Yes, gc basically thinks automake 1.4 - 1.7 are mostly compatible, and
makefile.am from all software can mostly be parsed by all of the versions of
automake. I don't insist anymore, in the end it's not me that hurts. :-(

For intltool, that should be determined by each package individually. In most
cases, they are not needed as BuildRequires, since stock intltool bundled inside
tarball is used, instead of system ones. In rare cases (where intltoolize is
called to overwrite intltool inside tarball), BuildRequires: intltool would be
needed then.

This will work as an icon in the KDE system tray, and will display a little

the screenshot.

It only checks the update source, and does it without going through URPMI -
ie. it gets the mirrorslist from the mandrake site, and downloads the

The netfs init script runs before ifplugd called by the network initscript
has brought up eth0. This causes NFS mounts to fail at startup time. They can be
mounted manually after booting. ifplugd is correctly called with -w but this
only makes it wait for a link beat. After detecting the link, it takes about 3
seconds for the interface to come up, and this is done asynchronuously, so the
netfs script has already finished by that time.

It's a bit late to mention this now. And you may rather want to consider
discussing it on the libconf mailing list.

I am not sure if GST supports it, but one of the ideas of libconf is to
seperate the schema of the config file from the configuration tool, so
that if a package is updated, so is it's schema, so the config tool will
still generate a working config.

The backend scripts are independant and talks XML to the GUI (or
whatever you could think of) it's even implemented in perl.

Also a gui configurator might sound 'nice' from a coders view, but it
totally breaks any kind of GUI abstraction other than change value of
 setting X.

You can't make that judgement until you have seen the final gui's! The
examples in the libconf are *examples*.

Having that as a starting point is the _wrong_ way to do it.

This is OT, but I'd like to mention that the system tray of the ROX
panel can display the balloon messages. It's included in the package
rox-systray in the contribs.

Damned, I didn't understood what you said this morning, I wasn't totally awoken ;)
I agree, the notification area must be used.
Then, the same program could be used by both GNOME and KDE.

In Bugzilla we still have to vote for bugs so that they are
considered as new. I think this is a litle annoying, since it is
very difficult to both search for bugs, report them and also try the

 voted for and not corrected.

officially, communauty pre filter bugs so that developpers only look
at confirmed ones.

actually, some of us look at unconfirmed bugs because some are
interessants (that is they do provide enough information).

if an unconfirmed bug provide all needed informations in order to fix
it, we'll try to fix it rather than an obscure hw bug we cannot do
much about even if it's confirmed.

i think we've improved quite a lot in fixing bugs (see

of course we can still do better on bug tracking side :-(

The backend scripts are independant and talks XML to the GUI (or
whatever you could think of) it's even implemented in perl.

we do neither want to reinvent the wheel nor want to parse xml
everywhere but we do want (sometimes in the future) to:
- centralize parsing templates,
- alter config files without totaly over-writing them (aka keep user
comments order and better tool interoperability)

Also a gui configurator might sound 'nice' from a coders view, but
 it totally breaks any

we (at least me) never plan to use it.
we only want to have a better data layer / gui layer separation.

it can only increase tool quality to have a better mvc than to have
more or less robust parsing stiff in each tool that need it.

currently, we have:
- centralized shell-like file parsing (either csh or sh variants) in
perl-MDK-Common (used by quite a lot of tools)
where a simple hash map the var=value from the file
- some kind of directives-like parsing in printerdrake
- some kind of various let rewrite it on saving file formats parsing
(eg: python func calls in draksec, ...)
- some less than totally robusts a la win3.1 .ini files parsing in
drakboot for autologin settings for kdm gdm in drakboot

having a working template for reading ini files[1] would enable to
have some quite much robust parsing engine for drakboot and other
tools that need it, both enforcing values saving safety and not
altering uneeded bits of the files.

