Re: [CGUYS] Outlook Express Problem

2007-12-07 Thread Andy Gallant
I checked the MS Knowledge Base and got some OE-related hits that
looked, well, interesting.

1. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917288: Error message when you open
the Windows Address Book or you open Outlook Express after you install
cumulative security update 911567 (MS06-016). CAUSE - Most of the time,
these symptoms are caused by a corruption in the Address Book.
Frequently, the corruption occurs over time in address books that were
created in older versions of Outlook Express. Earlier versions of
Outlook Express did not detect this corruption, and the address book
functionality was not affected. After you install cumulative security
update 911567, Outlook Express examines each address book file for
corruption. If Outlook Express detects corruption, you receive an error
message.

2. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/269777: OLEXP: Error Message:
Address Book Failed to Load. CAUSE - The Windows Address Book file used
by Outlook Express is marked with the read-only attribute.

3. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/239135: Error Message: The Message
Could Not Be Sent. Some of the Recipients for This Message Are Not
Valid. CAUSE - This issue can occur if the Wab32.dll file is damaged.

There's also a recently updated page on the System File Checker tool at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310747/en-us. The /scannow option looks
like the one to try, but since it could make changes, I would do a full
backup first, just in case.

Good luck.

Outlook Express 6 is no longer operational. As a rule, I never
choose to
use it (Thunderbird is default), but the Fuji Photo program
insists on

using it in order to email photos. It was working fine last week but
since then I've upgraded to IE7 from IE6. The error I now get when
trying to use OE6 is:
The address book failed to load. Outlook Express is incorrectly
configured, please reinstall
I don't know how to reinstall it, seeing as it came with the
computer.

Is this an IE7 issue? I would appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks in advance,

[CGUYS] Usb for phono

2007-12-07 Thread Myers, Jeffrey
Oh, *%(, I messed up! I thought my device for connecting my
phonograph to a computer was connected to my computer via usb, but it
isn't. I have it in the audio input, not usb. Sorry, I haven't used it
in awhile and forgot. My bad.

It is still, however, a very good way to get old LPs to a computer.

Sorry,

Re: [CGUYS] Outlook Express Problem

2007-12-07 Thread Richard P.
Well, I'm making progress. Tried all suggestions w/o success but found
the root of the issue accidentally during the process. Outlook Express 6
only works when the user has administrative rights. OE6 gives error the
messages when trying to use it as a limited user. I have been able to
reproduce this consistently.

Has anyone ever heard of this and is there a solution/setting I am
missing or is this a bug? FYI, I was able to uninstall/reinstall OE so
that is not the issue. Also, I understand that while I could run OE as
an administrator, that would not be the safe thing to do (viruses,
spyware, oh my).

Thanks,

Richard

I agree with Tom that HIS.com is great (if a bit pricey). We've used
them since 1996 and they are a terrific, reliable, local company,

I've tried 1and1 and they are also good. I have dropped them in

bluehost's support is more knowledgeable.

itself is entirely platform transparent but tech support often isn't.

A Mac friendly ISP is HIS.com

I favor 1and1.com due to their good prices and many included services.
Their online documentation is extensive and they answer the phone 24/7.
Service has been great. I am gradually moving my web hosting to 1and1.

I don't want to get, just anything. Jeff Wright suggested some at the

from the company BUT, they look much bigger. Jeff, I am still going to

My case has feet that are plastic, swivel and, are shaped, almost, like

Re: [CGUYS] Tbird glitch

2007-12-07 Thread Tom Piwowar
At Mozilla HELP it told me I should be able to bring up the Profile
Manager and create a new Profile. I double click the Tbird icon
while holding down the Option key, but all that accomplishes is that it
toggles the Mail News groups window hidden and visible.???

My experience with FireFox is that keybpard gymnastics are often
ineffective. I have to launch it via the command line so I can specify
the switches. Pergaps TBird has the same issue.

I also have some other minor but aggravating issues with this Mac and I
realize that I will soon need to upgrade the OS or move up to a newer
machine.

Caution on upgrading when your system is not squeaky clean. Ungrade in
place can make matters worse. Use clean install or archive and install to
drive out the gremlins.

I have a dual 1.8 G5 but the processors are not Intel and my guess is
that a lot of the newer features will probably not work farther down the
line.

Leopard should work fine. X.6 will probably be the end of the line for
you.

