Well, there's one file that's called by the shortcut, but the folder has
5 different .mdb files in it.

opening the older files from within Access instead of from Explorer.
Yes, it makes no sense. Anyway, it seems from your description you
don't have this problem. Only two things I can suggest therefore that
you may already have tried. First, when you open the file using the old

system, try hitting the function key ( F11) to see if it will bring up
hidden tables, and possible something from which the export command will

work. But even you cannot export directly see if you can open the table

and copy the data over directly by hitting ctl-a (select all) ctl-c
(copy) and then pasting (ctl-v) into a new access table in a new
database. Probably you've tried that but just in case . . .

I know how frustrating that kind of problem can be so best of luck to
you.

That's never been a problem. I sort of wish it was *the* problem since
that'd be easy to get around.

I'm not trying nor is it my desire to upgrade or modify this. I just
want to get it to run under Windows XP instead of Windows 2000.

Maybe in some parlance, that's the definition of 'modify' but I'm not
looking at it that way.

working

Re: [CGUYS] MS access problem

2008-10-03 Thread Michael Drabick

Larry,

Suggestion 1)
Have you tried putting copies of the files from the old computer on the
new computer using the identical paths. This could solve your
permissions problem, as the program is searching for a file that it
can't find because it is in the wrong path.

"C:\Incident.Ora\SYSTEM.MDA"
"C:\Incident.Ora\Incident.mdb"

"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Microsoft Access
Runtime\msaccess.exe" /runtime /wrkgrp "C:\Incident.Ora\SYSTEM.MDA"
"C:\Incident.Ora\Incident.mdb"

Suggestion 2)
Older versions of Access had very poor security, One need only import
the database files into an existing file and it would strip the security
out of the data, and let you work with the data in the new database.
Also I have MS Office 2000 Premium & Professional, and MS Office 97
Professional Edition(SP1&2 disks).

I believe that opening a runtime application will be successful if the
underlying code of the runtime application is compatible with the version of
access trying to open it. But the best chance I believe is to open the latest
version of access possible and then to point to the mdb file target.
Let us know how it works out.

Re: [CGUYS] MS Access problem

2008-10-02 Thread Howard Wall
Have you tried running the application on a PC without ANY version of
Office installed? If the application runs w/o Office installed try
running the application after installing all MS Office applications
EXCEPT MS Access. If that works then you can either:

1. Leave the system set up without MS Access installed. This works if
your customer doesn't need MS Access for any other application.

2. See if there is some way to install/configure MS Access so it
doesn't try to automatically upgrade existing databases.

If neither of these solutions are available then your customer has a
serious problem because it sounds like the vendor set up the database
application with specific user level permissions. This means you have
to know the correct administrative user id and password for the specific
database if you want to upgrade/modify the application. Since it
doesn't sound like the vendor provided this information to your customer
as part of delivering the system then your customer is probably out of
luck.

Sending you the file is an interesting idea, but the file has

Nope. The mdb isn't corrupted. I can take the file on his new system,

I think the error is a bit of a red herring.

When you say "Open the shortcut" do you mean double clicking it? If so,
yes I am. If I just go into MS Access 2007 (or Access 2000), and try to
open the .mdb, I get the same error - the one about not having necessary
permissions.

I think one reason I can't just open the .mdb by itself is I need to do
something with the .mdw file too.

This was (from what I can tell) originally sent out with Access Runtime
so recipients of the program didn't have to have Access installed.

Perhaps the mdb is corrupted, but that error sounds like a red
herring. You sure you weren't trying to open the shortcut?

I just opened one of our old .mdb's in Access 2007 with no trouble.
But oddly, now it shows a modified date of today, even though I didn't
save or change anything.

Re: [CGUYS] MS Access problem

2008-10-01 Thread Larry Sacks
Maybe. I just need to find someone with Office 2003.

Does the old shortcut give anything useful?

Microsoft Access Runtime\msaccess.exe" /runtime /wrkgrp
"C:\Incident.Ora\SYSTEM.MDA" "C:\Incident.Ora\Incident.mdb"

Could the .MDA file be related to the problem?

Dumb question. Can he send it to someone with Office 2003 and have
them attempt to open and than save in the 03 format and then try and
open in 07?

Re: [CGUYS] MS Access problem

2008-10-01 Thread Tony B
Perhaps the mdb is corrupted, but that error sounds like a red
herring. You sure you weren't trying to open the shortcut?

I just opened one of our old .mdb's in Access 2007 with no trouble.
But oddly, now it shows a modified date of today, even though I didn't
save or change anything.

You should have no trouble opening the old .mdb directly within
Office2007. I don't even think they changed the .mdb format. Once you
have it opened you can make a new shortcut to it.

Just trash the old shortcut. As you've discovered, they're not normal
Windows shortcuts.
