I see that the new mesa 8.0.3 bugfix release includes a couple fixes to the drisw code. I wonder if this is the bug you're seeing. Dave Airlie: glx/drisw: avoid segfaults when we fail to get visual drisw: fix image stride calculation for 16-bit. I've posted mesa 8.0.3 to this PPA. Please install it, reboot, and re- test and see if you can still reproduce the crash. If you're able to test it long enough to convince yourself that the crash is gone, please reply here indicating so. We may be able to roll out this fix for precise-proposed as an SRU. https://launchpad.net/~bryce/+archive/mesa-803 ** Changed in: mesa (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of compiz packagers, which is subscribed to compiz in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/934069 Title: compiz crashed with SIGSEGV in _wordcopy_fwd_aligned() from __memmove_sse2() from drisw_update_tex_buffer() from dri_set_tex_buffer2() from To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/compiz/+bug/934069/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~compiz Post to : compiz@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~compiz More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Compiz] [Bug 877438] Re: [8xxx] Unity/compiz has sluggish performance on dual-head with nvidia driver
Well, here's the problem, you have ancient nvidia bits installed. 285 is incompatible with the Ubuntu Precise xserver. DkmsStatus: nvidia-current, 285.05.09, 3.0.0-12-generic, x86_64: installedError! Could not locate dkms.conf file. File: does not exist. nvidia-current-updates, 280.13, 3.0.0-12-generic, x86_64: installed I'm not sure why that didn't upgrade on its own, but the way to work around this problem is to uninstall and apt-get purge nvidia*, and then reinstall nvidia using jockey. ** Changed in: nvidia-graphics-drivers (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of compiz packagers, which is subscribed to compiz in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/877438 Title: [8xxx] Unity/compiz has sluggish performance on dual-head with nvidia driver To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/877438/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~compiz Post to : compiz@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~compiz More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Compiz] [Bug 877438] Re: [8xxx] Unity/compiz has sluggish performance on dual-head with nvidia driver
I notice several bugs reporting similar problems with older nvidia cards: 877438 (8xxx cards), 940742 (6xxx cards), 943643 (9800), 958251 (8600), 962191 (7100). The problems include generally degraded performance, fuzzy fonts, and/or lagging in games, which did not exist in earlier versions of the nvidia driver. We've recently added a new 295-33 version of -nvidia to Ubuntu. The changelog doesn't specifically list a fix for this type of problem, but it does list a few performance fixes, and would be worth re-testing. Update to nvidia 295.33 and report back here whether or not it improved the performance. Note, you might be seeing crashes, corruption, or other assorted problems, but these may be separate bugs, let's just focus on the performance regression on this bug report. ** Changed in: nvidia-graphics-drivers (Ubuntu) Status: Triaged => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of compiz packagers, which is subscribed to compiz in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/877438 Title: [8xxx] Unity/compiz has sluggish performance on dual-head with nvidia driver To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/877438/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~compiz Post to : compiz@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~compiz More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Alright, thanks for all the feedback. Given that the boxes go away when logged out, and that Denver is on -radeon whereas Andreas is -intel, it is likely sounding not to be a driver issue. [Compiz] [Bug 904940] Re: compiz crashed with SIGABRT while changing external monitor configuration
Interesting! So, the processing of this bug report highlights several flaws in the processors: First, version 1:0.9.6-0ubuntu4.1 of compiz-plugins-main-default is not included in Precise (indeed, the SRU for including it in oneiric is blocked *because* the fix isn't in precise yet.) So the tracer should not have rejected the report based on this. Second, version 1:0.9.6-0ubuntu4.1 of compiz-plugins-main-default includes two bug fixes neither of which have to do with crashes, so this crash report is still valid. Third, for whatever reason, apport was unable to produce a valid trace. Perhaps this is due to something related to the first issue. Fourth, the core file has been deleted, even though I set the bug report to public when I filed it (the machine is a test box with no private data). If apport is unable to create a trace from a core dump on a public bug, it should not delete the core dump; again that just hides information which could be useful in tracking down the problem. ** Changed in: compiz (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid => Triaged -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of compiz packagers, which is subscribed to compiz in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/904940 Title: compiz crashed with SIGABRT while changing external monitor configuration To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/904940/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~compiz Post to : compiz@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~compiz More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