Re: [CGUYS] offlist Re: [CGUYS] Outlook Express Problem

2007-12-07 Thread Richard P.
This is narrowing it down. A limited user cannot open the address book
while the Administrator can. The MS KB seems to address it here,
although this looks to be for Win 98/OE4:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/269778/en-us
I get an error:
The Address Book file has been locked by another application. Please
close the other application and try again later.
I followed the instructions for repair but it didn't change anything
though and upon reboot, the read-only attributes which I had unchecked
during the repair were marked again.

FYI, when reinstalling OE, there were no prompts for choices.

Thanks for your help and I'm still game to try anything else.

Thanks,

Richard P.

seems weird - can you run Start All Programs Accessories Address
Book all by itself? can you do so as a limited user?
when you reinstalled oe, were you offered any choices? (some programs
ask if they should be for just the one user or for all users).

otherwise, i'm stumped (and i'm not an expert). sorry. good luck.

Well, I'm making progress. Tried all suggestions w/o success but
found the root of the issue accidentally during the process. Outlook
Express 6 only works when the user has administrative rights. OE6
gives error the messages when trying to use it as a limited user. I
have been able to reproduce this consistently.

Has anyone ever heard of this and is there a solution/setting I am
missing or is this a bug? FYI, I was able to uninstall/reinstall OE
so that is not the issue. Also, I understand that while I could run
OE as an administrator, that would not be the safe thing to do
(viruses, spyware, oh my).

Thanks,

I know I am asking again. I contacted the company about the case feet
problem. They sent me a set of feet but, they are the type that can
only go on the bottom of a desktop case. I told them about the ones' I
received and, they suggested I take some pictures of the case, which I
did. They got back to me and, told me, my case is Antec's KS188. They
also told me, that, Antec discontinued the production of this case
several years ago so, I can't get it from them. I do find plenty of
pictures and, discussion about the case, on Google but, I am not having
any luck finding, discontinued parts. Would anyone have any idea, why
 I
might be able to get the feet for this case?

Re: [CGUYS] Tbird glitch

2007-12-07 Thread b_s-wilk

John,

I think that the best thing to do is to create a new profile. I've had
some very strange bugs mess with Tbird and SeaMonkey [I usually use the
latest beta with SM so I expect that, but my Tbird is the latest
release.] There are probably damaged files in the prefs, but it's hard
to determine which one.

Migrating your old settings to a new profile isn't as simple as dragging
you mail and settings from one profile to another. Explanation here,
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Migrating_settings_to_a_new_profile. The main
info about the profile data location is in the Application Registry in
the Mozilla folder in your User Library. I've played around with this,
since I've set up SeaMonkey and Firefox to share bookmarks, and I had
Thunderbird and SeaMonkey sharing email prefs until the latest SeaMonkey
release. Since I download new versions every few weeks, it's
time-consuming to re-link files each time.

Easiest way to access these files is to put the Tbird default folder in
the sidebar, so you can find it quickly. I put an alias for both Tbird
and Firefox prefs in my Mozilla prefs folder which is in my sidebar. The
cache folder is on my desktop with an alias in my user library moz
folder. Works for me.

If you can't find the fix try the mozillazine, and
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/. Might be a bug that's been reported in
Bugzilla. Also upgrade to Tiger, but wait until Spring for Leopard. Keep
your desktop and hard drive 'clean', i.e. no apps on your desktop, files
in more or less appropriate folders, archive things you don't need right
now. Panther is more forgiving than Jaguar. Tiger is more forgiving than
Panther. Just don't throw everything on your desktop like my husband
does, then wonders why his Mac failed to boot into anything other than
? this week. I break all those rules, including having my TBird and
Mozilla prefs on a separate drive on a user desktop--works for me!

Have fun.

Betty

I am using Thunderbird 2.0.0.9 on my Mac G5 at 10.39

Somewhere during one of the point upgrades I lost the ability
to see any header info. Normal or all.

Details here,
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_:_FAQs_:_About:config_Entries, so
you don't break anything. When you fix it, back up the prefs.

About:config allows you to edit/change prefs in all Mozilla
applications.

Betty

Thanks for the response Betty. I had changed all the references
to headers to DEFAULT in the Config editor. There are more than
you would think. I also ran disk utility to repair permissions
which usually fixes most problems.

There is no arrow at the top of where the header window should be,
and Yes, I can see header info when viewing SOURCE.

At Mozilla HELP it told me I should be able to bring up the Profile
Manager and create a new Profile. I double click the Tbird icon
while holding down the Option key, but all that accomplishes is that
