any chance you enable AllowSupplementaryGroups in clamd.conf.
it would be useful for using clamd with amavisd-new, because you could

Do you really think it is good to have anything (un)markable on

specifically tied to all graphical environment)? What is doing
bootsplash
on this package list if it is now intended to be unmarkable? Keep it
off the
list and there will be no questions like mine.

What about the case of a server with no X, where the admin *does* want
bootsplash?

What about the case of desktop machine that boots into a remote display
manager? The admin may want a nice graphical boot even though no window
manager is installed on the local machine.

Bootsplash *can* be removed, and there are situations where you might
want to select it or not select it.

You can always 'rpm -e --nodeps bootsplash' if you want.

Yes, thank you for advice (all of them). To be resistant to unwanted,
imposed
changes is certainly good incentive to learn more about Linux beyond
initial
 users GUI experience :)

How about the desktop backgrounds?

Wrong example. Bootsplash is in no way _necessary_ part of boot process.

But it isn't (currently) required by any package used only in the boot
process, it's only required by the desktop packages, so that the typical
home machine gets it by default (even on upgrades from a machine which
didn't have it).

There is IMHO no any clear aim to make it mandatory, except of course
writing
Mandrake 9.2 on it (but it is written also during text boot).

I don't know the answer to that, ask the Mandrake interface team (if
they will give you an answer).

I have nothing against bootsplash if somebody likes it. But I have
objection
to have bootsplash forcefully imposed on all possible Mandrake users
 including me.

The use of bootsplash isn't forced on you. Only the installation of it.

Even to get rid of it I now need to install it in the first
place (this improvement is true only starting with 9.2). Small step
in the
same direction as so painfully known program called IE. Mind you I
left
Windows world partly because of such mandatory features imposed
against my
 own will.

So, removing IE from Windows 98SE is a 30 second job? I don't think so.

And don't tell me that this long dependancy chain you presented
 cannot be corrected ;-)

Of course it can, but the question (as I said before) is whether
Mandrake considers it a feature or not. Since it was *added* for 9.2, I
would guess so.

binary, maybe initscripts should depend on bootsplash instead? Then we can
have it on servers too ;-).

Actually you might be surprised how many Linux servers (including
Mandrakes)
have full-scale graphical environment installed and in use nowadays.
Memory
is cheap and CPU's are affordable. Admin's time and good perception of
overall situation is much more expensive.

But many admins have bad habits (logging in to X as root for example,
not securing X correctly when using it on a server). GUI administration
can be done just as easily, and probably more securely, without X
installed on the server, using X tunneled over SSH.

And a lot of administration tasks can be done much more efficiently
without a GUI environment (eg via scripting) than with one.

About the only GUI tool we use on our servers is diskdrake, because it
is convenient to use to resize LVM volumes.

Buchan

[Cooker] Kernel 2.6 cutover?

2003-11-14 Thread Robert Fox
Just wondering, what is the rough development plan for Cooker?
Specifically, at what stage will the kernel 2.6 series be the focus and
the 2.4 go to contribs?

Is it a stated goal that the 2.6 kernel (not withstanding and critical
show stopper) will be the main kernel for Mandrake 10.0 (due roughly
next March?)

The sooner we get kernel 2.6 into the mainstream Cooker - the more
testing will take place . . . or is it too soon?

Thanks,

Specifically, at what stage will the kernel 2.6 series be the focus and
 the 2.4 go to contribs?

a diff -u between /usr/lib/libDrakX/timezone of 9.1 and cooker give me
 this ( I remove specific ntp lines ) :

does your problem go away when this patch is reversed ?

OK, but IMO it should be available as a replacement of the main kernel
with all the added features fully functional, not as it current availability
and in mdk9.2

there are a lot of core changes to be done, and i think it's really time to

No. Just finishing a 2.6 kernel code (based on the one in contribs),
and a 2.4.23-rc1 kernel.

I don't have a crystal ball, but I guess that for 10.0, 2.6 is not

similar to 8.0, where we used 2.2 and 2.4. Here with 2.4 and 2.6.

robert Just wondering, what is the rough development plan for Cooker?
robert Specifically, at what stage will the kernel 2.6 series be the

No. Just finishing a 2.6 kernel code (based on the one in contribs),
 and a 2.4.23-rc1 kernel.

could you publish your 2.6 work somewhere on the net? :-)

I don't have a crystal ball, but I guess that for 10.0, 2.6 is not
going to be ready for everybody. My guess is that situation will be
similar to 8.0, where we used 2.2 and 2.4. Here with 2.4 and 2.6.
For some configurations 2.4 will be better, for other 2.6.

robert Is it a stated goal that the 2.6 kernel (not withstanding and
 critical
robert show stopper) will be the main kernel for Mandrake 10.0 (due
 roughly
 robert next March?)

