I've never replaced an iPod battery, but in general I like this company, and I think the NuPower batteries are very good. They have PDFs or videos to show you how. Other vendors may have kits as low as $15. My son changed the battery in his gen 1 iPod, said it was very easy, much easier than replacing the FW port that loosened from carrying it by the cable.
