Re: [CGUYS] No Internet for You [Was: MS IE 7]
Draw a parallel to my DVR. I really love my DVR. I can't imagine watching TV any other way. My DVR works fine -- probably has years of life in it. I have a lifetime subscription to the programming service. Yet my DVR only knows the NTSC standard and NTSC is going away in 14 months. So I am unhappy about progress too. So buy an ATSC converter intended for televisions and go on using your DVR which will likely quite happily accept the signal from the converter and record it, then play it back in glorious NTSC. If you wait, you can even get coupons likely to be worth $40-$50 to apply to the purchase of two different converters. The same technique can be applied to VCRs, old televisions and whatever other electronics you possess which rely on NTSC. February 2009 isn't the end of the world. The downside is that you won't have the same video quality that others get, but considering what there is to watch, I'm not sure seeing acne scars and the like on folks who are supposedly beautiful is that much of a benefit. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? My reading suggests that it has all the necessary features, but only enough storage for 20 hours. However, the new model has an eSATA port that lets you add a 2nd drive. With big drives selling for low prices this is very appealing. But I have read so many bad stories about Tivo. The one I'm most concerned about is that Tivo deletes stored shows after a few weeks and there is no setting to prevent this. I like to hold on to some shows for a long time. I often collect an entire mini-series to watch at one sitting and it may take me a couple of months to find the time to do that. If Tivo deletes shows as it pleases that won't work for me at all. Re: [CGUYS] USB Turntable?
For the workout times I bought myself a cheap (as in 45 bux) 2 gig sony flash mp3 player with built in tuner. It's also water (sweat) resistant. So the only problem is the audible one...course there is always the library for some books just to work out with. I can think of plenty of up-tempo music for exercising, but I can't imagine what kind of audio book would be suitable! * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? [CGUYS] RIP in printing
One of our departments just purchased a 60 HP plotter for a Mac system. The only software they got with it was the drivers. When I worked in a photo lab 10 years ago, we had to use a separate RIP program to send items to the printer. This printer is on our LAN. Every time they try to send a file directly to the printer, they get a wrong file message. I've looked through the Reference guide, it makes reference to the Embedded Web Server. Our IT guys are out until Friday, so I was trying to lend a hand. Any thoughts? tia. david David Turk Manager, Preservation Imaging Services Indiana Historical Society 450 W. Re: [CGUYS] DVRs [Was: No Internet for You [Was: MS IE 7]
I have TIVO and just recently added my second box. What you heard is correct and wrong. If the interface is the same as mine (No HD not available in our area.) Tivo's are set to erase programs after a set time to free up room on your DVR. You can mark programs to keep until you delete them easily on the menu. I do this with stuff I have not had a chance to transfer to my PC to convert and burn or turn into MPG's. Yes that is the other neat thing I like about them. I can use Roxio and convert my TIVO files into a normal MPG and make them into DVD's if I want. TIVO is a subscription service but comes with it's own menu's, and the ability to set your DVR remotely using a computer, What abd storeis have you eahrd about them? I have two Series two models an 80 HR dual tuner one, and a 40 hr single tuner model. One is direct wired into my router and the other one is wireless. (TIVO wireless G adapter) Oh we have Charter Cable and they have nothing available like this locally. [CGUYS] TIVO?
FYI, there is a Save until I delete setting for what is recorded. I got one last year for free (one of the output ports was bad so I just used the RF connection). I never wanted or needed a subscription (my viewing choices are simple and I know how to program it to record when I want it to), so what goes into TIVO, stays in TIVO until I delete it. TIVO will delete shows after a certain time period to make room for new recordings if they haven't been marked as Save until I delete. Otherwise, I control what is stored. Right now I have the PBS WW11 series stored because I haven't taken the time to watch the whole thing yet. Richard P. Re: [CGUYS] No Internet for You [Was: MS IE 7]
I rarely use IE since the last one for Macs was v.5.5. I was at the public library today looking up some reference information--couldn't find it in Reference so I looked online. They have IE 6. I've requested that they get Firefox too, so we could have a choice [of something that works]. It was at least my tenth request, but it's still only IE 6. When I travel and use Internet cafes, I ask for a choice and almost every time, when I return they've installed Firefox. One place asked me to download it for him, then he installed it. [Nine out of ten so far.] Why not just get an U3 USB drive and run it from there? Problem solved and you can quit nagging people. Every place that switched had people thanking them; they thanked us when we returned after they installed Firefox. Solving an annoying IE problem is not nagging. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? Re: [CGUYS] USB Turntable?
