RAID has similar problems. Earlier this week I was having a
conversation with a network engineer for a large bank. His full-time
responsibility is managing servers. He readily admitted that the most
common problem he encounters these days is failures of the raid
controller. When that happens you have to replace with an equivalent
controller. If you can't none of the data on the drives will be
accessible.

Some people have made a business out of stocking old RAID controllers
and selling them for big bucks.

The comments are more interesting then the article.

[CGUYS] RAID's days may be numbered.

2009-09-18 Thread Art Clemons
I stayed out of the last fight over RAID. I have no great love for it,
and have had more than one oops with RAID, but I also know that lots of
folks especially those in IT desire it. Apparently it's not just those
using Reiserfs who suddenly find that an Array has to be rebuilt or that
something actually appears not to have been written when it should have
been. I don't use RAID at home, instead relying on backups on external
drives which I occasionally test by taking a blank drive and seeing if I
can restore everything on that drive. Being semi-paranoid, I also
regularly back up data and pictures on DVDs. So far I haven't lost
anything with this going on but I know that eventually something will go
wrong.
