Yes, OK.

Yes, OK. I like your xpp dialog box.

(this could surround a bug in PostScript generation by Acrobat or in
 PostScript rendering by GhostScript).

Acroread Print gives a title=Printer, Message=Printing Error dialog
box, without giving any clue what the error was (IMHO, sufficient
cause for programmer summary dismisal).

Acroread Page Setup correct at A4, but the page size did not alter
from 8.5 x 11 inches, which is US letter size. USA locale
parochialism wins again!PS Level 2 selected by default.

Manually changing page size to 8.27 x 11.69 inches and attempting the

Not tried. What do you mean "In Acrobat reader"?

 - Printed to a file with the Acrobat Reader and checked the PostScript

Not tried. Konqueror and ps pdf viewer display the file directly
just fine, but won't print it (same symptoms as Konqueror below,
except Environment Variable now shows "PRINTER").

[Cooker] Unofficial KDE update rpm's - Updated

2000-11-16 Thread Christopher Molnar

Hello,

I have created a set of KDE 2.0 rpm's that include the latest KDE CVS fixes.
These are un-official because they have not gone through testing and
definatly have not gone through the regular release cycle. In other words, if
it breaks don't blame Mandrake. If it works and looks better, and is an
improvement send a nice note to my boss :-)

You can find these RPM's at:

ftp://nebsllc.com/pub/KDE_UPDATE

also will be available at any ftp.kde.org mirror once they make it through
the distribution.

You will need to install libical (in the same directory) and pilot-link from
your 7.2 CD's in order to install kdepim.

If you choose to use them you do so at your own risk. Again, don't blame me
if anything breaks! Please report all bugs to the kde team using Help --
Report Bugs from any KDE application.

They are meant for a Mandrake 7.2 system. They will NOT run on the current
cooker platform, but that's OK I updated those last night as well.

If your menus and icons look messed up after installing these rpm's exit KDE,
and as root run "update-menus" give it a few minutes and restart kde.

To those of you "cooker's" that tested them - THANKS! I have updated kdegames
and a few of the other packages as well - notice the x.1mdk on the version
numbers. There was a whole bunch of Java fixes checked in yesterday and these
include these fixes. You Java experts may want to look at them.

[Cooker] Success with NVidia feedback [ NVidia driver for Linux/XFree86 ]

2000-11-16 Thread Vadim Plessky

Hello everybody,

I know that's not the answer all we are waiting for [open-sourced Nvidia
driver], but it's very good indication that it's possible to get answer from
hardware vendor when you write letter to them (and resend it after one week
later, CC: Marketing, Sales, as I did yesterday ;-).
I still have no answer from ATI (as I mentioned, I have ATI Rage Mobility in
my notebook), that's very bad indicator :-

in short, NVidia driver
-needs 2.4 kernel
-doesn't support TV out
-has SRPMs on the webpage (??, see below)
-HDTV output will be available when TV Out is ready
-has no DVD playback (utility), suggestion to use 3rd party utilities which
are not ready yet

I am rather surprised to hear that:
"MPG compression is also a feature of the video editting cards, and
isn't controlled by our video card"
As far as I know ASUS cards (on NVidia chip) support Video-In, therefor can
be classified as "video editing cards"

Are there any owners of Happauge (i belive that's the spelling) video cards
on list?
PROPOSAL:
~
Let's collect suggestions/questions to NVidia together, and send them all
collected to NVidia. At least now we have contact person.

