[Cooker] [Bug 6118] [mdkkdm] How about fast user switching?

2003-10-09 Thread [greeneg]

--- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-10-10 03:17 ---
Buchan had posted a solution to this on the Cooker ML a while back. It's a
hidden feature in kwin that is trivial to enable. It only requires that the X
server have a few reserved vts to work. Check the archives for the solution.

Hello,

It would be nice to have a user switch feature which does not force me to shut down
programs. For example if my mother must check mail, I don't want to log off (and shut
down
xmule).

Currently I have to

lock the session
CTRL+ALT+f2
startx -- :1

But this does not work fully: I have many resource locking problems, e.g. the sound
does not
work, and the tv card doesn't either.

Also, it is not apparent enough. 99% of the users don't know it is possible.

Windows XP does this since years, and I heard SUSE 8.2 does it too.
cheers!

While this may be a charged political issue for some, this is not a bug nor
would it be in the opensource spirit to remove this flag (the flag of a
democratic nation.)

This is not a MDK issue. This is the behaviour as designed by KDE's kwin. Kwin needs
patched to change this behaviour. Please post this bug/wishlist item on kde's
bugzilla at http://bugs.kde.org/

Actually Thierry, this is talking about the KDE Control Centre Linux Kernel
Configurator. So
I think this bug should be passed off to the kdebase package instead of drakconf.

Question to James Smyth: do you have the kernel sources installed? Via RPM or source
from www.kernel.org? If so, which version?

yes, I am using teh ati.2 drivers from contribs. I didn't know that you had to use a
module for dri from the gatos project. I'll give that a try and find out if it fixes
things...

After reinstalling the most recent XFree86 and unistalling ati.2, DRI works again.

However, the packager of the ati.2 drivers NEEDS to make the fact known that to get
DRI working with the gatos.sf.net drivers, you need the drm kernel module that is in
the gatos CVS repository.

I'm marking this as an INVALID bug due to it not being a problem of the main
distribution of XFree86.

The DRM kernel module in the stock Mandrake kernels doesn't have the correct
version of the DRI module needed by the ati.2 gatos modules. The one used by the
kernel is version 1.7.0, the gatos drivers need the ones off their website (v1.100.0)
to work.

This is not a KDE bug, this is caused by a problem with XFree86's radeon drm module.
As a work around until flepied adds the patchs in CVS to the XFree86 packages,
disable DRI.

This is a duplicate of bug #1160

If you check your XFree86.0.log you will find that teh reason for this is the DRI
modules in the kernel ar too old atm the moment, thus no 3d Acceleration. The X
server sees a 1.7.0 radeon.o but wants 1.100.0 this is a kernel problem.

[Cooker] [Bug 1160] [XFree86] ATI All In Wonder Radeon 7500 (Radeon QW) DRI fails when X11 starts

2003-03-10 Thread greeneg

--- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-03-10 18:42 ---
unfortunately, I can't check if it's still applicable since the kernel module for the
radeon
is, according to my XFree86.0.log, an incorrect version.

it sees a 1.7.0. It wants 1.100.0.

My XFree86.0.log is attached to verify.

XFree freezes with black screen on logout or shutdown from KDE or Gnome on
Radeon Mobility 7500C (ATI Radeon Mobility M7 LW (AGP)) on a Sony Vaio
PCG-GRV550. Commenting module DRI and DRI section in XF86Config-4 allows logout
or shutdown to work. Shutdown from command line works. Stoping dm service works.
This problem existed in Beta 2 and Beta 3 of Mandrake 9.1.
