RE: [Cooker] [Holy Minimal Install]

2001-08-06 Thread Adamson, Keith

Hi Pixel

I tried urpmi once a will ago but at the time it
was broken for some reason I can't remember (I
think it had something to do with libs) ...
so I hacked these two shell scripts together
because I knew they would always work if rpm
worked. I should try urpmi again.

Try these two scripts attached -- the output is
treed (gives you a good view of what requires what)
and interactive. Maybe it'll give you some
ideas - maybe not?

Keith

Hi

I prefer to use MandrakUpdateRobot and it need libcurl.so.1. May we have MUR

revamped for existing libraries?

RE: [Cooker] About the text-based version of MandrakeUpdate

2001-01-24 Thread Adamson, Keith

I'm sorry ... I should have been more specific. MandrakeUpdate
doesn't work behind my companies ftp firewall and I think the
problem is that MandrakeUpdate uses passive mode ftp transfers
which are not supported by the firewall. I can't see any
selection for turning off ftp passive mode in MandrakeUpdate.

Also, I have seen other firewalls that need some sort of user
account and password string to gain access through the ftp
firewall. Although I don't need this myself I have seen other
ftp clients that support this type authentication.

Presently I work around the problem by mirroring to a local
directory using wget's ftp transfer because it supports
non-passive mode ftp transfer. I then use a short script to
prune the old packages out of the mirror. I can't use rsync
--delete because the needed port is not open though the
firewall.

Keith,

They do. Yesterday I used MandrakeUpdate and today I'm running
mdk-update.pl (as I write this). Both work fine from my Mandrake 7.2 +
updates + (bits of) cooker machine on my 192.168.1.x LAN connected thru my
firewall machine via dial-up.

By the way, I use a cool little tool called netmasq for setting my firewall
rules. It's a shell script with simple, easy to use config
files. Available from http://pulse.cantonpl.org/carl/netmasq.html, if
you're interested.

RE: [Cooker] About the text-based version of MandrakeUpdate

Could you make both MandrakeUpdate and the new text tool work from
behind a firewall?

Okay, so people want it (is that your _final_ answer?) :-) Basically,
the program will work almost exactly the same as MandrakeUpdate GUI
tool, but with the following similarity and differences:

Similarity:
==
- It will put the downloadeded packages in /var/cache/grpmi
- It will use http://www.linux-mandrake.com/mirror.lists file as a
reference (by Default - it's configurable). Then it will goes through
from the very beginning of it.
- Usual stuff, like verifying the signature of the RPM.

Differences:
==
- It will _probably_ use libcurl so that the program can be finished
before Mandrake 8.0 is out (when is the schedule?). Making yet another
FTP client for a specific purpose will probably make the development
time a bit longer.
- I will probably add a feature to do the following:
1) Check if there's any modified file from the previous RPM package in
directory /etc and /var
2) If there are modified file(s) in /etc /var from that RPM package,
then the modified file will be kept temporarily to a temporary
directory, then it will overwrite the file (only in /etc and /var) of
the newer package. Thus, your old config won't be overwritten.
3) If it's a kernel package, --- hmmm --- Well, here it goes:
 a) Check if the config from /usr/src/linux/.config exists or not
   i) If /usr/src/linux/.config exists, then recompile the kernel
automatically, and after that mail to the root user about the
compilation status (whether compile is okay or compile is broken). If
compile is broken then don't do lilo/grub.
ii) If /usr/src/linux/.config doesn't exist, it means that the kernel
was the same as supplied by kernel by default, and thus there's no
recompilation, just do "lilo"

Addition:

- It will be put into /etc/cron.weekly task (that way people won't
overload the FTP server - but you still can set it to /etc/cron.daily
or even /etc/cron.hourly)

I will post a more detail in a few days, and I will probably start
working on it soon.
PS# I'm posting here at 00:30 when I'm so sleepy, so if I make any
technical mistakes or you want to add anything or comment, please post
it.

Thanks,
Prana

[Cooker] cooker install

2001-01-12 Thread Adamson, Keith

Seems during the graphical install of X config the X
server rpm is assumed under /Mandrake/RPM ... you
should change to the correct location (given during
the hd.img install query) or create a "ln -s" from the
correct location to /Mandrake/RPM
