[Cooker] Better display modes?

2001-06-28 Thread guran

Hi

I have an old RIVA TNT2 PCI card with 32 MB and a NOKIA 19" 446XS display,
and I would like to use it to its limits.

My card can do 1600x1200 with 32-bits at 60, 70, 72 and 75 Hz refresh rate
and the monitor is preset at 1600x1200 at 75 Hz with a 93.76 kHz line
frequency.

What is the problem for the installer to find that?

Is it the line frequency and why is not 1280x1024 given as a possibility?

Fwd: Re: [Cooker] rpm-4.0.3-0.6mdk segfaults

2001-06-28 Thread OS

Same here with rpm-4.0.3-0.8mdk. The only way I could get this to work was to
download rpm-4.0.2 from rpm.org and tie a link from /usr/lib/librpm.so.0 to
the one created by rpm-4.0.2. Get loads of things like 'error: unrecognized
db option: "verify" ignored', but at least it works so long as I don't try to
rpm -e anything !!!

I experiened the same problems. The way I solved it was to install rpm
via the tar.gz (from the www.rpm.org site) -- I built the rpm package as
the prebuilt binaries didn't work. After installing the new rpm
package, I upgraded my locales packages (noted it on an earlier post)
and then updated my rpm package -- everything seems to be back to
normal.

[Cooker] Kups - version newer that 1.1-6??

2001-06-28 Thread Mads Rasmussen

If you go to

http://cups.sourceforge.net/kups/download.htm

It says that the most recent version is 0.8 however at rpmfind.net and in the
MDK 8 distro the version of Kups is 1.1-6.

However this version doesn't include new features of Cups 1.1.8 also in from
version 1.1.5 it should be possible to do quotas (I cannot find any docs on
that)

So anyone knows if a new version is available for kups and if, where to
download (both stable and beta)

Regards,

Mads

[Cooker] CUPS and smbspool link

2001-06-28 Thread David Eastcott

I had a problem with CUPS which caused documents to be printed over and over
forever. I removed all of cups including all directories and files, and
then re-installed it. After the installation, I was unable to add SMB
printers. I found that the link /usr/lib/cups/backend/smb was missing.
After creating it using ln -s `which smbspool` /usr/lib/cups/backend/smb
everything worked.

I had a look at the rpms, cups, cups-common, libcups1 and none of them appear
to create this link. Is there a reason why?

Is there another package which creates this link when it is installed?

Or is this link only created by the initial installation of the system?

Dave

[Cooker] 2.4.5-9 - Install pb's

2001-06-28 Thread guran

Hi
VERSION (rsync ftp.sunet.se)
Mandrake Linux Cooker-i586 20010628 12:16

I have done at least once a day a fresh download and a try to install and
have some guessing on Perl scripts and garbage recollection.

Some of the problems I see is to my understanding a repat of similar problems
from Cooker prior to 8.0 and now in 8.1. They might occur from 'cut and
paste' in a large program with mainly global variables.

linuxconf...in Ctrl-Alt-F1it is possible to stop the loop by hitting enter
when about two seconds is left before a restart.---thus Perl is not reading
the right memory?

DNS - serverPerlv18.821.542 -- if I try to enter this many times the
number is changing - here is from one chain: 1->18.822.195 2->18.776.549
3->18.821.846   4->18.841.117

Bootdisk-- a repat certainly.

No gpm from boot--Perl is not reading the same variable that is sent to the
screen.

The launching of KDE -- I have attached my xserver errors

Ok, problem identified and will be fixed soon in next release of urpmi.

This release note is related to mozilla which need WRITE access to its install
directory for its first start (that's why there is now the
rebuild-databases script).. And since this script is written by one
mozilla people, I'll inform him ...

Also thanks to you for your help.
BTW: I found in the release notes of mozilla 0.9.1:

If you are installing Mozilla on a multi-user operating system such as
Linux, Unix, or Windows 2000, you should install it separately in the user
directory of each user who plans to use Mozilla. (Bug 42184) If you install
Mozilla in a shared write-protected directory, it may not run properly.

I think they already know about these ownership problems.

I'm wondering if it is not a font problem..

Could you try to launch an X server and launch gdmconfig inside (which
use almost the same fonts as gdm) ?

Yes, I tried. Also removed some old/created files in /usr/lib/mozilla.
No success.
But I found that the files created by rebuild-databases.sh
(regchrom/regxpcom) are not readable by users (because I set default umask

So, please, correct %post scripts, which also calls rebuild-databases.sh.

Ummm, I have seen that statement many times... It almost always
means one of three things.

1. Cable to HDD needs removal & reseating or outright replacement.

2. "Hole" in HDD (if you are using WD hard disks you never know till
a verify step occurs (and WDs is where this happens from disk based
problems)

3. Yep, like the proggie says, memory. /images/memtest-x86.bin is
your friend. Just dd it to a floppy and boot with it on your install
target.

You can send me the bug report, but I can already tell you it wasn't
reproduceable here, unless you have incompletely described it. Of
course you migh have a heavy load on your NFS server which I did not
have here. And NFS in 8.0 is fragile, thanks to all the reiser
patches, which still don't seem to make reiser work as well as we
would like.

AFAIK:
With mounted (NFS, CD-ROM, HD) installs, you don't have to 'download'
stage 2; there is an uncompressed copy already on the installation media
so you just use it in situ. This is another, very significant reason why
NFS installs are 'better' than FTP installs.