the libconf purpose is only to have a centralized file parsing
altering engine that is both robust and respectful towars other config

squeeze all of the window list entries into the same 1/2 inch originally

If I right-click on the bottom panel and choose Preferences, the dialog comes
up, and after a second or two it closes by itself and the window list entries
all get expanded to their proper size. If I'm quick enough to get to the
Preferences Dialog and change the size of the panel by any amount either way,
the window list entries all get expanded to their proper size, *and* the dialog

[Cooker] dhcp lately

2003-07-24 Thread Austin
Just wondering,
Were any networking packages upgraded or severly changed two days ago?
As of Tuesday's cooker update, I can't access the dhcp network here
from any of my cooker machines. I can't see any major changes in
ifplug, ifconfig, dhcpcd, etc., just rebuilds.
Anyone else?
BTW, the network recognises my machines by MAC address.
Also, static IP still works perfectly.

Currently we do have about 7 FIP, for various reasons. One can still pass

be as simple as saying we don't ship rwho by default.

If the concensus is that rwho should not get pulled in by lsb, I don't

[Cooker] Configuring of LILO during 92beta1 install process

2003-07-24 Thread Hamster
Hi,

I was very sad to notice that during LILO configuration in the install
process, its no longer possible to select a video mode, and hence you can no
longer add a vga= line during install. I did click on the advanced
properties tab and can't find that option anywhere.

Is anyone else missing it? How come it was removed? Or am I just really
really blind?

Helen (hoping it gets put back)

Re: [Cooker] curl problems with urpmi - follow-up question

2003-07-24 Thread Serge Pluess
Hi

I thought I would try some of those tests you suggested. First of all
the Directory with the updated cooker files on the ftp server is :
/home/spluess/Mandrake-devel
So I tried the following curl command:

[Serge-Pluesss-Computer:~] root# curl -k --location-trusted -R -f
--stderr - -z harddrake-9.2-0.21mdk.i586.rpm -O
ftp://spluess:[EMAIL PROTECTED]//home/spluess/Mandrake-devel/cooker/i586/
Mandrake/RPMS/harddrake-9.2-0.21mdk.i586.rpm

This is the result of that command:

curl: (9) Couldn't cd to home

So then I tried it without the double //:

[Serge-Pluesss-Computer:~] root# curl -k --location-trusted -R -f
--stderr - -z harddrake-9.2-0.21mdk.i586.rpm -O
ftp://spluess:[EMAIL PROTECTED]/home/spluess/Mandrake-devel/cooker/i586/
Mandrake/RPMS/harddrake-9.2-0.21mdk.i586.rpm

Same result:

curl: (9) Couldn't cd to home

then I thought I might try not to specify the /home/spluess part as the
Mandrake-devel folder is under the user accounts home directory:

[Serge-Pluesss-Computer:~] root# curl -k --location-trusted -R -f
--stderr - -z harddrake-9.2-0.21mdk.i586.rpm -O
ftp://spluess:[EMAIL PROTECTED]/Mandrake-devel/cooker/i586/Mandrake/RPMS/
harddrake-9.2-0.21mdk.i586.rpm

That command just hangs. Same also for double // between dbdev and
Mandrake-devel

Then I tried adding --disable-epsv, same results as above

curl -l ftp://spluess:[EMAIL PROTECTED]/ also just hangs

so then I tried to add -P and I got the file listing from my home dir
with the -l command

Next try was the transfer command above with the -P option and this
time it worked, but only without the /home/spluess part in the ftp path:

[Serge-Pluesss-Computer:~] root# curl -k --location-trusted -P -R -f
--stderr - -z harddrake-9.2-0.21mdk.i586.rpm -O
ftp://spluess:[EMAIL PROTECTED]/Mandrake-devel/cooker/i586/Mandrake/RPMS/
harddrake-9.2-0.21mdk.i586.rpm

and here is the output

% Total% Received % Xferd Average Speed Time
 Curr.
 Dload Upload TotalCurrent Left
 Speed
100 77206 100 772060 0 296k 0 0:00:00 0:00:00
0:00:00 787k

But to come back to the actual urpmi I think like you said that curl
has a problem when the path is specified from the / directory (such as
/home/spluess) whereas wget doesn't seem to have that same problem as
it works just fine with urpmi:

I tried all the available versions of wine with mdk9.1, and whith all of
them I have the same behaviour: I start the installation of office2000 and
I can choose the components, insert the code, but when it should start to
copy the files, the application hangs. Keep in mind that crossover office
functions perfectly and on the same machine, whith other linux distros wine
 functions.
Now I tried mdk 9.2 beta 1 and it's wine package and I have the same
 behaviour.