Hey, Don't knock it! I've spent years and hundreds of hours on our county ReCenter treadmill listening to mysteries, suspense, police procedurals, etc. Been through all of Michael Connelly, John Grisham, David Baldacci, Donald Westlake, Carl Hiaasen and many more. In fact, the best device I've found is the 2nd generation iPod Shuffle. Never switch to shuffle mode and it makes a great sequential player from ripped CD books from the library. Clips to the collar of my workout shirt. Tom Piwowar wrote: For the workout times I bought myself a cheap (as in 45 bux) 2 gig sony flash mp3 player with built in tuner. Re: [CGUYS] DVRs [Was: No Internet for You [Was: MS IE 7]
I've done both the kit from Weaknees and prepared my own harddrive and installed it. Weaknees has excellent instructions on the website for the installation of the disc drive in a variety of machines. That's one of the winning features of the Series 3: they have an eSATA port. From the user reports I read there is no hocus-pocus required, just plug in an eSATA drive and Tivo starts to use it. I upgraded the drive in my Replay, but that was a lot of work. I had to download a utility and UNIX distribution on floppy to boot my PC with. Then copy C: to D: -- I think that took about 10 hours. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? Re: [CGUYS] TIVO?
Nope it is just to keep room on the system (Their hour numbers are at the lowest quality setting, so an 80 hour TIVo is really about 30 at highest quality recording a lot like the old VHS tapes that were advertised as 6 hour but really were 2 hour.) As you put more and more programs on it, the retain time gets shorter and shorter. I usually review my stuff, things I have not seen, I mark do not delete until I tell you too, and then watch it when I get a chance and if I want to keep it, retain it or transfer it to my PC. Stewart At 04:29 PM 12/5/2007, you wrote: FYI, there is a Save until I delete setting for what is recorded. Re: [CGUYS] RIP in printing
Any thoughts? tia. OS X will rasterize files so you may be fine without RIP software. Most printers today have an Embedded Web Server for configuration purposes. You can use Network Utility's send out a broadcast ping to 192.168.0.255 and 192.168.1.255 to see what answers. (To see all the different addresses tht answer you should run a set of 10 pings or so. If you only send 1 the utility will stop listening as soon as it gets 1 reply.) Then fire up your web browser and try the likely suspects. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? Re: [CGUYS] DVRs [Was: No Internet for You [Was: MS IE 7]
Tivo's are set to erase programs after a set time to free up room on your DVR My Replay can be set to save a certain number of shows and will delete the oldest when a new show arrives. This is reserved space and is independent of anything else going on in the box. Can Tivo do this? I do this with stuff I have not had a chance to transfer to my PC to convert and burn or turn into MPG's. Yes that is the other neat thing I like about them. My Replay will let me output, but only using the RF port. That additional conversion degrades the signal too much. Does Tivo offer a less lossy option? What abd storeis have you eahrd about them? I read that they enforce a very broad interpretation of DRM. That Tivo enforces automatic deletion after you play a program. That the program owner can set it to automatically delete shows after 24 or 48 hours even if you don't watch them. That the program owner can disable the ability to fast forward during commercial breaks. That it monitors usage and uploads detailed usage data to the mothership. I do like how it handles presets although I would like it to be able to save a few sets of presets so I could have all the gym's FM stations for the TV on a separate set. This is the sort of thing Apple would really rock at if Steve cared about it. I think the worst 'feature' of the thing is how the cable that attaches to dock like the iPod's USB data cable with the cord coming out of the center. It's not bad for something that will be laying on a table but for something designed to be used while moving around it isn't such a good Idea. It would work better if there were a small box at the dock with a second head phone jack or maybe a small antenna. Now it probably uses the headphone cord as an FM antenna. It is just a real kludge of a device to get a check box. It really lacks the Apple elegance that I have come to expect. There are too many occasions where I want a radio and end up carrying one in addition to my iPod.. That mass of cable is as big as some small radios I've owned. Heck it is bad enough to make me consider buying a Zune. On Dec 4, 2007 7:55 PM, Steve at Verizon [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Actually, Apple does make an iPod Radio Remote for $49. But I have recorded and downloaded and burned a number of different TV programs without a hitch. earlier in the season I downloaded and watched previews (Pilot programs) of some of the fall TV programs. I kept them well past the airing of the Pilots on broadcast without a problem. Oh no commercials in these previews NICE!
