvidia, until the issue is
better pinpointed.

2011-11-08 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hey legluondunet,

You filed this bug report against natty, but I see it's still open and
doesn't appear to have much activity recently. So, now that oneiric
is released and stable, this may be a good point for you to upgrade
and re-test if this issue is still present there.

If it's solved in the new release and you think it's worth backporting
the fix, please indicate that. Or if having the fix in the new release
is good enough, feel free to close out the bug (or let us know and we'll
close it.)

If it's not solved, leave the bug report open. I can't promise we'll
get to it (we get way more bugs filed than we can usually get to), but
your testing and feedback can help out if and when we do.

Hey lcpak,

Hi, thanks for reporting this issue during the development period of
Ubuntu.

I notice there's not been further comments to the bug report since the
release came out, would you mind updating us on the status of it in the

Are you still able to reproduce the issue? If not, do you think the bug
report can be closed, or do you think we should continue tracking it?

Rory, logs and backtrace or it didn't happen.

(This looks much like an NVIDIA-specific bug so far. If -fglrx has a
similar crash, it could be coincidental, but should be investigated in
its own right regardless, so please file a separate bug report.)

It looks to me like an incorrect pointer is being passed from NVIDIA's
GL blob into XFindOnExtensionList(), so I concur with Sam's analysis
that it's a driver bug, probably specific to -nvidia. This should be
escalated to NVIDIA.

determine more certainly that the compiz upgrades caused the regression.

It seems the unity apport hook no longer properly provides the necessary
X logs when filing bugs. Please execute the following command in a
terminal after reproducing the issue, and it it will automatically
gather debugging information needed for this bug:

[Compiz] [Bug 769650] Re: dual monitor runs unusably slow (Asus 1000HE, Intel 945GME)

2011-04-26 Thread Bryce Harrington
You've exceeded your hardware's maximum texture size (2048 x 2048). See
LP: #555641 which this is basically a dupe of. Sounds like X switched
to software rendering rather than crashing or something equally
antisocial, so that's good.

The real bug here is that gnome-display-properties apparently doesn't
doublecheck the max texture size when compiz is active. It needs to
tell the user the consequences of setting the root framebuffer size to
be bigger than the max texture size when they try to apply it.

[Compiz] [Bug 555641] Re: MASTER: max texture size prevents compiz from running

2011-04-26 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

  [Problem]
Running compiz with dual-head enabled on certain graphics cards does not
work. Compiz either errors out and refuses to run, or else fails with a black
screen.

Compiz displays the desktop as a 3D texture. The maximum texture size
is determined by the hardware capabilities of the particular graphics
card. Some older or lower end cards have a limitation of 2048x2048,
which means if you set up a side-by-side arrangement, the sum of the
  horizontal resolutions could exceed 2048.

  Some example max texture limits:

  Radeon Xpress 200M: 2048x2048
  Radeon X1600/X1900: 4096 x 4096
  Radeon HD 2400: 8192 x 8192
  Radeon HD 2600/4670/4850/4870: 8192 x 8192
  GeForce 7300/7600: 4096 x 4096
  Quadro FX 4500: 4096 x 4096
  GeForce 8600/880/9400/9600/120/130/285: 8192 x 8192
  Quadro FX 4800: 8192 x 8192
+ i945: 2048 x 2048
  GMA 950: 2048 x 2048
  GMA X3100: 2048 x 2048

  [Workarounds]
  A. If monitors are rectangular, arrange them above/below instead of
left/right

  B. Turn off compiz

  [Original Report]
  I'm using a Lenovo S10-2 netbook (Intel GMA950 chipset, 1024x600 internal
resolution). When I connect a VGA display (Samsung SyncMaster 757NF) and set it
to span, both screens go black with only the mouse cursor visible.

The secondary display works fine if I set it to 832x624 or lower (but
this is not really an acceptable option with the size of the display,
  etc)

Using Ubuntu lucid with all updates. This bug was present in karmic as
  well.

[Compiz] [Bug 762264] Re: Dual-head initial render of left screen is wrong after login

2011-04-15 Thread Bryce Harrington
One click on the titlebar of a window on the left screen is sufficient
to restore the rendering.

I gather the click triggers a redraw event.

I can try booting a few different ways to isolate it if you'd like. But
I'm guessing this may already be a known issue, so will wait until
someone has verified if this is just a dupe to do more testing.

[Compiz] [Bug 762264] [NEW] Dual-head initial render of left screen is wrong after login

2011-04-15 Thread Bryce Harrington
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

I have a dual-head desktop system with radeon RV770. I use a
~/.xprofile script to launch firefox and some pre-positioned xterms on
the two screens.

In metacity, they come up and are displayed correctly.

Under unity/compiz, the right screen renders correctly but the left one
shows part of the screen sort of stretched out horizontally (see photo
1).

When I simply click the mouse on the firefox window, suddenly the screen
redraws itself correctly (see photo 2).

This is not a recent regression - I've seen it each time I boot into
unity during natty development. In maverick, compiz worked correctly
but I didn't try unity on that release.

[Compiz] [Bug 745839] Re: compiz crashed with SIGSEGV in pthread_mutex_lock()

2011-04-14 Thread Bryce Harrington
On the X/mesa side of things, this is really a dupe of bug 555641, which
is basically a wishlist for upstream's Shatter functionality (which
allows building a screen up from multiple texture buffers, each of which
would fit within the gpu's texture limits).

