You can also move the ethernet to the lower floor
with a pair of powerline ethernet adapters. The
model i use has RJ-45 ethernet on both ends, but
there are versions that have cat 5 on one end
and wireless on the other end. Hook one unit
up to the router and for the other, wherever you
have a power outlet, you have a network connection.

That's kinda what I was thinking. I'm going to
 do some more
 research. Thank you.

Now that you bring that up, I do recall something about that. The guy I do
some work for had bought probably 20 of the buffalo before the court order
because they worked well with the ddwrt. That's also why they most likely
went up in price by about 20 bux.

Buffalo is currently prohibited from selling in or exporting to the
US any new routers other than those already in the inventory of their
dealers. They are still available, and they look like really good
 units.

Buffalo is having legal patent issues, and the courts have placed
limitations on their ability to market their products here until the
 issue is settled.

[CGUYS] Wireless antenna question

2007-10-28 Thread Steve Rigby
I would like to be able to access a couple of nearby public wireless
systems. My computer is located on the ground floor of my home, and I
cannot get a good enough signal at that location. However, on my upper
floor, or in the attic, with a directional antenna, I can get a signal
that is robust enough to use.

Is there a way for me to be able to locate an antenna upstairs, and
have its received signal wirelessly transmitted to my computer located
on the lower floor? I do not want to have to run ethernet cables up
there, nor would a long run of antenna cable from an external wireless
antenna be viable due to signal losses incurred over such a distance.

Re: [CGUYS] Wireless antenna question

2007-10-28 Thread Tom Piwowar
Is there a way for me to be able to locate an antenna upstairs, and

on the lower floor?

I have not looked into this myself, but I have read that this is a common
problem with municipal WiFi. Their signal is okay outside, but too weak
indoors. Their standard solution is to tell citizens to put a relay box
in the window. So I would start by looking up what these systems
recommend. This will probably be inexpensive.

With a little luck and a minimum of equipment you may be able to locate a
WiFi router upstairs that can be set to join that free network. Then your
computer downstairs will hopefully be in range of your upstairs WiFi
router.

Or something like that.
