[Compiz] [Bug 900367] Re: Window management - indicate the possibility of restoring (unmaximizing) a window by changing the pointer when it is over the menu bar

2013-01-24 Thread John Lea
** Description changed:

The cursor should indicate that a maximized window can be grabbed and
dragged downwards in order to restore (unmaximise) the window.

The idea is to change the current behavior of the cursor on the top
panel of a maximized window in something like in the attached mockup.

  Desired solution

- - When a user moves the pointer over the dragable area of both a window title
bars and (when a window is maximised) the top bar, the pointer should change to
displaying 'grabbing hand'. The pointer should revert to it's normal state as
soon as it is outside of the dragable area.
- - The 'grabbing hand' is the hand that is currently displayed when a user
holds the left mouse button down when over one of areas defined above.
+ - When a user moves the pointer over the dragable area of both a window
+ title bars and (when a window is maximised) the top bar, the pointer
+ should change to displaying the 'hand fingered' pointer. The pointer
+ should revert to it's normal state as soon as it is outside of the
+ dragable area.
+
+ - When the user presses the mouse or touchpad button the 'hand fingered'
+ pointer should change to the 'grabbing hand'. When the user releases
+ the button the pointer should return to being 'hand fingered'.
+
+ - The 'grabbing hand' is the hand that is currently displayed when a
+ user holds the left mouse button down when over one of areas defined
+ above.

[Compiz] [Bug 933776] Re: [regression] scale/spread: Initiate Window Picker for All Windows does not show all windows. It shows only windows from curent workspace.

2012-12-12 Thread John Lea
@desgua; that's because it is the current implementation, and people
generally don't comment if they are happy with the status quo.

We had *a lot* of requests from the community to make the change
described in bug #689733, so this debate is really is 6 of one, half a
dozen of another.

If we were to change the behaviour around to what it was before bug
#689733 was implemented I guarantee we will have an equal number of
people complaining that I use workspaces to segment tasks/areas of
life/contexts, for example I have one workspace for personal stuff I use
in my lunch break, another workspace I use for work, and another
workspace dedicated to the report I am working on. I use workspaces so
that I can focus on the task at hand, please don't always display
windows from other workspaces that I am not currently using.

The issue is that there are several valid different ways of using
workspaces, and we don't want to make a change that will inconvenience
all the users who requested that we make the change described in bug
#689733 in the first place.

This is why this bug requests that this behaviour is made configurable
in System Settings:

--

- In the short term what we can do is expose this option in 'System
Settings / Keyboard / Shortcuts'. We can add two new actions to this
panel:

'Spread all windows on the current workspace' (default setting: Super+W)
and
'Spread all windows on all workspaces' (default setting: Disabled)

and then it will be easy for users to choose the behaviour that suites
them best.

--

Can you see any alternative means of making all classes of workspace
users happy without introducing this configuration option?

[Compiz] [Bug 796594] Re: Window management - pressing the 'restore' window indicator on a semi-maximised window should return it to the restored state

2012-11-19 Thread John Lea
** Changed in: compiz
Assignee: Sam Spilsbury (smspillaz) = (unassigned)

** Description changed:

Note: See comment #12, semi-maximised windows are still not restoring to
  the correct position.

The 'restore' window indicator does not interact correctly with the
  semi-maximised or vertically-maximised states.

  To reproduce:
  1. Restore a window
  2. Semi-maximise the same window
  3. Press the restore indicator

What currently happens: The window maximizes
What should happen: The window should switch back to the restored state, with
*exactly the same height and width it had before it was semi-maximised*

  TESTCASE:

^ What should happen is what should happen ;-)

Note that this behaviour should also apply to the vertically-maximised
- window state that Didier will hopefully be implementing this cycle ;-)
+ window state.

[Compiz] [Bug 900367] Re: Window management - indicate the possibility of restoring (unmaximizing) a window by changing the pointer when it is over the menu bar

2012-10-15 Thread John Lea
** Summary changed:

- indicate unmaximizing of app - at curser over top-panel
+ Window management - indicate the possibility of restoring (unmaximizing) a
window by changing the pointer when it is over the menu bar

** Description changed:

- The cursor should indicate that a maximized window can be grabbed down.
+ The cursor should indicate that a maximized window can be grabbed and
+ dragged downwards in order to restore (unmaximise) the window.

+ - When a user moves the pointer over the dragable area of both a window title
bars and (when a window is maximised) the top bar, the pointer should change to
displaying 'grabbing hand'. The pointer should revert to it's normal state as
soon as it is outside of the dragable area.
  - The 'grabbing hand' is the hand that is currently displayed when a user
holds the left mouse button down when over one of areas defined above.

added to top of description.

** Description changed:

+ Note: reverting bug to triarged because the fix is not complete. When
+ tested the correct behavour of the window should return to exactly the
+ same state it had at the beginning of step 1. is not fulfilled.
+
+ ---
+
Window management - When a Semi-maximising a window is maximised by
clicking on the window decorations and then returned to the semi-
maximised state, the window position jumps so the the window title bar
is hidden underneath the top bar.

  One way reproduce the bug:
  1. Take a restored window
  2. Semi-maximise the window
  3. Press CTRL + SUPER + UP ARROW to maximise the window
  4. Click on the 'restore' window decoration to return the window to the
restored state state.

