I can reproduce first part of the problem during an upgrade from 17.10
to 18.04 and the screen locks during the upgrade. It locks before u-r-u
issues the inhibit command and proceeds with the upgrade with the screen
locked.

I reproduced the second part of the problem (screen locks and fails to
unlock) after upgrading from 16.04 to 18.04 and before restarting the
machine (finish the upgrade, close the upgrader and wait until the
screen saver goes off)

The following lines are displayed in the journal:

- Setting "Wait for vertical refresh" to "On, unless application specifies" 
doesn't work.
- But setting enable "Force full screen redraw (buffer swap) on repaint" in 
CCSM does work.

strace shows that compiz loops on
ioctl(12, 0xc00c645c, 0x7fff3791e1f0)   = 0

where 12 is /dev/ati/card0

Daniel, I'd be happy to provide stack snapshots with gdb if you'd tell

Public bug reported:

TEST CASE:
1. Monitor compiz CPU usage (from /proc//stat or top in batch 
mode)
2. In "brightness and lock" settings set "Turn screen off when inactive" to 1 
minute
3. Wait until screen turns off
4. Move mouse or press a key to turn screen back on
5. Check the CPU usage from the monitor

ACTUAL RESULT:
When screen turns off compiz goes to 100%
When the screen turns back on, cpu usage drops immediately to a normal value
The graph attached shows %CPU of compiz with a sample per second. The graph has 
been captured on a system with  a Radeon HD5770 and fglrx if that matter

to requires very specific conditions to be triggered 2) restarting the

after a day testing, I've finally been able to reproduce but still
didn't find a pattern to do it reliably. It seems to happen after a
system upgrade.

lightdm logs are attached.

I noticed that each time it happens there is the following message in syslog
Oct  4 23:55:32 white kernel: [  175.787767] init: lightdm main process (909) 
killed by ABRT signal

installation and the other has been updated. 
It doesn't fail on every boot though.

I've been able to reproduce (bug 860317)

I opened a session and had a staking problem with the switcher, opened a
terminal and entered "unity --reset" to see if it improved things.

Since I didn't run the command in the background and couldn't close the
terminal, I opened another tab and entered the command again "unity
--reset &"

I tested alt-tab again to check if it fixed the problem (it did, at
least for that session) then closed both terminal tabs with CTRL+D, this
crash happened on close of the terminal

2. Grab the bottom-right corner of the window and resize it

Result
The window is not resized and the resize mask is visible until the application 
is closed.
ALT+Middle Button works fine
