Re: [CGUYS] USB Flash drive

it sounds like it should work

keep us posted on how it goes.

On 5/4/07, Stewart A. Marshall <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

I have been given a chore.

The JROTC department at the local high school has a USB flash
drive. Somehow the end (Connector) of the Flash drive has been
broken off, and they need to recover the contents of the flash drive.

What I have considered doing is opening the Flash Drive, and getting
a USB cable, cutting off the B end of it, and soldering the wires
directly to the Flash drive to use the A end of the cable to connect
it to a computer and transfer the contents of it to a Computer and
burn a CD of it.

Once that is done, the whole works can be trashed. They will then
have the contents, buy a new flash drive and be instructed to BACK IT
UP, periodically.

I am not looking for discussion of the permanence of a flash drive or
stuff like this. Just is my idea feasible or is their an easier way.

Yes, this would work. However, if you are asking such a question you
probably do not have the soldering skill to do the job without damaging
the the PCB.

If the connector completely broken off? If you still have even a little
bit of the 4 metal contacts in place you might be able to jam it into a
USB socket. The outside metal seath is not required.

My soldering skills are not as good as they used to be (did a lot of
electrical hobby work years ago)

My biggest problem is getting the proper glasses so I can see the boards!

However I have worked on PCB's before. I just have not opened this
one up yet, and the connector is complete yanked out of it. That was
my question.

I would suggest getting some fine alligator clips and soldering/
attaching those to a USB cable. and clipping the cable to the remnants
of your USB drive. That way you aren't depending too highly on your
soldering expertise and risking/ stressing the all important drive any
further than it is already...

Re: [CGUYS] USB Flash drive

2007-05-04 Thread Rev. Stewart Marshall

I finally had a chance to take the flash drive apart.

The connector was literally taken off the board.

I might be able to solder the contacts, connector back on to the
board itself and get it to work. I will sit down when I have the
time to do this and not feel rushed.

Otherwise I will solder the contacts back onto the board and connect
alligator clips to them (soldered to the cable.)

Al there is on the board are the solder points.

I do have a fine tip soldering iron to do some of this work.

Would that it be so easy.

This one pulled the contacts straight off the PCB and all that is
left is spots where the contacts were soldered.

I have salvaged all the contacts, so will attempt to solder them back
on (after having soldered the wires to them) and connect it, get the
data off of it, and then put it away (I hate to throw things, my wife

Put all the data on a new card, plus burn a CD of the data.

Charge as much as I can get away with ethically and remind them once

I do not plan on soldering directly. The contacts can be heated and
solder melted on them then placed on the board.

The factories use mechanical solder machines that use heat, but their
process is so fast and automated they bond fast.

I do not want the board/chip heating.

Re: [CGUYS] USB Flash drive

2007-05-06 Thread Rev. Stewart Marshall

Well I got a chance to try out my fix to transfer the data.

IT WORKED!

I bought a cheap USB HUB at Walmart. Took the cover off, and snipped
off the wires (saved me from having to cut a perfectly good cord,
plus price was the same)

Took the reinforced end off, and peeled back the cover of the wire.
Bought some longer Steel stick pins (I had thought of using the
original contacts, but too short and almost impossible to solder back on!)

Bent different pins at different angles so that they would not
touch! (after of course tracing and figuring out which color went
where.) Had to use my hemostats to attach one wire as I could not
get a stick pin to solder at one contact point.)

Had wife hold memory card, attached the cord to a USB extension cord
and immediately (well almost) it started to install the memory card.

Had one glitch and had to start over. (had to be very still) Got
every thing transferred.

As soon as it was done, I had wife detach cord, and then allowed
myself breath!

Now it was simple to transfer it to a new memory stick and bagged the old one.

$20.00 for a new memory stick and whatever I can get out of him for
time, trouble and materials. (For what they charge for drive
recovery My price will seem low.)

Would I want to do it again NO! My fingers are not as steady as they
used to be, and I do not have a proper work bench with the proper
light. (I need one of those magnifying lights! with clips!)

Well I got a chance to try out my fix to transfer the data.

IT WORKED!

Congratulations, you are promoted to hacker first class :-).

Seriously, that was well executed.

What was on the drive? Just curious.

Re: [CGUYS] USB Flash drive

2007-05-07 Thread Rev. Stewart Marshall

The flash drive is from the JROTC department at my sons High School.

All their documents (User created) plus older documents were kept on
this. Also a Outlook mailbox file, Power Point files, Excel files
etc. Favorites list stuff like this. I assume they use the Flash
drive instead of floppies. (Military is funny this way.)

When I was in the National Guard they saved all their documents to
floppies so that they could move from computer to computer. It also
allowed them to be highly susceptible to infections from multiple
floppy users. I remember one AT period when I had to download an
anti-virus program via modem (no high speed yet) and install it on
their system and mine because soldiers had transferred a virus via floppies.

This little incident taught me a couple of things.

My hands are not as steady as they used to be. I need a hobby stand
with clips and a magnifying glass. The Cold Heat solder tool is a
great concept and works fantastically (allows soldering without a lot
of heat generation.)

I don't charge nearly enough! :-)

Neither are mine. I'm going to look at that Cold Heat system.

Well I got a chance to try out my fix to transfer the data.

IT WORKED!

I bought a cheap USB HUB at Walmart. Took the cover off, and snipped off
the wires (saved me from having to cut a perfectly good cord, plus price
was the same)

Took the reinforced end off, and peeled back the cover of the wire. Bought
some longer Steel stick pins (I had thought of using the original
contacts, but too short and almost impossible to solder back on!)

Bent different pins at different angles so that they would not touch!
(after of course tracing and figuring out which color went where.) Had to
use my hemostats to attach one wire as I could not get a stick pin to
solder at one contact point.)

Had wife hold memory card, attached the cord to a USB extension cord and
immediately (well almost) it started to install the memory card.

Had one glitch and had to start over. (had to be very still) Got every
thing transferred.

As soon as it was done, I had wife detach cord, and then allowed myself
breath!

Now it was simple to transfer it to a new memory stick and bagged the old
one.

$20.00 for a new memory stick and whatever I can get out of him for time,
trouble and materials. (For what they charge for drive recovery My price
will seem low.)

Would I want to do it again NO! My fingers are not as steady as they used
to be, and I do not have a proper work bench with the proper light. (I
need one of those magnifying lights! with clips!)

Re: [CGUYS] USB Flash drive

2007-05-09 Thread Rev. Stewart Marshall
Oh please do underestimate me. There are plenty of things that have
not worked that I attempted.

I am not sure how this thing works, but it is a little quirky. You
must have contact with the item being soldered in order for it to heat!

I read a review, done by MSNBC I think, in which an audiophile (That
means anyone who spends more than I do on audio Equipment) gave it
good reviews.

Whatever this one was OK I would not want to do it full time. Labor intensive!
