I need to be able to burn DVD's from the program (like iDVD does). Does FCE not
have this feature? & if not, can iDVD be used with FCE files? tia.

When you finish your movie, save it as DV, or it can be a compressed
.mov. I use Roxio Toast to burn DVDs. It can do video DVDs, including
menus and scene selection--if you've added markers in the original. In
the sidebar, choose Video --> DVD Video, and select Options at bottom
for setup choices. Drag and drop the video onto the window and continue
from there. Use any picture or photo for a background in the menu. You
may have to read the help files for this, or ask the list.

Just to distinguish, Final Cut Express HD will do
most of what everyone needs with the same interface as
the Pro package at a fraction of the price. If you end up
with the full Final Cut Suite, however, You get the DVD Studio Pro app
which is nice if your deliverables are going to DVD... yet
another bunch of things to figure out.

Apple has 3 video applications for the Mac. iMovie, Final Cut Express,
and Final Cut Pro, essentially small, medium, and large. You may find
that the iLife suite, which contains both iMovie and GarageBand (a great
tool for audio editing), is all you need. That would save you some money.
As your interest and needs grow you can move up to FCE. If you move to
Hollywood you can get FCP.

Can I get some feedback on which of these 2 people would recommend?
I'm adding Videographer to my skill-sets (like I needed another one!). tia.

Final Cut beats Premiere hands down. Its faster, has excellent tools and
plugins, is more intuitive [if you can ever call such a complicated
program intuitive]. I think the Premiere doesn't have a Mac version.
Avid Cinema does.

I've used all of those, but when I bought the software myself, I bought
Final Cut Express. It does everything I need, including some high-end
features and is a solid program. If you want to try the Avid software,
there's a free demo version, but nothing is as good on the Mac as Final
Cut, either version. For Windows consider Avid XPress. I never liked
Premiere from the very first version to the last for the Mac, and I
don't like the Windows version either.

Try them all and make your choice. I think there are trial versions. You
can look at Final Cut at an Apple Store.

the new format on HD consumer video cams is AVCHD. does that influence the
choice? my wife's new camera, which has not yet arrived, is in that format.
She has a new iMac 2.4.

What would you be using this skil-set for? Is is basic editing or
extensive post production? And it might depend upon which format
computer you're using. What will be your material source? High def or
standard def?

FCP is your only real choice if you're on a Mac. On the PC I'd
recommend Sony's Vegas for most people. I've used Premiere and it's
just... obtuse. And a steeper learning curve than Vegas (PC).
