Hi,

gnome-python and pygtk2 are contrib packages, you don't need to
install them. Also, eroaster can only depend on pygtk2 once it has
been moved to main. This will be post 9.1.
The BuildRequires need to be changed to include new gnome-python and

Requires needs to include gnome-python-bonobo and to exclude the

Thanks, I'll try to build a hackeroaster package for the contribs.

Re: [Cooker] raidstuff+install

2003-02-21 Thread Bruno Prior
Same old problem. Mandrake has been doing this as long as I can remember.

RAID should not be dependent on raidtab to start. In fact, there are
plenty of circumstances where one might have a raidtab that is
inconsistent with your actual setup. RAID should be started by default
using autorecognition based on partition type. The stuff in the init
scripts should, at most, be a fallback, where autorecognition has failed
to start arrays. Even then, there should probably be some means to
indicate that this is what you want to do, rather than just doing it by
default, as you might have wanted to temporarily disable the array by
changing the partition type. You don't really want to have to edit your
raidtab to decide which arrays will or won't start.

I pointed out this (and problems with mkraid during beta3 install) a
week ago, but it doesn't seem to have grabbed anyone's attention.
Basically, Mandrake could solve their RAID failings once and for all if
they would just build RAID (at least 1 and 5) support into their default
kernels. Of course, there are other ways of doing it, but no one seems
to have figured out how to do it in a more complicated way without
breaking various setups. Building RAID into the kernel would cut the
Gordian knot.

Cheers,

Bruno Prior

Re: [Cooker] Re: [Bug 1967] [galaxy-gnome] No way to get the Color

2003-02-21 Thread Craig Drummond
Hi,

In reply to Frederic Crozat, I'd like to know why the folowing is WRONG???

1/ is WRONG by design.. a GTK (or any other toolkit BTW) theme should
never be adapted to detect which colors the current desktop (whatever
desktop environment) is running.. I don't care if ONE theme (Geramik) is
 doing that, this is wrong..

...because? The only reason I can see is that Geramik reads its colour settings
from a Qt/KDE based config file. What's the problem with this? Isn't it better
that a theme designed as multi-toolkit (Geramik, QtCurve, Blue/FreeCuve, Galaxy)
also use the same colour settings? Otherwise, what's the point? Hard-coding
colours into a theme is just plain lazy. I don't use GNOME, so I'm not sure if
you can change colours there. If not, then wouldn't the best thing to do be
create a GNOME control centre-applet that sets GNOME colours, and also writes
these to ~/.qt/qtc (and the KDE files)?

Also the theme is not adapting itself to whatever desktop is running - it does
not know which desktop is running - it just *always* reads its colour from the
qt file.

I can understand someone not liking Geramik because it is pixmap based - and
this is a fair complaint. But to complain because it unifies the colour settings
is to disregard what a LOT of users want.

Surely Mandrake, as a desktop based distro, is better of trying to get as much
of a unified lookas possible. If so, then why not have the theme synchronise its
colours between toolkits? Saying that the user should use KDE's means to change
the KDE theme, and GTK's to change GTK's takes away the whole point of the theme
- to unify things.

Craig.

p.s. I'll admit to a slight bias here, benig the author of Geramik and QtCurve
(well not so much author I suppose, as modifier...)

This means that finally we have access to Bitstream quality fonts that we can

Is there anyway this can be squeezed into Mandrake 9.1? It'd be cool if 9.1

Yes, and frankly, they suck.

Vera Sans looks crappy and amateurish compared to verdana. Serif looks
unprofessional compared to Times New Roman. Sans Monospace is the best
of the bunch, but it's unusable for terminals because it's too tall and
thin. People are used to square characters in terminals. I downloaded
the betas in excitement and went straight back to my Microsoft fonts
five minutes later with considerable disappointment...:\

Not that bad. Regarding the Sans Monospace, it's a mid way between
Courier and Andale Mono.

