First I liked to say good job on the installation part of Mandrake. Looks great and works good too. I've also just reinstalled Cooker because of the reiserfs problems. However, I've got to say, that I don't like the new install at all. It's showing way too few information during the install. It's just showing how long the installation is going to take, but it is not showing what it is doing right now. I would like it MUCH MUCH more, if the DrakX would show the packages it is installing right now. This way you'd see what's going on. That's also a thing I can't stand about Windows installation - it's also not showing anything. Bad. Any idea if this move might be reverted to the old way of showing information during install? So sprach Arnd Bergmann am Fri, Mar 30, 2001 at 03:44:58PM +0200: I guess grub is similar. grub is easier. There you can hit 'e' again to modify just the line you want and move around the line to change it. When you're done, you hit 'b' to boot. [Cooker] about kernel-2.4.2 problems ..
People are still patching left and right to fix this. I dont think its reiserfs specific problem, but more on IDE controller + chipset. They tried a patch to fix problems with some controllers/chipsets but it broke those that were working fine before. If you have the same hardware like me (Promise pdc202xx IDE controller + 440BX), its better to wait a bit until they release another set of patches before trying out. Im stuck with -12mdk since its the only old kernel version that I have that works. Someone mentioned that -18mdk works fine too. Give it a try.. =Spike=

[Cooker] improving printing support for 8.0
Hi everybody, we should improve the printing support for the 8.0 by adding a new "program": /usr/bin/printcommand - /etc/alternatives/printcommand by doing so the X-printing panel could replace the "default" symlink from /etc/alternatives/printcommand - /usr/bin/lpr to the xpp application: /etc/alternatives/printcommand - /usr/bin/xpp It would be easy (simply by adding 1 line in the "app-defaults" files) to get applications like "Netscape" or "AcroRead" or "gv" to use the Admins preferred printing tool by default. Here what to add for Netscape and AcroRead: /etc/X11/app-defaults/AcroRead + | *lprCommand:/usr/bin/printcommand + /etc/X11/app-defaults/Netscape + | *print.print_command: /usr/bin/printcommand + even other tools like Gvim could be patched to use the new "printcommand". [Cooker] Larger hd in latest computer, smaller installation in cooker...
Hello. I was wondering why 8.0 installation is so small even if I select all of the packages. Even, not all the packages appears in "detailed selection" (eg. pine!). I guess this is not a perfect solution, at least for workstation. I bought a pc for a friend of mine 2 days ago, there is a 30 GB hard-drive. All of the latest computer come out with no more than 20 GB of hd. Now that we have such infinite space for installation, we drastically reduce installed programms. We can now install 200 themes for each windowmanager and other silly things! OK, you say, that's too much. But at least you should provide a kind of button during installation like "INSTALL ALL"!!! I mean: if my hd has 30 GB, I do not get worried if 4-5 GB are sucked for a very complete system, even if I will lose other 260 MB fot OpenOffice6! Now, programms get better in quality and numbers, while installer reduce installed programms. I have /dev/hda2 6047252 1686564 4053500 29% / /dev/md0 3023504475976 2393944 17% /home/claudio /dev/hda3 5039248 4 4783264 0% /mnt/ready /dev/hdc6 16223640122364 15277164 1% /usr/src but nothing to burn cd with! 1.8 GB, and I cannot find cdrecord, pine, WindowMaker, xfce. Why not XFCE, for example, if during installation I selected "other window managers"?!?! I think that stupid workstation-users like me, with 40 GB of hd, would really like a COMPLETE installation, without "rpm -Uvh --force *" to have a COMPLETE system! I can understand those with servers, I even have some servers with 200 MB of software, but I guess that we're talking of expert people, people who know how to finely tune the installation. But on the other side many many people choose Mandrake (as I can read on Italian m.l. and newsgroup) for it's a COMPLETE distribution. I'm happy to "waste" 5 GB for a self-sufficient Linux System installed in 10 minutes. All is ready after first reboot. Now thing are gonna change?! :( Claudio -- System: Linux Mandrake (8.0-beta 26/03/2001 install) Kernel 2.4.2 on Dual Pentium III - 800 MHz 256 MB Ram - Raid Level 1

