[Cooker] What can be done about Java Web Start if anything ?

2003-08-14 Thread Allen Francom

I know this is not a Mandrake issue, but Sun's Java,
particularly the Java Web Start, is a small pain to
get setup initially.

It requires a manual unzipping of the web start
parts, and some additional setting of .so plug-in,
and also browser mime-type.

Maybe in one of the configuration thingies this
can be addressed to one degree or another since
although Sun didn't nail it good, there is enough
to grab ahold of and make work right in somewhat
of an automated fashion user friendlier.

?

Sincerely,

Allen Francom

[Cooker] fyi kernel / install cd people re: toshiba laptop

2003-06-04 Thread Allen Francom

I got a good deal on a toshiba 2435 so I didn't get too picky.

Boy, what an experience getting it installed.

This may already be a well known issue, and then maybe not
so I figured better safe to say something.

The install kernel alt1 was able to complete an install
and zap the preinstalled MS Windows XP Home.

None of the other kernels would work, nor would the machine
boot after the install completed.

I had to make a custom bood CD and go in and rebuild a
kernel, then rerun lilo.

BUT THAT IS ALL I'VE HAD TO DO. Everything else works perfect.

I thought it was acpi or apic, now I'm thinking it is something
about PCMCIA. Not sure yet.

Let me know if you would like more info while my machine is
still only kernel-custom mdk 9.1. I intent to find the exact kernel
options at fault.
