[Compiz] [Bug 2055242] [NEW] compiz build-depends on libxorg-gtest-dev, removed in Debian unstable

2024-02-27 Thread Steve Langasek
Public bug reported:

The compiz package in Ubuntu build-depends on libxorg-gtest-dev, but
xorg-gtest was removed from Debian unstable a year ago. The compiz
package in Debian has a higher epoch but is a lower upstream version
number for whatever reason. It's possible compiz could be merged from
Debian to fix this issue; or cherry pick a fix for this build-
dependency. Otherwise, we should probably force-sync the Debian
version.

[Compiz] [Bug 1986681] Re: Minimizing windows in gnome-flashback changes button colors

2022-08-26 Thread Steve Langasek
Hello voidstarstar, or anyone else affected,

Accepted compiz into jammy-proposed. The package will build now and be
available at
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/1:0.9.14.1+22.04.20220820-0ubuntu1
in a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been
performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed-
jammy to verification-done-jammy. If it does not fix the bug for you,
please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-
failed-jammy. In either case, without details of your testing we will
not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s)
fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in
-proposed for a minimum of 7 days.

Ok, but we still need to know how to inhibit the screen locking in compiz,
since the previous standard method is ineffective.

[Compiz] [Bug 1778817] Re: release upgrade from xenial to bionic desktop: screen locks itself, password to unlock fails

2018-06-26 Thread Steve Langasek
The failure is because pam_unix depends on libcrypt, and libcrypt is
part of glibc, and compiz doesn't otherwise have libcrypt loaded into
memory, and libcrypt has a tight versioned dependency on the
corresponding version of libc itself (requires symbol GLIBC_2.25). So

[Compiz] [Bug 1598770] Please test proposed package

2016-07-15 Thread Steve Langasek
Hello Marco, or anyone else affected,

Accepted unity into xenial-proposed. The package will build now and be
available at
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/7.4.0+16.04.20160715-0ubuntu1
in a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to
enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this update
out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, and change the tag
from verification-needed to verification-done. If it does not fix the
bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to
verification-failed. In either case, details of your testing will help
us make a better decision.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at

[Compiz] [Bug 1555237] Re: Upgrade from 14.04.4→ 16.04 dies midway taking out the session.

2016-03-25 Thread Steve Langasek
Context in /var/log/syslog shows:

Mar 25 22:31:39 trusty-upgrade udisksd[2392]: Acquired the name
org.freedesktop.UDisks2 on the system message bus
Mar 25 22:31:39 trusty-upgrade kernel: [ 7166.057324] init: dbus main process
(374) killed by KILL signal
Mar 25 22:31:39 trusty-upgrade kernel: [ 7166.057335] init: dbus main process
ended, respawning

This points towards udisks2 being the culprit, since the other packages
that were configured at 22:31:39 happened after udisks2.

The only reference I find to SIGKILL is in invoke-rc.d, which uses it
only in its force-stop command and only when pid1 is systemd. So I
currently have no explanation for this behavior.

[Compiz] [Bug 1555237] Re: Upgrade from 14.04.4→ 16.04 dies midway taking out the session.

2016-03-25 Thread Steve Langasek
I was able to reproduce this problem in a VM. Running X and compiz
under gdb, I find that compiz is dying after the X server is killed with
SIGKILL.

I also see this in /var/log/syslog:

Mar 25 22:31:40 trusty-upgrade kernel: [ 7167.438442] init: lightdm
post-stop process (2433) killed by KILL signal

There is no evidence in dmesg that this is OOM related. So something
appears to be inappropriately kill -9'ing lightdm on upgrade.

This is not the only process in /var/log/syslog showing as killed with
SIGKILL.

The first of these happens in the logs at 22:31:39. At that time,
/var/log/dpkg shows these packages being configured: udisks desktop-
file-utils gvfs-common gvfs-libs gvfs-daemons gvfs psmisc python-gi.

/var/log/dist-upgrade/apt-term.log doesn't show anything particularly
illuminating.

Attaching the contents of /var/log.