It seems to have a time delay communication whith my /dev/hdb1, but I have no

[Cooker] [Bug 2270] [menu] menudrake strips down everything after non-English character

ok, menu package part is now uploaded in menu-2.1.5-121mdk

menudrake part will be in next menudrake release..

Pablo : in fact, the charset key was only used by KDE3 menu-method to encode or
not .desktop... I've modified menudrake to always encode in utf-8 and set the
charset key to utf8, which will not break KDE menu method.

I'll close this bug when menudrake is uploaded.

menudrake in mdk 9 with czech localization causes the following:

when you create record or folder with nonEnglish character it creates
file_xyz.desktop which is fine. the problem is that it writes something like
this in it:
Comment=the whole title in UTF-8
Comment[cs]=comment stripped after a non-english character

example:
Comment=Zábava
Comment[cs]=Z

and you can see only the letter Z in the menu :(

the only resolution is to edit the .desktop file (in ~/.kde..) manually.

Ok, anyway, it is fixed by slightly modifying test106 of curl (to change // to

 - drakbackup: misc fixes (stew)

others bugs :
+ Drakbackup - Manual Configuration - What :
1°/ repetition
- one checkbox with use incremental backup ( don't replace old backup
)
- two radio buttons with use incremental backup twice.
=== there should have only the checkbox.

2°/ another repetition
You also have a note : incremental backup don't ... backups
this note explain the same thing that what you have in the brackets. If
you keep the note you should remove the explanation in the bracket.

3°/ bad explanation
concerning this note, if found that the explication for incremental
backup can ledd to confusion. Why ? if after I check rewind tape for
tape backup or erase media I will lost my old backup but I will not
really understand it because of the incremental backup explanation.
Saying that incremental backup allow to backup only modified files may
be better. On top of that if the admin put noatime in fstab, it will
remind him that maybe he should note use incremental backup.
== a better explanation may be : incremental backup allow to backup
only modified files

+ Drakbackup - Manual Configuration - Where - Net :
1°/ text display pb at minimum size.
when mcc is at the minimum size, you can't see all the text for Others
keys exist ( not drakbacup ones )
== text should fit in the window at minimum size

2°/ lack of help
I'm a newbie and I select ssh. But what is Expect ( use Expect for ssh )
? adavantage ? how do I use it ? do I have something to configure on the
client and/or serveur side ?
== need at least a tooltip, or better a help text when you click on
help button. The same for the others entries.

+ Drakbackup - Manual Configuration - Where - CD/DVD-RW Drive :

1°/ explanation too long for CD/DVD choice
In french the text is so long that it take 3 lines and you have some
text under the entry where you select your device.

2°/ non editable combo
IMHO we should rather have option menus

3°/ RW erasing
- at minimum size, the checkbox overlap the Erase Now button
- you say Check you want to erase you rewritable support (1st session
).
== Saying : Erase the CD-RW each time is better and ... shorter.
== why only the 1st session ? if I want to erase a CD-RW, I'd rather
have everything erase and a full erase.

