MPAA force the same standards on MS as on Apple. The reason you heard about
vista and DRM is because MS wants the hardware windows runs on to be
compliant to the MPAA standards so that their customers can play back 1080p
on their televisions. The DRM built in between blu-ray and the motherboard
to the video card and out HDMI to the monitor is not MS's doing. So the
statement 'DRM is put there as the only way to get content owners to
participate' applies in this case to MS...but again Tom puts a sinister bent
on the MS side, and happy angel feet for Apple. Call me when Apple finally
gets BR support on their hardware...rumors say 2010.

Nope, when Apple screws up I spear them just the same. It only looks like

Apple has been advocating against DRM for many years. Often that DRM is
put there as the only way to get content owners to participate. In
contrast MS has been pushing DRM for years and even made fundamental
changes to Vista to keep computer owners locked out of their own
computers. They have been a bit of a quisling, taking money from

That was very useful information that I had missed. I'm very supportive
of MS changing their ways. Unfortunately they seem to have made the
information public as they were also announcing that they were abandoning
the format.

>My attempt to check "the facts" reflects well on me or at least I hope so.

Very much appreciated. Facts are especially appreciated when they are
true.

I suppose these things are for you to figure out. Being a linux user what
MS spreads is probably of little consequence to you, as for Tom, you'll get
to know him over time.

Re: [CGUYS] Capturing a video

2009-04-14 Thread Paul Cannon
I admit I have little to no experience with Apple products.
The one home computer that I have Vista pre-installed on works well and I have
no complaints.
I was lazy and bought that HP system, well I lied I do have one complaint the
amount of trialware and other pre-installed s/w took me a
significant amount of time to remove.

I primarily use Fedora at home and RHEL at work; so I consider myself in the
camp "whatever tool works".

I prefer open formats and specifications but I am a realist.
Even Apple has done things that make me scratch my head, e.g. making it
"harder" to download/save a movie trailer.

I found the last few weeks of computerguys discussion, the whole
netbook/macbook/laptop discussion was amusing to me since I doubt I would ever
own such a device out of fear of dropping it. Perhaps this fear is misplaced...

I was not trying to be critical of you, just replying factually that MS
released the protocol information which you should be applauding (in my
opinion).
My attempt to check "the facts" reflects well on me or at least I hope so.
As a Linux user, I probably break a few laws daily at home - playing purchased
DVD's or playing mp3's ripped from 20 yr. old cd's.
I am willing to take that risk.

Hardly. I'm consistently a good product advocate. Our Microsoft minders
want to change the subject and attack the messenger.

I would be no less critical of attempts to break Apple's DRM, though
Apple seems to be phasing it out -- even removing activation checks from

Um Tom, I understand that you are Mac Advocate.

Please see
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc251059.aspx

They have released the protocol.

Please read
http://sdp.ppona.com/
So what is MMS all about?
MMS or ' Microsoft Media Server ' protocol is Microsoft's proprietary network
streaming protocol. Microsoft never released a specification to describe how
MMS actually works (until 2008), yet it is extensively used by their Microsoft
media player software. MMS protocol can be used on top of TCP and UDP transport
protocols over any network medium. Its primary use is to stream live or
prerecorded audio and video content to your computer without any need to
download a file before playing. Microsoft has now stopped using MMS in its
newer software like Streaming server 2008 and Media player v11."

Re: [CGUYS] Capturing a video

I'm looking at the video in SeaMonkey on my Mac, using Flip4Mac. For
this kind of video, I simply let it play through, then save the page,
saving the video, since it's the only thing on the page. This is much
easier than saving flash videos.

You could also right-click on the originating link and select Save or
Save Link Target As... Try doing this from webmail if you don't have the
originating page URL. It will work, and it's easy. Don't make an easy
task difficult by assuming that it will be hard to do.

Re: [CGUYS] Capturing a video

2009-04-14 Thread Paul Cannon
Well there are google links that show you how to do it with VLC.
http://forum.videohelp.com/topic316907.html

I googled this but I have never used it
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/web_video_capture.html
So I have no idea if the product works.

I was able to capture the stream in linux using
http://savannah.nongnu.org/projects/mimms/

The url you posted points to a .asf file
which then points to
"http://boss.streamos.com/wmedia/tbn/behindthescenes/2009_1_26_300k.wvx";

the url
in the file
"mms://sos1557-1-wm.edgestreams.net/behindthescenes/.uid.McMCAQBH1t2ysQ2ptAa134f114d2cc1447dbd59b646a4dabee.2009_1_26_300k.wmv?auth=caEanbUbZdYaebLamb.b7aEaObycEbnb9dK-bj5hUU-eS-EDGokyrwtzHxqswo&aifp=0001"

in my case contains some sort of login which will allow you to stream it for a
certain amount of time.
I was then able to use mimms to capture the stream - it seems to be around 68
Mb or so.

Good luck!

[CGUYS] Capturing a video

2009-04-14 Thread Christopher Range

I am trying to capture a video that, is not on MySpace, Google or, YouTube.

Is there a freeware version that will allow me to do that?

The video is at this link:
http://tbn.org/watch/files/index.php?file=2009_1_26_300k.wmv&show=92

It will automatically start Windows Media Player to view the video and,
the video is 30mins. long.

RSVP ASAP