As I stated, I don't think that it will be ready, but it will be an
 option for sure.

don't we need device-mapper in the main kernel then ?-)
(of course Luca's lvm packages changes should also go in main too )

robert The sooner we get kernel 2.6 into the mainstream Cooker - the more
robert testing will take place . . . or is it too soon?

I hoped to have it ready this week, but bttv + new alsa + new
grsecurity + in 2.4.23-rc1 took all my energies. I hope that it
will be there during next week.

have you included packet writing ?

My opinion would be we can have 2.6 kernel for workstation installs and
2.4 for server installs. I have been running 2.6 on my laptop and every
thing is working so far, save for the PCMCIA. I have not done any
investigation into that yet. I would like to have an RC or beta type

[Cooker] Sony Clié, Palm, Handspring, PalmOS users, please read

2003-11-14 Thread Frederic Crozat
Folks,

I'm trying to fix bug #3381, which is a problem with some Palm/Clié/other
PalmOS PDA which requires using /dev/usb/tts/0 instead of /dev/usb/tts/1

Currently, I only know of 3 problematic models :
-Sony Clié N770C/E (Vendor=054c ProdID=0060)
-Palm m130 (Vendor=0830 ProdID=0050)
-Sony Clié 320 (Vendor=054c, ProdID unknown)

So, if you have another PDA which requires this kind of changes, please,
post it here, with Vendor and ProdID (check /proc/bus/usb/devices after
pressing hotsync)

If you have a PalmOS PDA which does NOT requires this but which is not
correctly described in /usr/share/doc/pilot-link-0.11.8/README.usb (it
doesn't have USBx info, it is missing for the list, etc..), please, post
here too.

I'd like to get the pilot-link up to date to be sure /dev/pilot is always
symlinked to the correct usb serial devices.

If you have a Palm Tungsten T3, I know they don't work yet but I plan to
fix that as soon as I receive mine :)) (probably next week, replacing my
Clié N770C/E).

Thanks for your cooperation :)

What, do we want:
1)Paying customers to have worse products than freeloaders?
2)Users to keep their vulnerable firmware?

The best solution for everyone is for users to update their firmware.

The best time for them to wipe their firmware (if you can qualify it as
best, maybe least-bad) is now, when there are documented fixes for it.

Hopefully users caught by the same problem on other Linux kernels
(Gentoo America's Army CD, some other Gentoo releases, custom-patched
etc etc) will find the solution too (and be able to revive their hardware).

Buchan

There is no need for it now since the LG released updates for their

It would be nice if Mandrake would release updated iso-s for

btw does this mean that the updated kernel is not necessary ?
Are there any changes in the updated kernel except the packet writing
being left out ?

Re[2]: [Cooker] iptables nat not working in 9.2

2003-11-14 Thread Galileo
MP It's because the mandrake kernel uses patches from patch-o-matic. In 9.1 this
MP didn't give problems, but in 9.2 it apparently did (hum, it was even a
MP netfilter faq).

How about TTL target patch. There is support for ttl matches, and also
iptables libs in 9.2 support TTL target but there is no TTL target patch in
kernel. It is seldom used but its nice since with it traceroute
doesn't show your firewall :)))

Simply adding a grabby thing won't work. When the scrollbar is very small,
the grabby thing wouldn't be visible.

The background needs to be darkened and the gradient removed.

I think the -10 to -18 update had some other security fixes in it. I tried to
look it up on Mandrakesecure.net but the webserver looks like it is having
trouble connecting to the SQL server right now.

The update to -21 removed the packet writing but also included the -18
security fixes. I would say that if you can't get -18, you should be on -21
because of the security issues.

Actually, it looks like it becomes unresponsive as soon as another window is
opened. For example, when the toolbar opens, the main window stops
responding. If I select the option that causes the tool buttons to be
displayed in the main window, everything is ok until I try to attach to a
process, after which the main window becomes unresponsive.

I recently upgraded to Mandrake 9.2, and have been having a hard time
getting ddd to work correctly. The symptom is, I start ddd, I close the
message of the day window, and ddd is unresponsive - it refreshes correctly if
I drag a window over the top of it, but I can't click any menu items or type
in any commands. I found that if I disable the message of the day window, the
problem goes away, so I am now able to work, but I wanted to let you know
about the problem. I tried comping ddd 3.3.7 from source and it had the same
problem; I was unable to build ddd 3.3.8, so the problem may be resolved
there. Thanks for providing the package!