Regarding Times, you have Nimbus URW clones. If you find they don't
look as Times New Roman (of course the TTF), it's because
of hinting, but maybe someone could better hint them.

Furthermore how can you say that Vera Sans are crap compared to Verdana (which
of course doesn't include serif font family)? See these examples:

[Cooker] Xine frontend

2003-02-21 Thread Reinout van Schouwen

Hello,

Probably too late since we're in package freeze, but I want to have
mentioned it anyway:

Xine is a great media player but it's UI pretty much sucks and doesn't
adhere to any guideline whatsoever. Fortunately Xine is modular by design
and there are a few much better graphical frontends available for it. One
of them is totem, which has 27 votes currently on MandrakeClub. Only today
I noticed it has not been included in the 9.1 package list.

I believe the inclusion of such a (GNOME HIG compliant) frontend for Xine
would really add quality to the distro.

[Cooker] [Bug 2004] [drakxtools] unabe to connect with a dsl modem

see this thread:
http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=mandrake-cookerm=104530094212372w=2
and try them.
or change the settings in /etc/sysconfig/network-script/ifcfg-eth*.

Still I can't get the adsl connection.
RTL8029(AS) works fine on mdk9.0, rh8.0, rh8.1beta1-3, knoppix3.1,
UHUlinux and latest SUSE.
I found ADMtek AN983B in the store, and I bought it for US$6, but
it also can't get the connection (and I lost money :-/).

I think mandrake9.1beta series have some problems for the adsl connections,
but most users get the connections, so I may mistake for some settings.
ADMtek AN983B works fine on rh8.1beta3.

I use the mdk9rc1.
The bar at the bottom of the screen in KDE (I don't know its real name, those one with
the K-menu, the task bar, and so one) disapears sometimes.

The only way to make it to come back seems to log out of KDE and log in back.

When installing the latest RC1 of the Mandrake 9.1 OS I got stuck at the point
where you are supposed to create new user accounts. I installed using Dutch
language and have not tested if this problem appeared also in standard English
installation.
At the point where you create users there are four buttons on the bottom of the
frame. I created an account but got stuck because there were only three buttons
at the bottom of my screen. This way I was only allowed to keep adding users. I
tried to use the tab button to reach the hidden button and it worked, but if
one does not think of this the installation progress would be impossible to
complete. at least in Dutch installation mode.

2003-02-21 Thread Craig.Drummond
https://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1967

--- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-02-21 11:21 ---
As the author of Geramik, and QtCurve (modified Blue/FreeCurve) - I can tell you
that it'd be pretty easy (a couple of days work) to modify the Galaxy engine to
read it's colours from ~/.qt/qtrc. If you have a look at the qt_settings.c/h
files, and the use_button_color() stuff in qtcurve.c you'll see how this can be
done. If you want more info, then please feel free to email me.

Also creating a GTK app to modify this should also be failry easy - the file
formats not too difficult to understand, But I don't know enough about GTK to do
this.

Craig.

description:
Hi,
I noticed that Mandrake Galaxy gtk, while much nicer looking atm than
Mandrake Galaxy KDE, does not seem to be able to change colors, at
least that I've noticed. The issue being that if I'm using KDE, like many of
your users are, I may choose to change the color scheme, which inturn
causes GTK stuff to stick out really badly.

There is a very easy way to solve this, which is why I am reporting this.
libqtpixmap, a derivative of the libpixmap engine employed by most GTK
themes, does color matching with KDE's color settings. Now, I'm not sure
how Galaxy's theme engine works, but I'm assuming importing the code for
this other engine (which is the one used for Geramik, by the way) would be
relatively easy. If, on top of that, you made a little tool to adjust the color
settings from Gnome, Mandrake would be the FIRST distribution (afaik) to
offer both KDE and Gnome users and easy way to keep all major
applications using the same color scheme!