[Compiz] [Bug 1282900] [NEW] compiz static window switcher no longer displaying window titles after upgrade

2014-02-20 Thread Steve Langasek
Public bug reported:

I have my Unity desktop configured to use the static application
switcher plugin. After upgrading to compiz
1:0.9.11+14.04.20140218-0ubuntu1 (and related packages) today, and
restarting my session, I find that the window switcher no longer
displays window titles. This is a major regression - the whole reason
I'm using the static switcher is because a thumbnail-based picker is
useless for distinguishing between many similar-looking windows!

I was going to look at tracking this down in the code, but the previous
version I had installed, 1:0.9.10+13.10.20131011-0ubuntu4, has no
matching commit in the compiz bzr branch; there are no per-upload tags,
and the changelog deltas are inserted on top of a tree that doesn't
match what was uploaded. So it's not very practical to track this back
to a related commit.

I believe there is a separate bug report open for this. And no, it's not
"the first virtual desktop", it's "the current virtual desktop".

[Compiz] [Bug 1247277] [NEW] connect/disconnect external monitor causes window positions to be changed

2013-11-01 Thread Steve Langasek
Public bug reported:

This is a continuation of bug #763148, which has been marked as
resolved. While compiz no longer moves windows between workspaces, it
still moves the windows around within each workspace, and in particular
tends to wrap windows that are far to the right/bottom over to the
left/top.

The expected behavior is that, if there is a saved geometry for a
window, it's restored; and if the window is off the new window geometry,
the window is /shifted/ to fit on the workspace instead of being
wrapped.

This was working 100% correctly for me as of commit 3646 on lp:~compiz-
team/compiz/0.9.9/ back in April, but it almost immediately regressed
due to behavior changes in a different plugin and was broken by the time
13.04 released.

Here's some xev output. But doesn't this suffer from the fundamental
problem that xev only shows the keypresses that are seen by the xev window?
(Whereas Alt+Tab is handled by the WM)

External keyboard, ThinkPad X201, user who is very fast at Alt+Tab'ing

[Compiz] [Bug 923410] Re: HUD - closing a window with + opens the hud

2012-05-15 Thread Steve Langasek
My bug #977683 was marked as a duplicate of this one, and definitely is
still an issue. The tap detection seems to not take into account other
non-alt chordic keypresses, and the timeout is designed for slow typers.
Whenever I alt+tab quickly between windows, this is still an issue for
me.

[Compiz] [Bug 887260] Re: compiz+unity3d draws 3W more power than metacity+unity2d when idle

2012-02-01 Thread Steve Langasek
I analyze my system's power consumption obsessively with powertop. If
bug #917210 had shown up at the time I filed this bug with wake-ups
directly attributable to compiz or unity, I'm pretty sure I would have
noticed this. Also, as noted in comment #5, i915_enable_rc6 seems to
have had a noticable impact on the power consumption when running unity.

Next time I restart my laptop, I can check out the power consumption of
the 3d session and see how it compares with the version in your ppa.

The intel-drm-next kernel I'm currently running has i915.i915_enable_rc6 set
by default. I can confirm that there's no measurable difference in power
consumption between unity2d and unity3d when idle with this kernel version.

(The baseline power consumption seems to be higher overall for
reasons that I have yet to determine; but that's definitely not tied to
unity or compiz.)

[Compiz] [Bug 887260] [NEW] compiz+unity3d draws 3W more power than metacity+unity2d when idle

2011-11-07 Thread Steve Langasek
Public bug reported:

When running the Ubuntu 3D desktop (with Unity 3D and compiz), my system
draws 3W more power when idle than when I run unity2d+metacity. This is
a 25% increase in power consumption vs. idle draw with wireless on, and
a 33% increase over idle draw with wireless off.

This is all when *idle*, i.e., nothing moving around on the screen... so
there's no reason for the graphics chip to be drawing this kind of power
because there's no 3d rendering that needs to be done.

Must be a bug somewhere.

[Compiz] [Bug 856310] Re: (oneiric) update manager puts main window on one screen, progress window on another screen

2011-09-22 Thread Steve Langasek
update-manager certainly has no idea about the boundaries between
screens in the output (and architecturally, should not). Maybe it can
be doing a better job of asking the window manager to place its progress
window nearby, but I'm guessing we need this to be handled by the window
manager itself (i.e., compiz). Reassigning.

afraid there's not much that can be done about this problem in the short
