I would suggest adding -J, allowing MS Windows (helping many Newbies?) to
browse the CD with long file names shown. This should also help with
browsing the HTML FAQ files from Windows (the 8.3 filenames break the HTML
 links in the docs.)

Yeah sure it looks nice, but it screwed up the installer on some
machines. which is why we quit doing it.

And as long as I am on it, some "ease of use" suggestions:

The text files in /dosutils should be named *.TXT. Linux won't care and it's
easier to open and read the text files from Windows (just click on them
rather than right click, then OPEN WITH . . .)

Include some help files in /dosutils (newbies don't know to look in /docs)
that address common questions of Windows users; perhaps a small HTML FAQ for
Windows converts. I'll volunteer to do the docs if you need..

With new converts every day, we should do more to make the transition
smoother and add value to the Mandrake distro.

[Cooker] First looks on 7.0... WOW!

1999-12-24 Thread Jean-Michel Dault

I installed oxygen on an Intel 440BX server board. This has all the
peripherals onboard.

I was amazed how easy everything went. Did an FTP install in less than 20
minutes. It detected my Symbios SCSI card, Intel 82557 network card, and
the CLGD5480 video card. With 6.1, I had to tweak X settings, because I
had garbage on my monitor, screen was not centered, etc. With 7.0, I did
not set anything! The GUI install is the best of its class.

I was showing 6.1 to a big customer last week, he liked it, but I had
negative comments about having to mount/umount the CD all the time, not
being able to change the X resolution easily, and keyboard mpping problems
(French Canadian keyboard). Everything is fixed in Oxygen! I can't believe
it!

Right now, I am burning the ISO image, and I will install it later on an
IBM Thinkpad, where I pulled my hair configuring X and soundcard.

[Cooker] 2 more tests with Oxygen

1999-12-24 Thread Jean-Michel Dault

Hi again,

I did an installation on another machine, plus an upgrade on an IBM
Thinkpad. Here are the results.

It's Christmas, so I gotta leave for a few days. I'll show Linux to Mom,
and see if it's user friendly enough for her ;-)

Install using gi_hd on a PIII Clone. Did an expert installation,
everything went fine. When I reboot, I have several surprises:
- Strange bug: it booted with kernel 2.2.13-1mdklinus. I think the gi_hd
image has not been updated yet.
- SIS 6326 AGP (8 megs) was detected and configured. But there were many
distortions on graphics, until I put Option "noaccel" in the config file.
I managed to get a good quality in 1024x768 in 24 bits. That's not bad at
all, considering that under M6.1, it was impossible to get anything out of
this card.
- Adaptec 7980 detected and configured automatically
- Yamaha YMF724 soundcard not supported (sndconfig message)

Upgrade with Oxygen ISO on a Thinkpad 390.
- Kudzu detected my NeoMagic MagicMedia256AV. However, the driver only
seems to support 8-bit audio.
- XFree was perfectly configured

Merry Christmas to all! =)

It recognized the BeOS on my system, but assigned it the grey color.

Booting to BeOS was not avilable as a LILO option, but not difficult to set
up by hand although I use the BeOS bootman.

Yeah, I took the recommended route for my review (I'd be using expert for

Well, as it stands right now, it overwrites the existing lilo. Would be
nice to be prompted to do so if it finds an existing lilo, but I can
understand how "merging" the two would be a little difficult...

[Cooker] new version and iso

1999-12-24 Thread Pixel

I've just made a new iso. It fixes a few things:

- install-boot logo: switch to text for cards not able to output strings in
video mode (S3virge, i740)

- cyrillic fonts displayed at install

- nicer kdm (cute icons for users added by default)

- new kernel

- new XFree86 (patch for i810 and GeForce added)

- more i18n

- other things i can't remember

happy testing and merry christmas, cu Pixel.

PS: the iso has just been made and should the mirrors soon...

[Cooker] Last Major Problem with Oxygen

Last problem I have is I can't use X with anyone besides root. I see the
message "localhost being added to access control list" when hit
Ctrl-Alt-Backspace. Chmouel had me try this last night:
-$ echo "xhost +localhost" ~/.xinitrc
 -$ echo "xterm" ~/.xinitrc
 -$ xinit
and it did give me a xterm.
But he must of went to sleep last night before he could finish helping.

Anyone else have any Ideas?