This would dramatically improve Galaxy and fix a major usability bug
between KDE and Gnome that has never been solved before right out of
the box. Using a static color palate in GTK apps is alright, but the whole
unified look is only good so long as no one changes the KDE color
scheme. I noted this in my review of Red Hat Linux 8 (at OfB.biz) and
marked down the visual apperance somewhat because of that problem. In
a way unified widgets giving the appearance of all the applications being
the same, will probably confuse users MORE when the color palates won't
change all of the applications. It'll probably result in support headaches, I'd
suspect.

Anyway, libqtpixmap is available for both GTK1 and GTK2. I can't say how
much I think this would be a great thing, and everyone who has ever
wanted to be able to easily adjust GTK color schemes (probably most
Windows migrants) will thank-you for making the change.

  -Tim

Sounds resonable to me. Thanks for bearing with me; I didn't mean to
overcomplicate things (I've experienced firsthand having to manually change the
encoding on file/dir names, and it wasn't fun... a whole weekend for a
relatively small tree :p).

I'll keep an eye on the man pages in the next RC. I have a feeling that they're
being decoded wrong so that the hyphen is scrambled (indicating potential other
problems).

Could it be possible that it's an issue with my specific manufacturer's card?
(it's an albatron medusa Ti4200) The best description I can give for the
problems is that many of the widgets were being painted in the wrong place or
not at all, and almost everything was transparent.

9.1 rc1

I have tried all the geforce suggestions given in the mandrake control centre
and the only one that vaguely works is fbdev. All the rest gave varying amounts
of corruption problems. I finally gave up and installed nvidia's own drivers.

Sorry if this is vauge and is seemingly useless informatioin but I feel it's
important to share this in order to illustrate what a user would experience if
9.1 is released with nothing done to avoid the geforce4 problems illustrated in rc1.

I just want to collect some thoughts about this package in here. I have allready
posted some of them maybe.

Update this package?
There is a 3.2pre1 out since some time. Current in mandrake is 3.1pre10. I don't
know if the isdn4linux folks never release stable releases.

Split up the package?
Debian did split this package in several smaller packages. I guess this should
be done here to. As suggestion could be used the debian packages. Some of my
thoughts after reading the debian package site:
- isdn4k- core utils
- isdn4k- capi utils/active-cards aka capi4k-utils
- vbox2
Suggestions (there are several solutions/extensions vor vbox) -
- vbox2www
- vbox3
- vbox3www
- raccess4vbox
- vbox-cm ()
(for people who understand german: www.malte-wetz.de)

- isdn4k- xtools
- isdn4k- eurofile
.

Currently the package is 5MB big and some things are missing.

divertctrl is missing .

Alltough the kerneldrivers are compiled with divert-support (divert-dsss1.o),
the isdn4k-utils are not, so the divertctrl tool is missing. This tools can do
things like call-deflection. call forwarding and so on with a rule set very
similar to ipchains. In short a nice to have

it woud be nice to have isdn-compression.

Some ISPs provides different compression methods for isdn-connections. Due the
compression loading of a lot of uncompressed data (like big text-sites) can be a
lot faster than normal (for text I would say 5 times faster). As far as I can
see isdn_ccp and lzs compression is missing. I would not mind to discover this
further if there is interest.

capi4hylafax is missing.

capi4hylax is an extension to hylafax to use hylafax with fax-capable isdn-cards
that have a capi interface. (mainly all cards from AVM with their propritary
driver, all active AVM Cards, Eicon Diva should have capi-drivers too, I don't
know about auerswald).

pppdcapiplugin is missing.

this is part of the actual isdn4k utils. it makes possible to use pppd in order
with isdn-cards with capi-driver.

There seems to be a problem with the driver capidrv.o and devfs.

Alltough the /lib/dev-state/isdn/isdninfo is working (as I understand a copy of
/dev/isdn/isdninfo ??) the /dev/isdn/isdninfo worked not in the last releases. I
don't know about the current, since I could not test it yet.

Think thats all for now I could think of. I posted something similar to cooker
allready but wanted to save this here.