+ Drakbackup - Manual Configuration - Where - Tape :

1°/ non editable combo
IMHO we should rather have option menus

2°/ Check/Are you sure pb and possible confusion
- drakbackup should not says Are you sure you want to erase your tape
before It should say : Erase tape before each backup []
And you check to say yes. It's not a wizard, or if this is a wizard, I
don't have the impression this is a wizard.
- drakbackup should not says Check you want to eject tape after
backup.
How does drakbackup is going to figure it out ? In fact it will be
better to say : Eject tape after each backup []
- what does Check you want to use a non-rewindable device mean ?
Is drakbackup is going to check that the tape can be rewind or is
drakbackup wil not rewind the tape after the backup and put the otheers
after the last one ?
If second, it should be better to say : rewind tape after each backup
[]

+ Drakbackup - Manual Configuration - When :

1°/ non editable combo
IMHO we should rather have option menus

2°/ can we specify the hour of the backup ?
I know that drakbackup use /etc/crond.* [hourly,daily,weekly,monthly],
but should we have the possibility to specify a special hour ?

+ Drakbackup - Manual Configuration - More Options :

1°/ typo in french
utilser - Utiliser

2°/ lack of help
should have at least a tooltip explaining where are located
.backupignore files.

+ Drakbackup - Configuration with a wizard - storage media selection :
1°/ typo in french :
su - sur Lecteur de Bande

+ MUG ( Mdk Ui Guideline )
You have Cancel - Help - ...
It should be Help - Cancel ?

 - drakboot: configured directly gdm kdm

- can't fit in window at minimum size
- overlap/hide journal
- boot splash configuration should be move to an another widget and
follow the example of boot loader configuration. This will save a lot of
space.
- non editable combo
IMHO we should rather have option menus everywhere possible
- need tooltips explaining boot loader configuration options

 - drakfont: fix #1679 #3673

garbage in file dialog :
Sélectionnez les polices ou dossiers et cliquez sur « Ajouter »

 - drakgw:

if you resize the window of the wizard, you have a bad effect as the top
image keep the same size. The window should not be resizable or the
image should resize itself, or you have a a color mathing the background
of the image to try to hide this a little.

[Cooker] OT: Evolution and IMAP support in cooker

2003-07-24 Thread Jan Ciger

Hello,

Is it just me or is the current Cooker version of Evolution 1.4 so
incredibly buggy ? (Or is Evolution 1.4 working at all ? I do not know,
I am KDE user and didn't use Gnome since long time ago - no flamewars
please).
I am trying to start it under KDE and use it with my IMAP account. It
usually hangs when trying to contact the IMAP server. The server logs
say, that there was a wrong certificate version sent from Evolution (???
I have no personal certs set up, authentication is just with password
over SSL). OK, I kill it, kill bonobo, kill gconf and whatever else
there is, restart, then it pops up the dialogue about a self-signed
certificate. OK, so far so good.
Then, when trying to work with my mail, it likes to freeze in various
stages, e.g. when downloading mail, when trying to exit the program,
sometimes I lose my filters, trying to use LDAP server for contacts
hangs it etc.
Did anybody manage to use Evolution with IMAP ? I switched to IMAP
recently for my e-mail and had to abandon Kmail, because it does not
support automatic running of filters on IMAP folders yet. With my tons
of spam and 800 new mails daily it is huge pain to use.
Right now I am using Mozilla, but that is very slow. I tried to use
Thunderbird as well, but the speed of the GUI is not much improved.
You almost see the widgets redrawing.
I also tried Sylpheed, but it is using old GTK 1.2 and it's
non-antialiased fonts stand out as a sore thumb.
Any suggestions for a reasonable e-mail client with good IMAP support ?

For the record : I am using daily updated Cooker on x86 here, except of
the kernel, that is a bit older version of Danny's multimedia kernel
recompiled with some options I needed.

Now you know why I didn't include them ;-)
No, seriously, the problem with these scripts is that they try to
manipulate the datastore directly instead of through the protocol. Since
the format of the datastore could change, the only recommended way is to
speak to the server with the imap protocol.

Well, after a lot of googling and some hacking, we now have a set of
working scripts, based on these, the original sources from the book,
some versions converted from the tcl version of cyradm to perl-Cyrus,
and some hacking. There is only one important issue, and that is that
messages lose their status flags (ie read messages appear unread).
Ideally, we would like to keep these. Any idea if the imap method would
retain them? Otherwise, I have one more thing to fix, otherwise we are
about ready to migrate the mail on the box in question (though we have
some other tasks to do also before we actually do it).

