With Avast you can do a boot level scan which can catch most any stuff.

Did the computer run slow with AVG just running or did the computer
run slow while AVG was scanning? AVG shouldn't affect computer speed
adversely with just the program running. While AVG is scanning, the
amount of processing power consumed can be adjusted to suit your
needs by setting Scan Process Priority.

Avast is free and has been recommended by the list, so you might
want to give that a try.

When you say that "AVG was no less a mess", does that mean it was
unable to scan the computer either, or are you talking about
something else? I don't know much about Norton and its errors, but if
you're unable to run virus scans with either Norton or AVG, my first
thought is that it's a virus already in the computer preventing it.
Did you try Avast, or perhaps any other online scans?

AVG made it run very slow, even for a PIII-933.

As for online virus scans, Kapersky wanted me to buy the program, just
to see the results. I am running Bit Defender but, I don't have much
hope that, it won't say the same thing about, having to buy the
program, to see the results.

When I try to do a scan, I get an error. The error is '3038, 104'.
That leads me to the Symantec Technical Support Knowledge Base where,
I have two choices. Either 'Installation Errors' or, 'Other Errors'.
Then it tells me to download the Norton Removal Tool followed by,
downloading Norton SystemWorks.

I un-install NSW and, re-install it. But I keep having problems
scanning because, I keep getting the same error code.

I did try to use AVG but, it was no less a mess.

Any ideas as to why NSW keeps giving the same error code?

I suggest going to www.ubcd4win.com to get the fixings for a boot CD
(that's "disc" withe "c") with several antivirus and anti spyware
programs. Use it to build a disk image and update to the latest
definition files. Then burn a boot CD.

Testing your computer while booted from an OS on the CD allows for better
testing because the malware you are searching for won't be running so
can't use various tricks to hide.

Pardon the additional post. If you decide to uninstall NSW, be sure to
visit their website and get the most current uninstaller. You can be in
a world of hurt otherwise.

Take a look at Trend Micro, or AVG for leaner, and in my experience

I would second Matthew's suggestion. I have used trend Micro at the

I am much happier having dumped Norton and McAffee.

Norton will start without any problem. It is when I run LiveUpdate,
that the problem occurs. It seemingly downloads the updates. That is
until, it gives me a error message with a code number and a link. I
can't remember the code number right now, but, when clicking on it, it