  What currently incorrectly happens:
  - After performing step 3, the window returns to a weird state where it is
restored, but in the size and shape of a semi-maximised window, and the
position is also offset from what would be expected from a semi-maximised
window. This is especially problematic because in some cases the window is
positioned so that all of the window title bar is underneath the top bar,
making it impossible for a user to move the window without knowing a keyboard
shortcut.

See the attached screencast window_positioning_issue.ogv to see the
bug in action. (In the screencast this bug is reproduced using the
window decorations instead of the Alt+F10 shortcut, which won't be
  possible after bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/796594
  is fixed)

  Desired behavour:
  - On pressing the 'restore' window decoration in step 4 of the bug
reproduction instructions, the window should return to exactly the same state
it had at the beginning of step 1.
  - When fixing this bug, also review and look at fixing bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/796594 as these issues are
related

  ---

Another way to reproduce the bug:
  1. Semi-maximise the Thunderbird main window
  2. Press the 'restore' window decoration (button on the far right of the 3
button cluster)

  What currently incorrectly happens:
  - The window jumps up so that the window title bar in underneath the top bar

  What should happen
  - The window should return to it's previous 'restored' state.

2012-10-10 Thread John Lea
@mc-return; I'm changing the status of this bug back to Opinion because
it is a design change. However if you could attach a screencast of the
requested animation, we will review it against our existing animation
and make a decision on whether or not this change should land.

Sorry about this, but it is really a design change, not a bug fix,
christian giordano needs to signoff all animation changes.

[Compiz] [Bug 796594] Re: Window management - pressing the 'restore' window indicator on a semi-maximised window should return it to the restored state

2012-10-10 Thread John Lea
** Changed in: ayatana-design
   Importance: High = Critical

** Description changed:

+ Note: See comment #12, semi-maximised windows are still not restoring to
+ the correct position.
+
+
+
The 'restore' window indicator does not interact correctly with the
  semi-maximised or vertically-maximised states.

  To reproduce:
  1. Restore a window
  2. Semi-maximise the same window
  3. Press the restore indicator

What currently happens: The window maximizes
What should happen: The window should switch back to the restored state, with
*exactly the same height and width it had before it was semi-maximised*

  TESTCASE:

^ What should happen is what should happen ;-)

Note that this behaviour should also apply to the vertically-maximised
window state that Didier will hopefully be implementing this cycle ;-)

[Compiz] [Bug 1040455] Re: Setting the UnMinimize animation is ignored (default animation still used)

2012-09-04 Thread John Lea
** Description changed:

Setting the UnMinimize animation is ignored (Minimize animation still
  used)
+
+
+ Alternative description:
+
+ In the Beta 1 release of 12.10, the unminimize animation has changed to
+ using the magic lamp effect. This is incorrect, and this change needs
+ to be reverted to the previous Glide 2 plus Fade effects.
+
+ Both visual design and Christian Giordano (who is responsible for Unity
+ animations) and reviewed this change, and request that it be reverted to
+ its previous value.
+
+ Marking as 'Critical' because this is a very visible user interface
+ regression that needs to be fixed asap.

[Compiz] [Bug 682788] Re: Improve Unity menus

2012-09-03 Thread John Lea
** Description changed:

  ===+++ _ ! ALL USERS ! _ +++===
===+++ READ THIS BEFORE MAKING A COMMENT OR MODIFICATION +++===

IMPORTANT 1: Please don't post any me too message; use the Does this
bug affect you? feature you can find a bit above this bug description
  on Launchpad.

IMPORTANT 2: Do not post anything if you haven't read all comments to
verify that your point hasn't been made. If you feel tempted to stop
reading because there are too many messages, that is a strong indicator
that you shouldn't add even more comments. Developers have a tough time
to find anything if you post redundant stuff. So please abstain from
  doing that.

Global menu in general (not only in Unity) is very unergonomic on large
screens (see the attached screenshot) because if you have a small window
somewhere near the low right corner you have to move the cursor all the way up
to to panel to reach the menu. I understand why the global menu was used for
the netbook edition (it saves space and most windows are maximized), but since
Unity is intended to be for the desktop edition there should be an option to
switch to the traditional position of the app menu. It would be welcomed by
many desktop users.

  A commonly suggested solution is:
   [ ] Global Menu on
   [ ] Global Menu off
[ ] Global Menu only for maximized windows
The default is usually suggested as either the first (on) or last (on only
for maximized windows).

  -
  Desired change:

Implement the 'Enhanced Menu' project for 12.10. This project will
address the issue described in this bug and also issues described in the
duplicates of this bus. Note this is the 'official' bug that tracks the
  implementation of this project.

The following options will be added to 'System Settings/Appearance':

  ---
  Menus
  Location:Global/Local
  Visibility: Hidden/Always displayed
  ---
-
- More details to follow during the 12.10 cycle... ;-)

[Compiz] [Bug 1045346] [NEW] Window management, Launcher - The unminimize animation should use the usual Glide 2 and Fade effects, NOT the magic lamp effect

2012-09-03 Thread John Lea
Public bug reported:

In the Beta 1 release of 12.10, the unminimize animation has changed to
using the magic lamp effect. This is incorrect, and this change needs
to be reverted to the previous Glide 2 plus Fade effects.

Both visual design and Christian Giordano (who is responsible for Unity
animations) and reviewed this change, and request that it be reverted to
its previous value.

Marking as 'Critical' because this is a very visible user interface
regression that needs to be fixed asap.

Any animation changes really need to be run past Otto and Christian
*before* they land; if there is any questions of whether something needs
to be reviewed before landing ping me on IRC.