If this is the method to use, I will package everything up as a seperate
package.

Buchan

After a fresh install of Mandrake9.2beta1 I was unable to get X to start (from
text login-did not set it to start on boot). All I received were the
.Xauthority file messages, there was no flicker to VC7 (I checked it and nothing
was started on it) it just sat at the CLI and did not drop me back to console or
give out any errors. I had to ctrl-c to end the attempt. This happened both
with the default nv driver for my Geforce4 ti4200, and after installing the
nvidia drivers (which required setting IGNORE_CC_MISMATCH to true). I was
unable to find any error messages to give a clue as to what the problem might be.

[Cooker] init/bootscreen German shows no umlauts

this is odd, for two weeks or so the bootmessages are in German alright
but they show question marks instead of umlauts. Also the qotes, like in
pressI for interactive startup, show as I intstead of I.

where do I start looking for the cause?

The firewire driver that loads on the install locks the system, and has been
doing it since the early Mandrake 9 betas...
It is quite frustrating, and well documented on the linux forum at
powernotebooks, and Sager forums.
http://www.powernotebooks.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=238
http://talknotebooks.com/forumdisplay.php3?
s=6af8785c7b415771a6f4e75cdf02c30eforumid=5

the driver it loads ohci1394

I don't understand why Red Hat can get it right, but it takes 2 years for
Mandrake to get it...This isn't the first time I posted this

thnx

PDC20376 driver (was: RE: [Cooker] Re: [CHRPM] kernel-2.4.21.5mdk-1-1mdk)

I tried a similar patch first on my Asus A7V8X w/PDC376 and it didn't
work, you didn't test it? This 20376 identifies itself as a RAID
controller instead of a MISC storage device, and the driver checks on
this so I needed to change a bit more.

With attached patch the driver works. I haven't done real stress tests,
but so far I haven't had any problems. Inserting the pdc-ultra module
makes the system unresponsive for a few seconds, but it doesn't seem to do
any harm. Only tested with a PATA disk.

sd_mod must be inserted to use the disk(s)

after a clean cooker install my XF86Config-4 is missing the resolutions

The config works okay, I wouldn't have noticed the problem, had I not

Also, at installation I wasn't asked about res and depth. It just
installed the xserver and then went ahead with installation.

Is it just me or is the current Cooker version of Evolution 1.4 so
incredibly buggy ? (Or is Evolution 1.4 working at all ? I do not know,
I am KDE user and didn't use Gnome since long time ago - no flamewars

I am trying to start it under KDE and use it with my IMAP account. It
usually hangs when trying to contact the IMAP server. The server logs
say, that there was a wrong certificate version sent from Evolution (???
I have no personal certs set up, authentication is just with password
over SSL). OK, I kill it, kill bonobo, kill gconf and whatever else
there is, restart, then it pops up the dialogue about a self-signed
certificate. OK, so far so good.

Evolution IMAP support is really not optimal.. It is not great in 1.4 but
it was worse in 1.2.. Evo 1.4.4 should be released next week with another
set of fixes (I don't remember if there is IMAP fixes in it)..

It is known from Evolution developers but 1.4 was only a GNOME2 port of
Evolution and they didn't had time to rewrite IMAP backend.. It will be
done for next major release of Evolution.

AFAIK it's just you. I have a comparable setup as far as cooker is
concerned (up-to-date, but with the older mm kernel). I use evolution
both at home (latest cooker) and at work (evolution 1.2.4 on mdk 9.1),
accessing my home e-mail from my IMAP server at home, and my work e-mail
from the IMAP at work (so both installs have both a fast, local,
connection and a slow, remote, one).

The work install uses SSL to connect to the home IMAP, so that's covered
too. And use KDE as desktop environment.

