Update first install the new package and then removes the old one.
You can use the --noscripts options to get rid of it, to be sure
what the script does check the package with --scripts.

[Cooker] ripperX still not encoding MP3's

2002-08-13 Thread newslett

I have freshened to latest cooker as of now and ripperX will rip just
fine to wave but it does not encode to MP3 using any of the encoding
methods. It starts to and then switches of and says not encoding. At the
end of ripping it states the song has been written to MP3 and the file
created but the size of the file is always zero. This program beats the
pants off of Grip IMHO so I think it's important it work properly for
9.0. Any ideas??

The output isn't very helpful but here it is:

[root@host root]# ripperX

[Cooker] Suggestion: LISa / resLISa as a startup service

2002-08-13 Thread Mark Piper

Konqueror uses these for its (very nice) LAN browsing. However,
they're not included in the boot-up services (or perhaps they could be
in the KDE init scripts.)

Furthermore, reslisa (which is supposed to be per user) does not have
its setuid bit on, so it cannot be run by a normal user.

Is there any reason not to include one of these daemons by default?
Perhaps this could be addressed in the RPM.

[Cooker] drakconf-9.0-0.6mdk and krozat-9.0-3mdk ...

Hi,

1-
I get an error message when trying to update drakconf-9.0-0.4mdk to
drakconf-9.0-0.6mdk.

"rpm -Uvh drakconf-9.0-0.6mdk" tells me :
cp : Ne peut evaluer '/root/mcc.conf' par stat(): No such file or directory
error : execution of %trigger scriptlet from drakconf-9.0-0.6mdk, exit status1

after, a "rpm -qa | grep drakconf" tells me that both .4mdk and .6mdk are
installed (if I try to remove the .4mdk, I get the same error message than
when I try to update).

2-
"urpmi --auto-select" will always fails at the end because of
krozat-9.0-3mdk. The installer tells me that it is already installed.

->Why the installer does not go throw this kind of situation? Is there a
special option to allow that ?

I'm sure someone will flame me if I've got it wrong, but I believe
that the kernel-bla.yak.foo-mdk.src.rpm contains all of the patches
seperated from the vanilla kernel tree, and by "rpm --rebuild"-ing
the src.rpm of the kernel, all of the patches are applied to the
vanilla source tree. On the other hand, the kernel-source package
contains all the kernel source-tree with all of the patches already
applied.

I have just begun to toy with the new Terminal Services in mdk 9.0 on my
pratice box. I was wondering if it supports and what is needed to enable
local device acess on the terminals connected to this server. I would like
to be able to make use of the CD-Rom, Floppy, Zip250, and even possiably
sound; that my workstations have installed.

Soo glad to see this a part of the Distro, you at mdksoft are rad.

What kind of crap is that! Why distribute a broken makefile in the
kernel-source package?! For at least two builds 19-1, 19-2, the
kernel-source package is screwed-up so that you have to dig down
into it's bowels with a vi-macheti to carve crap out before it will
build a kernel. If some other package provided the missing files/
directories, I think that package darn well out to be required by
kernel-source!

Actually, Danny, the US isn't the problem.
It that one should license the use of mp3 encoders.
So I ASSUME Mandrake can't distribute it because they can't promise that
their users will license it themselves.
I'll just get it onto PLF.

perhaps other ways of submitting bug reports for v9 but I
would really like an answer to this one since I cannot
understand how anyone has gone beyond installation!

When installing, either beta 1 or beta 2 I get an error on
the XFree86-4.2 package. Various amounts of mucking about
with the package seems to indicate that the package itself is
uninstallable (this is on more than one machine). This is not
a CD read error. When it fails, I switch consoles and
manually try to install it, redirecting root appropriately,
and it starts to install but bombs on one file saying it
conflicts with a directory. The error is:
'/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb cpio rename failed, is a directory'
Having got this error on beta1 I assumed that it was just a
cock-up and waited for beta2. To make sure I tried installing
on three different machines. I even burned a CD with the
offending XFree package from the mirror, but to no avail.
Most confusingly I cannot find a single reference to anyone
else getting this error. What is going on?

discovered that gnome would not start either.

