Re: [CGUYS] Mini Stereo? [Was: Request recommendation for computer speakers

2009-04-06 Thread Eric S. Sande
Has anyone seen a good audiophile-grade "mini stereo"?

Sure. The Meridian F-80 has gotten good reviews.

If that's too stratospheric, Tivoli Audio makes the "Music
System," which I wouldn't exactly call "audiophile" but like
all their Henry Kloss derived products is very nicely executed
and costs about 1/3 of the Meridian.

Neither of these are going to touch a true audiophile system,
they fall onto a category I'd describe as table radios with CD
capabilites.

I could make some recommendations if you'll email me a
budget. Presumably you already have a computer with an
optical TOSLINK port.

I have a 20 yr old JVC mini-stereo that is also losing some functions.
and I agree ... most of the new mini-stereo look like transformer robots
to me.

I see few smaller units here and there for the kitchen etc that look
decent enough but nothing very exciting.
I guess the Bose mini-stereo might be the exception along with Bang
Olufsen etc

But if I already have an audiophile-grade "mini stereo" in my office I
might as well use it and not clutter the place up with more speakers. For
others, getting a "mini stereo" may be a good move as it adds
capabilities along with the speakers. I really don't want to be playing
CDs via my computer's optical drive.

20 years old and has lost some functions. When I went shopping for a
replacement all I saw was big and ugly units that looked more like boom
boxes.

I have a Yamaha YST-R7.

Its smaller, and Sony usually has good quality sound. You won't be
using it at a party but it should provide quality sound loud enough for
an office environment.