Well, SDL-1.2.0 is for cooker only not for FrozenCooker. is there a seperate directory i can download for frozencooker? I seem to have only gotten the 1.2 src.rpm, the 1.1 one was deleted. Yes, sorry my fault with .src.rpm name. I'll upload a new SDL12-1.2.0-2mdk.src.rpm. Currently for binaries, sunet.se has both libSDL1.1-1.1.8-3mdk and libSDL1.2-1.2.0-*.i586.rpm. Hmmm... binaries are useless to me -- I'm the nutcase who's building the distro on an alpha ;-) So if the 1.1.8-3mdk src.rpm can be put back, that would be great!! It seems to reside in: /mnt/BIG/distrib/traktopel/SRPMS/SDL-1.1.8-3mdk.src.rpm /export/home/mandrake/old/SDL-1.1.8-3mdk.src.rpm on kenobi... The CD1 iso image on site atik.ciril.fr appears to be incomplete (about 24MB short). Checked against md5, get failed indication. Repeated download twice, same result. Size on ftp site is 654,295,040. CD2 seems OK. Checked on another site and it reports size of 678,676,480 for CD1, I am downloading now. regards Dave

[Cooker] loose ends .. since we're in freeze and all
Hello - a few loose ends to tie up. 1) As of last night's install, there is still no mention in the Install Help (you know, when the CD boots up, and you hit F1) of the vgahi. It mentions vgalo, why not vgahi? works great. 2) As of last night's install, still doesn't have esound on either the install menu or as a default package. Without it or and equiv, can't only one task at a time use the sound system? what are we using instead if not esound? 3) Not everybody wants TeTex. The damn thing is over 50MB! It's doc's are another 43MB! The package menu has no way to unselect TeTex. Is there some reason why this is now required. 4) Xmovie could use a menu entry. Currently it installs, but nothing on any of the menus. Vinny
RE: [Cooker] Beta 3 CD1 Problem
- ftp://carroll.cac.psu.edu/pub/linux/distributions/mandrake-iso just completed CD1 download and the md5sum is OK. But I had to download the md5sum file from the new site. Something really messed up. The md5sums.8.0 from the atik.ciril.fr site for CD2 are not the same as from the carroll site, so now my CD2 image fails the check. Guess I have to get that one too, if I can get in. BTW , did it worked with the latest version of 2.2.18-Xmdk ? Not sure. iBCS definitely worked with the stock kernels up to 2.2.16 (not mdk) but i'm looking at using the mdk kernels for a box that will be needing iBCS emulation for sco binaries... Also since you're at it.. \8) May i interest you in including GFS (Global File System) in 2.2.19mdk which is currently stable for 2.2.x but not for 2.4.x; the URL is http://www.globalfilesystem.org. This would really help in getting mdk into supporting shared scsi/fc devices.. And Linux Streams http://www.gcom.com/home/linux/lis/dki.html Hope you could consider it.. \8)

No, I'm using a Gigabyte BX-2000 motherboard, which uses an Intel 440 BX chipset. But I am using a Promise UDMA 100 controller for my two IDE disks which are connected. [Cooker] DrakConf glitches
Hello, Launching DrakConf from a terminal comes up with two errors: Use of unitialized value in subroutine entry at /usr/X11R6/bin/DrakConf.real line 200, VERS line 1 the other is: Use of uninitialized value in concatenation (.) at /usr/X11R6/bin/DrakConf.real line 490, VERS line 1. no idea what this means, but hope it helps. Launching it from the regular menu in KDE it crashes, launched from the terminal window it seems to run OK, except for the errors it's complaining about. Vinny