Sorry, I confess that I didn't RTFM. I didn't realize that I should just
be using 'autoconf', with appropriate files or environment variables.
I thought that since there were mulitple executables of autoconf*, the one
with the version number I wanted was the one to execute.

There's seems to have a problem with timedrake/draketime.

Indeed, I set my cooker box to sync to my local ntp server. The problem is that
my cooker box always want to have 1 hour less than my server. All the others 9.1
box are synced correctly, only my cooker box removeone hour.I set timezone for
Europe/Paris, but nothing, try to say that my systemtime was GMT ( and not ),
and still nothing.
If i launch ntpdate when my system have the right time, ntpdate remove one hour
and I end up with one hour difference with my local ntp server

+ Note 1 :
- on my cooker box, date display this :

To reproduce this bug:

1) in KDE, right click on any file; for this purpose let's use an *.avi file,
2) choose Open with, and then, other...,
3) choose an aplication to open this file with; for this purpose, we would
choose /usr/bin/mplayer -vo sdl.
4) from now on, any double-clicked avi-movie would be open with
/usr/bin/mplayer -vo sdl, which is perfectly OK.
5) log out from KDE, and then log in again. Your carefully crafted file
associations are lost, as if you've never done steps 1-4 above... :(

[Cooker] [Bug 6360] [mozilla] New: triggers remove links to flashplayer (and other plugins) when mozilla is updated

2003-11-14 Thread [mr]
http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=6360

Summary: triggers remove links to flashplayer (and other plugins)
when mozilla is updated
   Product: mozilla
   Version: 1.4-17mdk
  Platform: PC
OS/Version: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: P2
 Component: packaging
AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

When mozilla package is updated, the triggers of the package remove links from
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins, e.g. the one for flashplayer.

Looking at the triggers one sees:

%triggerun ...
[ $1 = 0 ] || exit 0

This is probably wrong, it should be:

%triggerun ...
[ $2 = 0 ] || exit 0
^

This is also in the examples of /usr/share/doc/rpm-4.2/triggers and makes more
sense, because we care about what happens with the target package ($2), not our
package ($1).

[Cooker] [Bug 6361] [mozilla-firebird] New: history sidebar is empty

2003-11-14 Thread [oliv.blin]
http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=6361

   Summary: history sidebar is empty
   Product: mozilla-firebird
   Version: 0.7-1mdk
  Platform: PC
OS/Version: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: P2
 Component: mozilla-firebird
AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

My MozillaFirebird history sidebar is always empty with the cooker package, I
tried with a blank profile, same result.
The bug is definitly in this package, I've tried with official binaries from
mozilla.org, it works fine (but fonts are really ugly).
It seems that cooker's MozillaFirebird writes history in
$HOME/.phoenix/default/weirdname/history.txt while it tries to read it in
$HOME/.phoenix/default/weirdname/history.dat (that's where history is written by
official binaries).

Well, it works for you, but I don't think you can close this bug.
It doesn't work while I've a blank profile and a correct mozilla-firebird install.
strace shows me that MozillaFirebird-bin tries to write history to history.txt,
is that normal ?
What more can I do to trace this bug ?

conifgure.ac's using the new style AC_INIT and AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE macros produce
wrong output.

A good example is ayttm or esmtp. To replicate get ayttm 0.4.4, run ./gen.

ayttm has:
AC_INIT(Ayttm, 0.4.4, [EMAIL PROTECTED])
AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE([1.6 dist-bzip2 dist-zip])
in its configure.ac.

Which produces the following output in the configure script:
PACKAGE=1.6 dist-bzip2 dist-zip

VERSION=

instead of:
 PACKAGE=ayttm
 VERSION=0.4.4

Might not actually be a bug. It's happening because I'm getting the 1.4
aclocal. In the past you could either have 1.7 or 1.4 installed but not both.
It's now using alternatives but 1.4 is the default. So now packages that
required 1.6 or 1.7 and assumed that they were getting it on the basis of the
package being installed need to also use the version specific path. I'm not
sure there's a fix except to write a wrapper that figures out which automake
version you really want. But I'm not sure there's a good way to do that. I'll
leave it as new in case someone wants to figure out a better way to deal with this.

Dumb Date Format Question?

2003-11-14 Thread Craig Miller
Hi All,

Sorry to bother the list on this one, but I haven't figured out what I
did (and how to un do it) on my date format.

Where does one set the location for Mandrake. It was US, and I
foolishly set it to Montreal. I say foolishly, because all my dates are
not in Canadian format (dd/mm/yy) and I would like them to go back to US
format (mm/dd/yy). This date format shows up in Apps such as Mozilla
OpenOffice.

What does one use in Mandrake to set the date format back to US format?

TIA,

Craig...
