2024-05-11 Thread Lissa Bengtson via Contra Callers
A secret contra/ECD dance that can't be shared. That's too bad. Maybe the
author could share it?

Patricia. our local dancers do "The Source" which is a dance I learned at
Pourparler (when it was in Vermont before the most recent Vermont PP.) If
I recall correctly it's a Navajo dance but I learned it to a Loreena
McKennit rendition of the tune "The Mummer's Dance." We've done it at a
couple of folk dance memorial services. Quite spiritual. A circle dance
though, not a contra.

2024-05-02 Thread Emily Addison via Contra Callers
Hi David, Jonathan, and Seth,

Thanks so much for jumping in on this question about medleys and giving me
some ideas to chew on! I've danced some medleys but not since before the
pandemic and as mentioned, have never tried calling one. I definitely want
it to be a success no flops! Great point about having all the
choreography be familiar and the dances not be a challenge. That was on
my radar. Hadn't thought about putting a dance from earlier in the
evening in - cool idea Seth!

Thank you :)

Hi Colin,

Oh my goodness! Your website is AMAZING!
Pre-pandemic I called a few squares but since then, I've fallen in love
with calling them. I'm also a sucker for history, and have done a bit of
reading of the Northern Junket. I've dreamed of a website like yours that
would have the squares from NJ together. This is S great!
What a wonderful way to bring part of that history forward in an accessible
way. :)

2022-12-04 Thread Claire Takemori via Contra Callers
Hi Joe,
You can contact Emily Rush, who shares her Google drive link with folks to use
for calling techno contras.

I’ve called a techno contra recently using a couple of her tunes as well as
slowing down the BPM on some EDM music I found online (Spotify, Apple Music,
etc)
There are amazing DJs who have made some fun dance mixes and many of them are
square tunes. I counted them out to be sure for mine.

I also got some tunes from Caller DJ Noah Grunzweig in Portland OR. And a
recording from a zoom techno contra that M’Gilvry Allen did for our Zoom NYE
2020.

Good luck!

[Callers] Re: Contra Callers Digest, Vol 93, Issue 3 Tune for Handshake Contra

2022-03-25 Thread David J. Notman via Contra Callers
I'm trying to understand exactly what you want.  Some "beats" look to be
longer than others in your outline.  In the following abc-notation style
text score, "|" indicates a measure boundry, "s" indicates hand shaking
and "x" indicates other notes/actions.  Each note is followed by a
length - 1=quarter note, 2=half note, 4=whole note.

Were you thinking of something like this:

s1 s1 s2 | s1 s1 s2 | x4 | x4 | x1 x1 x1 x1 |

Contra tunes are typically written in 2/2 time - two beats per measure.
In the first measure above, "s1 s1" consumes one beat, and "s2" is the
second beat.

What's the rest of the dance?

I would find a danceable tune and modify the dance to fit the tune. Or you
can think of a song or create words for the dancers to say and do the
dance

without music. Susan

Hi all,

There's a family dance called "Revive the High Five" that is listed in
The Caller's Box as being by Luke Donforth, but at some point I heard
that Luke said it wasn't his composition. Can anyone shed light on
this? I'd like to give credit where it's due, and it's a great dance.

2021-08-04 Thread Mary Collins via Contra Callers
I have to concur with Ken not calling frequently compounds for me a brain
glitch that precludes me from memorization. Cannot remember phone numbers
unless repeated 1,000 of times. Cell phone have escaberated this
exponentially.

Practice of course helps, but I honestly do not have the amount of time to
practice this much! I do, however, recognize a dance once walked through
regardless of not connecting moves with title. I envy those wonderful
callers that rarely if ever use a card.

[Callers] Re: Contra Callers Digest, Vol 87, Issue 1

2021-08-04 Thread Ken Panton via Contra Callers
Hi Tom,

Two responses to share.

Last point first re gibberish Shared Weight emails. If you are referring to
summary emails filled with repetitive, annoying unparseable HTML text, I was
seeing the same. A couple of days ago I went to the Shared Weight FAQs and I
refer you to FAQ #5 subsection #6 re setting to MIME. I think it solved it for
me.

Other response relates to memorization of dances though I'm not sure if I've
understood your remarks correctly.

I would love to have 100 dances, or more, tucked away in my noggan for
immediate recall. The benefits appear obvious. Do remember, however, that while
some callers are calling every week, possibly more than once a week, others of
us -- if we're lucky -- call, perhaps, once a month (and maybe just a dance or
two through the evening). One of those realities facilitates memorization; the
other, not so much.

For myself, I do try to augment my practicing; whenever I'm listening to my
contra playlist MP3s I'll usually run one of my few memorized dances through my
mind. Chuck the Budgie is pretty engrained as a result! 🙂

I think you’re correct Sue, two different parts of the brain, and two totally
different ways of experiencing the evening.

I can walk into a dance and tell if the caller is using a card or not. In my
opinion calling a well memorized dance is far more natural.

I have to tell you a short story of how my memory saved the day when I called
my 6th English dance. A women from the local senior center brought about 12 of
her dancers (still beginners) to our dance which is usually all experienced.
She did this without warning me ahead of time.

I came to the dance without any cards or a written program. It took me about
two minutes to jot down a revised program, all from memory. The evening went
well. Calling from memory is extremely beneficial to callers, there’s no
question in my mind.

We discussed this topic maybe 10 or 15 years ago. I was impressed that one
person said she would try it. I’m curious why some of you haven’t given it a
go.

Lastly it happens that some of your messages are scrambled so I can’t read
them. Any ideas why? Tony, can you send your message to me off list?

Hi Bob,

I get this list once a day in digest form, so you might already have this
answer.

The triplet is by Linda Leslie, and she just called it Corner Triplet. It’s
also mine (called David’s Triplet #1.5), but Linda wrote it first.

I went to the NFO Exploring the Return to Live Events session on Wednesday and
the NFO insurance person and the CDSS insurance person both said their policies
would not include COVID-19 coverage.

Hi Linda,

Thank you for sending along this example. It’s very useful. I will see what
can be done about it.

I know there was a post about it, but I missed it/deleted it. I very much need
