I get exactly this same behavior on my Lenovo w520 laptop ever since 14.04.1. There appears to be nothing wrong with the nvidia drivers. The driver hasn't changed and neither has my xorg.conf since the update. If I boot without my external display connected, then after a few seconds I hear the ubuntu "drums" sound event that normally plays whenever the login screen is displayed, but the login screen doesn't show on the built-in display. Only the purple boot screen displays. If I connect my external display, I do see the login screen. Once I authenticate with my external display connected, my built-in display will display the desktop. I've re-installed 14.04 at least 3 times, and I keep getting this behavior. After a complete re-install of 14.04 with all updates, it works. Yeah exactly, sry! But it looks like the login screen is already present, but not on the laptop's screen. It seems like the system uses the external monitors, even if they are not connected. Because if I type something and hit enter (like I would do on the login screen) and afterwards put the laptop into the dock, I can see the "wrong credentials"-warning on the login-screen displayed on the external monitors. Maybe this helps too: * Most of the time the laptop is in the dock and I leave the lid always closed in this case. So I'm only using the two external monitors. I installed the above updates in this state. * During the day before this update I booted the laptop without sitting in the dock with no problems. * nvidia-settings only displays the two external monitors, the display settings of Ubuntu also shows the laptop's display (but disabled).