Vadim

Hi,

We currently do not have Mandrake 7.2 specific RPMS since it came out after
the last release. We do have SRPMs on the webpage that you can use though.
The majority of the SRPM is allready precompiled but there are some parts
that will be compiled on your system. As far as the features, currently the
drivers do not support the TV out. TV in will be handled by your TV card.
I would recomend a 2.4 test kernel for this as it supports the TV cards
better. This support is provided by the linux kernel and is not through our
video card drivers. If the linux support doesnt work for your tv card, you
may want to check with the manufacturer of the tv card. Our drivers do work
with the Video for Linux module though so you can use the capabilities
provided by xfree 4.0.1. Currently there is no legal dvd software for
linux. Intervideo and several companies are working on DVD software for
linux, and that will work with our drivers when its released. The LinDVD
software will provide full screen and windowed mode and will work with our
drivers. MPG compression is also a feature of the video editting cards, and
isn't controlled by our video card. I havent had any experience with this
so Im not sure what support Linux has for it. I know the 2.4 kernel has
some character devices in the kernel options itself for such a beast, but I
have not tried them. HDTV output will be available pretty much the same
time as the tv out. Unfortunately I dont have a time frame yet on those.
Hopefully this answers most of your questions. If you have any more, please
feel free to email us. As far as the video editting goes, I would recomend
checking around and find out what the current 2.4 kernel supports as far as
video editting cards goes. Im not even sure what software is available for
linux currently to do that. Also check into xawtv. I use this for my tv
card at home and work, and this has some good capture signals. This will
allow hdtv in and tv in (depends on which module you buy.) Haupage (I think
thats the spelling) has the best support under linux as far as I can tell,
but you really wanna use the 2.4 kernel. :)

I am running Mandrake Linux 7.2 with XFree86 4.0.1
Would you please point out where I can get Mandrake-specific RPMs.
I would like to take SRPMS and compile myself, as I usally compile most

optimizations. I could not find such packages on Mandrake Cooker, latest,
up-to-date (development) version of Linux Mandrake. Pls cc:

My current configuration details:

XFree86-libs-4.0.1-26mdk
XFree86-xfs-4.0.1-26mdk

I grabbed the KDE update packages this morning (Nov. 16, about 7h UTC).
But I still got the dependencies problem with kgegames (libkdegames.so.1)

I installed all other packages without any problem. The KDE system seems to
work ok.
My feeling is that the system has become a little bit faster (but this is
hard to measure on 700Mhz Pentium III). The disign is better than KDE2.0 with
one exeception (to my feeling): the blow-up of the icons in the task bar,
maybe I have to become used to it.

Thanks for the work!

least, on Slackware there were a few moves on that side. However it is
enough to have a kernel with some "new features" to break everything
down. Many people may not be aware of the situation and consequently
fail miserably on compiling their programs.

Sincerly I would strongly recomend not to do the move. Having duplicates

It looks that this problem arises from the kpm program which I use to run??

Until the issues are worked out yes. Right now it's a tradeoff. You
can have bigmem or reiserfs, but not both. I think with most of us on
this list, resierfs is more important than bigmem. How many people here
actually run systems that need bigmem support?

Once the issues are worked out, we can turn bigmem support back on.

How does that sound?

I have created a set of KDE 2.0 rpm's that include the latest KDE CVS

definatly have not gone through the regular release cycle. In other words,
if it breaks don't blame Mandrake. If it works and looks better, and is an
improvement send a nice note to my boss :-)

You can find these RPM's at:

 ftp://nebsllc.com/pub/KDE_UPDATE

also will be available at any ftp.kde.org mirror once they make it through
 the distribution.

You will need to install libical (in the same directory) and pilot-link
from your 7.2 CD's in order to install kdepim.

If your menus and icons look messed up after installing these rpm's exit
KDE, and as root run "update-menus" give it a few minutes and restart kde.

To those of you "cooker's" that tested them - THANKS! I have updated
kdegames and a few of the other packages as well - notice the x.1mdk on the
version numbers. There was a whole bunch of Java fixes checked in yesterday
and these include these fixes. You Java experts may want to look at them.

Well Alsa is really dead. Even the "original" tarball does not work. No

decisevely "initialising" the card forever. I tried some changes to see
what happens and it seems to hang always in one and the same place.
Anyway it is curious that it manages to create the "timer" device before
dying. I'll try some debug later.

On what concerns tvaudio, insmod claims the failure of two dependencies:
lock_kernel unlock_kernel. I couldn't get a hint where these calls
could be located. Even on a older hackkernel, they seem absent.