If it's solved in the new release and you think it's worth backporting the fix, please indicate that. Or if having the fix in the new release is good enough, feel free to close out the bug (or let us know and we'll close it.) If it's not solved, leave the bug report open. I can't promise we'll get to it (we get way more bugs filed than we can usually get to), but your testing and feedback can help out if and when we do. ** Changed in: xorg (Ubuntu) Status: New => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of compiz packagers, which is subscribed to compiz in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/792164 Title: Mouse can enter "no go" area of dual monitor setup To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/792164/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~compiz Post to : compiz@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~compiz More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Hey lcpak, Hi, thanks for reporting this issue during the development period of Ubuntu. I notice there's not been further comments to the bug report since the release came out, would you mind updating us on the status of it in the release? Are you still able to reproduce the issue? [Compiz] [Bug 769650] Re: dual monitor runs unusably slow (Asus 1000HE, Intel 945GME)
You've exceeded your hardware's maximum texture size (2048 x 2048). See LP: #555641 which this is basically a dupe of. Sounds like X switched to software rendering rather than crashing or something equally antisocial, so that's good. The real bug here is that gnome-display-properties apparently doesn't doublecheck the max texture size when compiz is active. It needs to tell the user the consequences of setting the root framebuffer size to be bigger than the max texture size when they try to apply it. ** Package changed: mesa (Ubuntu) => compiz (Ubuntu) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of compiz packagers, which is subscribed to compiz in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/769650 Title: dual monitor runs unusably slow (Asus 1000HE, Intel 945GME) ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~compiz Post to : compiz@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~compiz More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Compiz] [Bug 555641] Re: MASTER: max texture size prevents compiz from running
** Description changed: [Problem] Running compiz with dual-head enabled on certain graphics cards does not work. Compiz either errors out and refuses to run, or else fails with a black screen. Compiz displays the desktop as a 3D texture. The maximum texture size is determined by the hardware capabilities of the particular graphics card. Some older or lower end cards have a limitation of 2048x2048, which means if you set up a side-by-side arrangement, the sum of the horizontal resolutions could exceed 2048. Some example max texture limits: Radeon Xpress 200M: 2048x2048 Radeon X1600/X1900: 4096 x 4096 Radeon HD 2400: 8192 x 8192 Radeon HD 2600/4670/4850/4870: 8192 x 8192 GeForce 7300/7600: 4096 x 4096 Quadro FX 4500: 4096 x 4096 GeForce 8600/880/9400/9600/120/130/285: 8192 x 8192 Quadro FX 4800: 8192 x 8192 + i945: 2048 x 2048 GMA 950: 2048 x 2048 GMA X3100: 2048 x 2048 [Workarounds] A. If monitors are rectangular, arrange them above/below instead of left/right B. Turn off compiz [Original Report] I'm using a Lenovo S10-2 netbook (Intel GMA950 chipset, 1024x600 internal resolution). When I connect a VGA display (Samsung SyncMaster 757NF) and set it to span, both screens go black with only the mouse cursor visible. One click on the titlebar of a window on the left screen is sufficient to restore the rendering. I gather the click triggers a redraw event. [Compiz] [Bug 762264] [NEW] Dual-head initial render of left screen is wrong after login
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: compiz I have a dual-head desktop system with radeon RV770. I use a ~/.xprofile script to launch firefox and some pre-positioned xterms on the two screens. In metacity, they come up and are displayed correctly. Under unity/compiz, the right screen renders correctly but the left one shows part of the screen sort of stretched out horizontally (see photo 1). When I simply click the mouse on the firefox window, suddenly the screen redraws itself correctly (see photo 2). This is not a recent regression - I've seen it each time I boot into unity during natty development. In maverick, compiz worked correctly but I didn't try unity on that release. [Compiz] [Bug 745839] Re: compiz crashed with SIGSEGV in pthread_mutex_lock()