The problem: /usr/bin/gnome-session: relocation error:

The Solution: Setting GDK_USE_XFT=0

The result of the Solution -- no AA

So what is the problem that would prevent GDK_USE_XFT=1 from working
(this is the gnome2 default)

During the installation of linux Mandrake you can tell which cd you have. It should be
good to map it with urpmi. If you have only the cd 1 during installation why do you
put the 2 other CDs in urpmi. For me I considere it could be interesting to only put

I have Metacity themes installed under $HOME/.metacity/themes.
If I start metacity-setup those themes are all in the listbox.
If I press 'Go to theme folder' Nautilus opens the above directory.
But if I actually choose a theme all I get are warnings like this
in $HOME/.xsession-errors:

Window manager warning: Failed to read theme from file
/usr/share/themes/metamile-marker/metacity-1/metacity-theme-1.xml:
Failed to open file
'/usr/share/themes/metamile-marker/metacity-1/metacity-theme-1.xml':
No such file or directory
Window manager warning: Failed to load theme "metamile-marker": Failed
to open file
'/usr/share/themes/metamile-marker/metacity-1/metacity-theme-1.xml':
No such file or directory

It seems Metacity looks under /usr/share/themes/ for it's themes
and cannot see those under $HOME/.metacity/themes.

The same happens if I change the theme with gconf-editor instead of
metacity-setup.

Installing a new theme with metacity-setup fails too: after choosing
the theme and pressing 'install' the metacity-setup just hangs and
responds nomore.

I can't remember when I tried Cooker's metacity(-setup) the last time
but theme switching and installing worked then.

Cheers,
Andreas

[Cooker] 9.0b2 autofs problem

2002-08-13 Thread Jake r Magee

Im not sure if this is a bug or not, but it is a problem I have ran
into.
Autofs is started and stopped at boot and shutdown. I now realize that
I dont need to mount a /net point. The problem was that shutdown would
lockup every time because umount /net would fail.
I found that /etc/auto.master is where the config file is and commented
the line "/net /etc/auto.net --timeout=60 ".

What I was wondering is shouldn't umount /net "timeout" after "60"
seconds, milliseconds or whatever it is? at shutdown or do i
misunderstand something. It never would for me, no matter how long I
waited.

thanks

The whole point of env is you aren't hard coding the
path to script interpreters, because they might be in
different locations on different machines, but then
you have to hardcode the location of env, which people
expect to be in /usr/bin, you can't change that!

Actually, only the directory needs to be 0600 (this is how gpg creates
the directory by default). The files inside don't matter, when you
add a new key, the pubring.gpg file will again become 0644 because of
the umask.

you would untar it on a harddisk and removed the foo you couldn't tell the

Ehm yes, it's beta time, the best time to update libraries and stuff
according to a good mandrake tradition. ;)

[Cooker] 2.4.19-2mdk make xconfig error

2002-08-13 Thread Mark Watts

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Ok, I installed the source for kernel 2.4.19-2mdk and ran make clean, followed by make
xconfig.
I get the following errors:

   drivers/net/wan/Config.in: 46: can't handle dep_bool/dep_mbool/dep_tristate
condition

If I change that line from dep_tristate to tristate it lets me continue to:

   drivers/sound/Config.in: 234: unable to open sound/Config.in

If i comment that line out (bear with me) I can continue to:

   3rdparty/bcm5820/Config.in: 2: can't handle dep_bool/dep_mbool/dep_tristate
condition

Again, change that to 'tristate' and I can then perform configuration changes in
xconfig.

However, when I run make dep, I get the following:

make[2]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-2.4.19-2mdk/lib'
make -C sound fastdep
make: Entering an unknown directory
make: *** sound: No such file or directory. Stop.
make: Leaving an unknown directory
make[1]: *** [_sfdep_sound] Error 2

This is proably due to me commenting out the sound line above, so:

a) Am I fixing the tristates properly? and
b) What is the correct fix for the sound error?

Cheers,

Mark.

Re: [Cooker] HardDrake2 hangs in 9.0beta2

2002-08-13 Thread Jeremy Wilkins

The box locks solid, no response, can't drop to console, etc.

It wont respond to pings, cant ssh in, mouse wont move in X. Theres no
hard disk activity, neither caps lock nor numlock will toggle.

After 10mins the computer still does not respond.

Why update freetype2? It's good to know it has fixes, but what fixes for?

I saw Debian people complaining about new freetype & OOo.

Re: [Cooker] gnome drawer panel

2002-08-13 Thread Rial Juan

Known bug; supposedly fixed in gnome-panel 2.0.6 as can be read on
http://mail.gnome.org/archives/desktop-devel-list/2002-August/msg00169.html

Wanted to file a bugreport myself tonight, but then I checked the rpm to
see who the maintainer was, and I noticed Mr Crozat actualy does a
pretty decent job updating the gnome-panel package on a very frequent
basis, so I figured I'll just wait a day or two untill he gets around to
it.

So just hang in there; prolly fixed before you can say some nasty word
in Polish (unless you're Polish; in that case replace by Swahili :p)

Yes, I send this apps there are few month, and someone have rebuilt it, then I
forgot it because I am not in packager tag.
I will looking this evening to upgrade it. If it is too buggy to be in