The only problem I have is that at work for very large mailboxes ( 1000
mails) over the connection to my home machine the 'reindexing' process
can take a bit long. I can't blame this on evo, though, just on a slow
connection and slow home server machine.

Well, that and hang on launching a webbrowser bug, but in the latest
cooker version it at least doesn't hang anymore (just doesn't launch the
browser). But that's a known bug.

but I take the sources from the wine cvs about one month ago and compiled
and installed wine from the sources to my cooker installation.

Installation and usage worked just fine for me after following instructions
available in the winehq for the office 2000. (I installed office 2000 and later
servicepacks 1 and 2 for the office)

I only tested word from the office applications thought.

won't this break build dependencies? eg. those packages that depends on
libacl-devel won't build on x86_64 and sparc64 since they will Provide
lib64acl-devel in stead of libacl-devel
Dependent packages BuildRequires: acl-devel.

The problem is that photos are quite big, so we really don't want to
have very many (5-10 at most I guess), so I guess we should vote some
way. I am not sure if the wiki poll plugin is good enough for this ...

I know it is a matter of taste, but I really hate those flower, landscape,
animals and so on on my background. They are too distracting.
Some I like:
http://art.gnome.org/backgrounds/gnome/242.php
http://art.gnome.org/backgrounds/gnome/217.php
http://art.gnome.org/backgrounds/gnome/209.php
http://art.gnome.org/backgrounds/gnome/208.php
http://art.gnome.org/backgrounds/gnome/110.php

Just an idea. What I really would like is to take all backgrounds in
http://art.gnome.org/ and get them packaged. It looks easy, just
grab them from ftp://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/teams/art.gnome.org/backgrounds/
and put all them on a gnome-art-backgrounds package.
There are tons of very nice backgrounds there...
Uhm, they are GNOME specific, but sure there is a similar site for
KDE...

TIA

Uhm, they are GNOME specific, but sure there is a similar site for

IMHO, we don't want to purposely waste space that could be used for
software on duplication of style. I think it would be nice to have
one or two *really* good backgrounds in each style, so maybe:
-landscapes
-flowers/butterflies kind of idea
-textured background (like the ripples)
-flatter background in the style of the current blue background, or
something like the default OSX, or one of the Ximian-type (the sofa stuff)

But, it would of course be nicer to have a bit of a Mandrake slant,
instead of just ripping backgrounds off art.gnome.org or kde-look.org.

The issue is really getting the default look integrated, from lilo,
through bootsplash, dm, desktop splash screen (if applicable), cursor
theme, desktop background, icons, widget theme, wm theme etc etc.

I assume someone at Mandrakesoft handles this, but in the past when I have
tried to contact such people, I have had very abrupt replies ... it would
be nice if people who have the ability (not me! I am no graphist) in the
community could work together with the Mandrakesoft'ers. I know these
aspects are probably sensitive, and Mandrakesoft would want to keep such
things under wraps possibly, but that is why we have GPG (which we trust
for more sensitive things ...).

Of course, it might be nice if someone from the community could step up to
the plate and handle community contributions, and try and start
cooperation with the Mandrakesoft people.

Oh yes, of course, keeping the graphics consistent even through the
distro to the websites may be another idea to continue building brand
awareness (as SuSE and RH do).

Buchan

At least GTK-specific, possibly GTK2-specific. Windows builds don't have

[Cooker] [Bug 3543] [dhcp-client] dhcp does not set domainname

Please note that the 'domainname' command is meant to return the NIS domain
name, not the domain part of the FQDN (that is what dnsdomainname does). See the
man page for 'domainname' for more information on the difference. If you want
the NIS functions to work, use the advanced button in the screen where you set
the root password during installation (and hope the tool becomes available after
installation in the future).

As such, I believe this bug is invalid.

I have tested the output of dnsdomainname on my own machine running cooker
against a ISC DHCP3 server, and it is correct. If you find different, reopen.

It's not a problem of the dhcp server - guaranteed. Tested on two different domains