On the X/mesa side of things, this is really a dupe of bug 555641, which is basically a wishlist for upstream's Shatter functionality (which allows building a screen up from multiple texture buffers, each of which would fit within the gpu's texture limits). However, that functionality is a _long_ way off. In the mean time, I think compiz needs to include a check for the maximum texture size compared with the resolution during boot. This may be a compiz regression, since it used to do this in the past, c.f.: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=4166024 """ I am running an integrated ATi XPRESS 200 Series video card. Here is my COMPIZ : Checking for Xgl: not present. ... Checking for Composite extension: present. Comparing resolution (1440x900) to maximum 3D texture size (2048) Passed. ... """ So I will leave the compiz task open here. Possibly it's a dupe of other bugs, this is not an uncommon problem. I'm going to close out the mesa task as Won't Fix, since it's definitely a _valid_ issue, but not something we can really fix on the X side easily, rather than marking this as a dupe, since some work does need done on the compiz side here. (Btw, there may also need to be similar checks in gnome-settings-daemon if it is used to change monitor layouts while compiz is running, however that's a separate problem...) ** Changed in: mesa (Ubuntu) Status: New => Won't Fix ** Summary changed: - compiz crashed with SIGSEGV in pthread_mutex_lock() + [Xpress 200M] compiz crashed with SIGSEGV in pthread_mutex_lock() due to compiz loading on rez > texture size -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of compiz packagers, which is subscribed to compiz in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/745839 Title: [Xpress 200M] compiz crashed with SIGSEGV in pthread_mutex_lock() due to compiz loading on rez > texture size ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~compiz Post to : compiz@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~compiz More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
Some example max texture limits: + Radeon Xpress 200M: 2048x2048 Radeon X1600/X1900: 4096 x 4096 Radeon HD 2400: 8192 x 8192 Radeon HD 2600/4670/4850/4870: 8192 x 8192 GeForce 7300/7600: 4096 x 4096 Quadro FX 4500: 4096 x 4096 GeForce 8600/880/9400/9600/120/130/285: 8192 x 8192 Quadro FX 4800: 8192 x 8192 GMA 950: 2048 x 2048 GMA X3100: 2048 x 2048 [Workarounds] A. [Compiz] [Bug 745839] Re: compiz crashed with SIGSEGV in pthread_mutex_lock()
No, not really a driver issue. Rather, you're pushing the hardware beyond its capabilities. The X300 radeon card in the Xpress 200M is capable only of a maximum 2048x2048 combined screen dimension when running compiz. See bug #555641. Arrange your screens top/bottom instead of left/right and you should be fine (it'll fit inside the 2048x2048 limit.) Well, the workaround would be to use -nouveau with the experimental 3d mesa driver. But YMMV... that is unsupported and is a bit hit-or-miss for some people. Another thing to try would be to uninstall and re-install -nvidia, which should force a rebuild of the kernel driver. Kind of a long-shot though. Booting an earlier kernel might be worthwhile just in case it is a kernel ABI inconsistency. Hold down while booting to see the menu to select previously installed kernel versions. As far as debugging, you could peruse these general upstream links: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=58498 ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/270.30/README/knownissues.html I briefly scanned through them myself but didn't spot anything obviously applicable here. Perhaps something relevant would catch your eye though. Another place to check is the upstream forums: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=14 There are a couple reports of black screen / freezing bugs, but the symptoms sound slightly different than yours: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=159440 http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=159544 ** Changed in: nvidia-graphics-drivers (Ubuntu) Status: New => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of compiz packagers, which is subscribed to compiz in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/726496 Title: Cannot use Unity or Classic desktop with effects after the latest nvidia+xorg update ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~compiz Post to : compiz@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~compiz More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