However, that functionality is a _long_ way off. In the mean time, I
think compiz needs to include a check for the maximum texture size
compared with the resolution during boot. This may be a compiz
regression, since it used to do this in the past, c.f.:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=4166024
"""
I am running an integrated ATi XPRESS 200 Series video card.
Here is my COMPIZ :
Checking for Xgl: not present.
...
Checking for Composite extension: present.
Comparing resolution (1440x900) to maximum 3D texture size (2048) Passed.
...
"""

So I will leave the compiz task open here. Possibly it's a dupe of
other bugs, this is not an uncommon problem. I'm going to close out the
mesa task as Won't Fix, since it's definitely a _valid_ issue, but not
something we can really fix on the X side easily, rather than marking
this as a dupe, since some work does need done on the compiz side here.

(Btw, there may also need to be similar checks in gnome-settings-daemon
if it is used to change monitor layouts while compiz is running, however
that's a separate problem...)

[Compiz] [Bug 555641] Re: MASTER: max texture size prevents compiz from running

2011-04-14 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

  [Problem]
Running compiz with dual-head enabled on certain graphics cards does not
work. Compiz either errors out and refuses to run, or else fails with a black
screen.

Compiz displays the desktop as a 3D texture. The maximum texture size
is determined by the hardware capabilities of the particular graphics
card. Some older or lower end cards have a limitation of 2048x2048,
which means if you set up a side-by-side arrangement, the sum of the
  horizontal resolutions could exceed 2048.

  Some example max texture limits:

+ Radeon Xpress 200M: 2048x2048
  Radeon X1600/X1900: 4096 x 4096
  Radeon HD 2400: 8192 x 8192
  Radeon HD 2600/4670/4850/4870: 8192 x 8192
  GeForce 7300/7600: 4096 x 4096
  Quadro FX 4500: 4096 x 4096
  GeForce 8600/880/9400/9600/120/130/285: 8192 x 8192
  Quadro FX 4800: 8192 x 8192

This bug was present in karmic as
  well.

[Compiz] [Bug 745839] Re: compiz crashed with SIGSEGV in pthread_mutex_lock()

2011-04-14 Thread Bryce Harrington
No, not really a driver issue. Rather, you're pushing the hardware
beyond its capabilities.

The X300 radeon card in the Xpress 200M is capable only of a maximum
2048x2048 combined screen dimension when running compiz. See bug
#555641.

Arrange your screens top/bottom instead of left/right and you should be
fine (it'll fit inside the 2048x2048 limit.) Also, remove the virtual
resolution specification in your xorg.conf - shouldn't be needed
anymore.

[Compiz] [Bug 760322] Re: Video freezes when playing fullscreen OpenGL games on HP ProBook 4520s

2011-04-14 Thread Bryce Harrington
Fullscreen games often invoke a modeset operation when they go full
screen, which I'm gathering must trigger some buggy bit of compiz'
xrandr wrapping logic. Especially since using metacity works around the
problem, it sounds compiz-specific. Refiling.

As per https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-x/2011-March/001065.html
you should be able to now manually install -fglrx and then install a PPA

Can someone do this install and confirm whether or not this bug still
exists with that?

[Compiz] [Bug 730038] Re: Attaching external screen to my notebook will cause xserver to corrupt

2011-03-21 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hmm, not sure I completely understand your previous message but I get
the impression from it that the external screen works right with classic
desktop (no effects), so it sounds like this is a dupe of the bugs
relating to compiz' handling of multi-monitor configurations. I'll bump
it over there.

If you can reproduce multihead problems when using just metacity, then
that may suggest an actual X issue in which case you can set it back to
X.

[Compiz] [Bug 737454] Re: xorg high cpu usage with compiz while using top command; goes away when compiz is killed

2011-03-18 Thread Bryce Harrington
High X CPU issues are almost always due to some client application
driving the load up. As long as it doesn't crash X and things keep
working, there isn't anything wrong with X - it's the client app that
needs fixed. ;-)

In this case, since you found cpu usage went down when compiz was turned
off, that indicates something compiz does is causing the excess load.

[Compiz] [Bug 726496] Re: Cannot use Unity or Classic desktop with effects after the latest nvidia+xorg update

2011-03-04 Thread Bryce Harrington
Well, the workaround would be to use -nouveau with the experimental 3d
mesa driver. But YMMV... that is unsupported and is a bit hit-or-miss
for some people.

Another thing to try would be to uninstall and re-install -nvidia, which
should force a rebuild of the kernel driver. Kind of a long-shot
though.

Booting an earlier kernel might be worthwhile just in case it is a
kernel ABI inconsistency. Hold down while booting to see the
menu to select previously installed kernel versions.

As far as debugging, you could peruse these general upstream links:
  http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=58498
  ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/270.30/README/knownissues.html

I briefly scanned through them myself but didn't spot anything obviously
applicable here. Perhaps something relevant would catch your eye
though.

Another place to check is the upstream forums:
  http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=14

There are a couple reports of black screen / freezing bugs, but the symptoms
sound slightly different than yours:
  http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=159440