After installing 9.1rc1 I tried to install the nvidia drivers;
this failed for 2 reasons, of which the second was not clear to me:
first, you have to do:
'export IGNORE_CC_MISMATCH=true' before typing 'rpmbuild --rebuild NVidia_*'
if not it stops;
second you have to install the kernel source by doing
urpmi kernel-source(s)
Even though I had selected the development group (left bottom in Mandrake selection,
with LSB and dev. packages), the kernel sources were not installed. Also the error
message is not clear at all, and I believe beginners who own an nvidia card would bail
out at that point.

So could you make sure the kernel-sources are installed with the Mandrake selection
for development platform?

If you have xine-plugins installed, which is required, you should at least have

Your printer does not show up in /proc/bus/usb/devices which means that the
kernel didn't recognize it. So printerdrake or CUPS have no access to it. The
problem must be fixed in the kernel (or can be surrounded by connecting the
printer to the parallel port or to a USB controller on a PCI card).

There were known problems with USB on VIA chipsets and the kernel of Mandrake
9.0. I have even heard about that one could work around/fix the problem by
installing the kernel from Mandrake 8.2.

So it is really strange that noone succeeded to fix the Cooker kernel to work
with these chipsets again (it is possible as it worked in Mandrake 8.2).

I reassign this bug to the kernel, as it is definitely a kernel problem.

Either your dhcp server should be setting ip/hostname via MAC address:
host mybox { hardware ethernet XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX; fixed-address

or, your machine should be providing a hostname in the dhcp request

drakconnect did not seem to do the right thing, so I added:
DHCP_HOSTNAME=mybox

I already explain it is up to the DESKTOP environment to adapt theme, not
the reverse... Geramik approach is wrong by design.. It is fixing the
consequences of KDE not customizing GTK theme colors.. The best approach is to
fix root of the problem (ie KDE not customizing theme colors).

But the desktop (KDE) IS adapting the theme - the theme is then just reading the
colours from ~/.qt/qtrc. So the only thing KDE is not doing is explicitly setting GTK
colours. I'm not sure if you can do this - as you say below GNOME can't. So, your
main
objection to Geramik, QtCuve, etc is that they read the colours from ~/.qt/qtrc and
not ~/.gtkrc? Is this that BIG of an issue? It's still a resouce file, no? Therefore,
I still fail to see what the problem is. It looks as if your just saying - I use
GNOME, it doesn't support changing colours, so sod everything else. Allowing Galaxy
to
change its colours via qtrc would have no effect if the user never changed the
colours
via QtConfig or KControl - so there is no problem. However, if a user wishes to
customise it they can - giving them the choice.

I haven't said GNOME users can't change their colors.. They can, through
theme but there is no UI for that ATM.

I think you are completely missing my point : a theme for a specific
toolkit MUST be desktop (and other toolkits) agnostic.. If you need to
patch your theme to read another toolkit settings, this mean something
is broken elsewhere.. You are fixing the consequences of the bug, not
the bug itself..

FYI, GNOME doesn't have dialog to change theme colors... So this problem
is currently not a problem under GNOME..

Well it is a problem under GNOME - why should users not be able to set the colours of
 themes?

Probably because nobody has coded it yet or felt the necessity of doing
it..

What you are asking for is clearly based on a KDE centric point of view..

Nope - just someone who likes to change colours - and have both toolkits look the
same. Your objects are from a GNOME centric view.

No, they are from a toolkit (here GTK) perspective.. GTK is not
depending on GNOME, it should not depend on KDE nor QT.. (And I'm sure
KDE folks things the same way about QT and GTK..)

RE: Re: [Cooker] Re: [Bug 1967] [galaxy-gnome] No way to get the Color

2003-02-21 Thread Craig Drummond
Forgot to send this to th elist...

So, your main
objection to Geramik, QtCuve, etc is that they read the colours from ~/.qt/qtrc and
not ~/.gtkrc? Is this that BIG of an issue? It's still a resouce file, no? Therefore,
I still fail to see what the problem is. It looks as if your just saying - I use
GNOME, it doesn't support changing colours, so sod everything else. Allowing Galaxy to
change its colours via qtrc would have no effect if the user never changed the colours
via QtConfig or KControl - so there is no problem. However, if a user wishes to
customise it they can - giving them the choice.