Hi, all.

Question regarding CUPS printer configuration:

It used to be with printtool that you could select a local printer, like the
LaserJet 1100 for example, and set some of the printer parameters like top
bottom margin. I can't see how to do that now with CUPS. Anybody know how?

Thanks,

It is unclear to me if Voodoo 4/5 are supported by Mandrake 7.2.
If this support was removed due to beta status of drivers, then the method
described on linux.3dfx.com should be used at "users own risks".
Else, what changed in 7.2 compared to 7.2b1 with this regard.

I have a Voodoo 5 and a fresh install of Mandrake 7.2 (SMP kernel).
The above elements are in place (XF4.01, module loaded, proper Glide) but

You're quite right, Ron - I hadn't tried to change the page size - but then
you don't have to. At the bottom of the Print dialog, in PostScript Options,
select "Fit to Page" and it'll do just that - if your printer is A4 as mine
is too, it prints A4 perfectly. That's how acroread works - it doesn't let
you alter the original in any way, while you can view and print as you like.
Cheers,

Yes, thanks, makes some kind of sense.

[Cooker] 7.2 on Dell Laptops - solutions to X problems

2000-11-16 Thread Kevin Maciunas

For information to the Mandrake team :-)

The ATI Rage Mobility P graphics devices on the Dell Inspiron range of
laptops seem to be upset by the X configuration generated by the
installation process. Symptoms are: the system completely freezes
(can't even be ping'd) when the screen is placed in the low power state.

There seems to be two 100% effective workarounds:

(1) Select Xfree 3.3.6 and not V4
(2) Select V4 and then manually edit the config file - comment out the
"option DPMS" line.

Also on these machines the framebuffer kernel does not seem to
inter-operate with either XFree 3 or 4 properly. After leaving the
Xconfiguration during the install process, the framebuffer display is
completely unreadable - it looks like it wraps around on itself. This
is also a problem if you choose to boot with Aurora - when you shut the
machine down you get a hideous flashing screen, likewise if you try the
virtual consoles. This is a problem which still needs a fix!

Thanks to Vadim Plessky, Chmouel Boudjnah and Franco Silvestro for their
helpful and useful suggestions.

/Kevin

Re: [Cooker] 7.2 on Dell Laptops - solutions to X problems

2000-11-16 Thread Terry Nelms

I have MD 7.2 installed on an Inspirion 5000 with the ATI Rage
Mobility P using XF 4. I have had no video problems at all.
If fact, MD was one of the only dists.that I didn't have video
problems with. The only problem I have run into is that I have
a USB mouse attached and sometimes it seems to get locked up.
Usually just unplugging it and plugging it back in will
fix it, but once in a while I'll have to reboot. My notebook
has the ATI with 4MB video RAM. I don't know if you have the
4MB or the upgraded 8MB video. That could be the difference.

Later,
Terry

[Cooker] mozilla-5.0.0-0.M18.4mdk

2000-11-16 Thread Anton Graham

I spent several hours last night trying to rebuild this RPM on my 7.2 box (a
P200). While compilation did complete (with numerous warnings) and an RPM
was generated, subsequent installation of the RPM left me with a Mozilla
that terminates instantly with a segfault. Interestingly, this condition
repairs itself after being run once as root. Perhaps a warning in the
package description that the binary must be run by root before it will
function for others is in order?

This segfault (in mozilla) also caused what appeared to be a crash in Galeon
0.8 (also recompiled on my box), so the difficulty must be somewhere in the
parts of mozilla that Galeon uses.

[Cooker] KDE2 doesnt work in Swedish

2000-11-16 Thread Kenneth Karlsson

I have prevously sent an email about kde and swedish but it seems to
have been lost.
I'll try again.

I have been testing the latest 7.2 and found that if I install using
swedish then Kde hardly works at all.

The min, max and close buttons are missing from windows. Opening a
terminal and several other programs causes segfaults.

Installing in english works fine but if I try to change kde to swedish
then the problems start again. The default fonts also look really bad
after the change.