FYI, GNOME doesn't have dialog to change theme colors... So this problem
is currently not a problem under GNOME..

Well it is a problem under GNOME - why should users not be able to set the colours of
themes?

What you are asking for is clearly based on a KDE centric point of view..

Nope - just someone who likes to change colours - and have both toolkits look the
same. Your objects are from a GNOME centric view.

Either your dhcp server should be setting ip/hostname via MAC address:

drakconnect did not seem to do the right thing, so I added:

only taking the colors for themes that theme authors give us? That seems a

No, I think that it is based on the most customization possible point of view.
The reason that it seems to be KDE centric is because it *has* the ability to
be customizable.

No, I think that it is based on the most customization possible point of
view. The reason that it seems to be KDE centric is because it *has* the
  ability to be customizable.

About customizations, I suggest you read Havoc article :

 http://www106.pair.com/rhp/free-software-ui.html

A very good article that backs up what you have been saying in some areas and
supports what a few of us have been saying in others.

I quote:
So how is the decision [to add a preference] made? It's a judgment call. I
try to go through some questions like these:

1. Ask questions to find out what's really bugging someone who requests a
preference. What is the annoyance or inefficiency that prompted them to ask?

2. Can said annoyance be made to go away for all users without requiring a
preference? If so, just do that. You may have to think about the big picture
of the UI to figure out how to make it Just Work.

3. Is the annoyance or inefficiency really significant, or did it cost them 1
second doing something that users do once per week on average? If it's just
some trivial thing, then the extra feature or preference probably costs more
than it's worth, even if you can't make things Just Work.

4. Does any other OS have this feature or preference? I'm all for innovation,
but if no one else is doing something, you should think it through twice to
be sure there isn't a reason they aren't doing it. If you're appropriately
humble you'll probably find that a lot of thought and user testing has gone
into the currently popular platforms.

The only question that we can't answer yes to is number 3, if it is trivial or
not. I think that all the others we can say with a fair degree of certainty,
yes. In the case of number 4, other OSes having this feature, I would say
that most of them do have the abiltity to look the same across almost all
apps when you change the color of the widgets.

The main reason I am pushing this is I have seen what people said about
Redhat's BlueCurve. It was lambasted in some circles solely for the color
customization issue, I don't want the same to happen to Mandrake's Galaxy.
If you are going to make things look the same, then you should probably make
sure that they *always* look the same. The first time Linux user who goes
into KControl and selects a different color scheme and finds their Gimp
looking very out of place is going to get a bad impression of what Linux can
do. Windows handles color changes without a problem. The only way to
really fix the issue is to pull the color settings module from KControl,
not a good option at all, or make it so that the color scheme is the same
between GTK and QT. Does this make any sense? Or am I just talkin' outa my
ass?

I find this ironic. Windows is actually *really bad* in this very area.
The problem is they change their appearance too often. There are lots of
apps which were too lazy to be coded properly and just hard-coded a
Win98-style appearance into themselves. These now look hideously out of
place under WinXP, unless you give up XP's new-style interface and make
it into Win2000 :). There's even some old apps that still look like
Windows 3.1! By no means do all of these respond correctly to theme
changes, either. Windows isn't a very good model for how to this (or,
indeed, anything else :)

Well, that is very nice, I wasn't aware of that. But that doesn't mean
much if contrib packages aren't shipped with the distro (or are they?).

I think I made my point very clear.. It is a bug in Kcontrol..

It is a bug because another toolkit doesn't have to ability to do it?
Interesting.

 There is
also a project to let GTK and QT discover the color used by the other
 toolkits (using XSettings)..

Do you have a link that I could reference? Thanks.

No. And even if they would, it would be nice to have totem used as a
DEFAULT-skin in Mandrake.
