One thing to think about in some businesses / organisations is that the amount of e-mail recieved by an individual is monitored. Hence it is impossible for some to subscibe to a list like cooker at work because the volume is truly massive. Hence if you want to include the folks who use Mandrake as a server at work, for instance, splitting the lists along sensible lines would remove that particular barrier. Best wishes, Damon

I guess the installer could see that if only one language is specified at the start, perhaps the spell-checking will be auto-installed based on locale? If there is more than one language selected, maybe the installer could explicitly suggest to the user to check out which dictionary they want to install? I suggest this thinking of someone who is somewhat ignorant and new and thinking "my gosh the spell-checking in the word processor doesn't even work and the checkbox to add it is grayed out"... they won't necessarily have the skill to know how to fix it (even though it is actually quite easy when you know where to look). But of course I agree with you that installing stuff without giving the user control is also potentially highly annoying. For instance the ViaVoice package IBM made for 7.2 / 8.0 powerpack: if you wish to run the US English version, you must set your locale as en_US even if you don't want to, because the code is set up so that if you run anything other than en_US, it just refuses to run. I think some Linux novices within IBM coded that one ;-) Kind regards, Damon

[Cooker] Any ypbind & nfs users out there run into problems?
Hi, I'm having problems here with accessing an NFS share where I'm a member of the group but not the owner, and I'm not sure if it is a configuration problem or what. I posted to the expert list yesterday but got no answer. I'm running 9.0 final as a client to a Debian 3.0 server with 2.4.19 kernel. I'm authenticating with ypbind, and access files across the network with nfs. IP is gained via DHCP. This worked very well with 8.2, and still does with another 8.2 machine on the network. The problem: I do not have permission to view files on the nfs mount, despite me being a member of the group. I can view a file where I am the owner, i.e. my home directory on the server. Group and user IDs match on both the client and the server. I see this in dolphin's syslog: ypbind: ypbind startup succeeded On the server's syslog I see this: dhcpd: Added new forward map from devnet.int.dev-zone.org to 10.0.20.55 dhcpd: added reverse map from 55.20.0.10.in-addr.arpa to devnet.int.dev-zone.org dhcpd: DHCPREQUEST for 10.0.20.55 from 00:e0:4c:e0:6b:e4 via eth0 dhcpd: DHCPACK on 10.0.20.55 to 00:e0:4c:e0:6b:e4 via eth0 dhcpd: Added new forward map from devnet.int.dev-zone.org to 10.0.20.55 dhcpd: added reverse map from 55.20.0.10.in-addr.arpa to devnet.int.dev-zone.org dhcpd: DHCPREQUEST for 10.0.20.55 from 00:e0:4c:e0:6b:e4 via eth0 dhcpd: DHCPACK on 10.0.20.55 to 00:e0:4c:e0:6b:e4 via eth0 rpc.mountd: authenticated mount request from devnet.int.dev-zone.org:994 for /net-drive (/net-drive) I cannot see any other relevant messages in the logs. This is in my /etc/yp.conf: domain int.dev-zone.org server 10.0.20.127 ypserver 10.0.20.127 This is exactly the same setup as the 8.2 machine. It was setup using webmin. I do note that there is a difference in the organisation of /var/lib/nfs between 8.2 and 9.0. Any suggestions as what to check? Many thanks! Damon

[Cooker] /home wiped by new RC3 install
Hi, I've never had this happen before. Just did an expert install of the "new" RC3 using the hd.img and packages in /home, and when I booted for the first time, I discovered that /home/damon had been wiped clean :-( A possible cause: I did an install onto a machine that previously did its authentication via ypbind. For this install I chose local, since I wanted a local authentication for root. I was going to convert it to ypbind after install. A second possible cause: I rm -rf .gnome*, .kde*, and .nautilus* A third possible cause: I did not run the first time wizard. I didn't see anything unusual in the logs. I'll e-mail them to Pixel anyway. I'm especially puzzled since all the packages used to install were in /home/damon Damon

[Cooker] RC2: gabber overwrites archive files, not appends
Hi, Gabber should be appending to it's archive, not overwriting what ever is there. RC2 Gabber keeps only the archive of the most recent chat, instead of accumulating them by adding to the file as in 8.2 and 8.1 etc. thanks! Damon

In beta 4 this could be configured using sndconfig, but in both RC1 and RC2 this does not work. sndconfig reports it as unrecognized, when in fact it can run in sound blaster emulation mode without problems. But there is no choice to configure this option. Thanks, Damon
[Cooker] RC2: Deadly conflict between NFS install and shorewall
Greetings Mandrake, With RC2 cannot install from NFS when the NFS server has had Internet connection sharing configured. The server almost freezes handling the request. Everything is set to default install apart from setting up NFS sharing, i.e. no hand tinkering to shorewall or dhcp. My LAN details: "Server": two network cards, one to LAN (192.168.0.1), and other to cable modem (static IP) Client: one network card, boot from network.img on floppy Since DHCP was configured, the client got its IP via that. When client goes to bring up the NFS connection, the server's mouse can barely move because of the load. Server back to normal when the client powered off. I tried disabling the connection sharing and stopping the shorewall service, but this appeared to have little effect (got the same condition). Well perhaps this is not "deadly" but it seems serious *grin* Some messages from /var/log/messages: Sep 10 09:47:47 damon kernel: Shorewall:net2all:DROP:IN=eth1 OUT= MAC=00:50:fc:31:28:55:00:b0:8e:42:74:e3:08:00 SRC=24.128.196.93 DST=202.0.35.68 LEN=60 TOS=0x10 PREC=0x20 TTL=44 ID=3947 DF PROTO=TCP SPT=1335 DPT=21 WINDOW=32120 RES=0x00 SYN URGP=0 Sep 10 09:47:56 damon kernel: Shorewall:net2all:DROP:IN=eth1 OUT= MAC=00:50:fc:31:28:55:00:b0:8e:42:74:e3:08:00 SRC=24.128.196.93 DST=202.0.35.68 LEN=60 TOS=0x10 PREC=0x20 TTL=44 ID=5912 DF PROTO=TCP SPT=1335 DPT=21 WINDOW=32120 RES=0x00 SYN URGP=0 Sep 10 09:49:01 damon rwhod[2750]: sendto(192.168.0.255): Operation not permitted Sep 10 09:52:01 damon rwhod[2750]: sendto(192.168.0.255): Operation not permitted Sep 10 09:55:01 damon rwhod[2750]: sendto(192.168.0.255): Operation not permitted Sep 10 09:58:01 damon rwhod[2750]: sendto(192.168.0.255): Operation not permitted Sep 10 10:01:00 damon CROND[3851]: (root) CMD (nice -n 19 run-parts /etc/cron.hourly) Sep 10 10:01:01 damon rwhod[2750]: sendto(192.168.0.255): Operation not permitted Sep 10 10:01:18 damon kernel: Shorewall:net2all:DROP:IN=eth1 OUT= MAC=00:50:fc:31:28:55:00:b0:8e:42:74:e3:08:00 SRC=24.200.226.221 DST=202.0.35.68 LEN=60 TOS=0x10 PREC=0x00 TTL=48 ID=40619 DF PROTO=TCP SPT=2129 DPT=21 WINDOW=5840 RES=0x00 SYN URGP=0 Sep 10 10:02:16 damon gconfd (root-3865): starting (version 1.2.1), pid 3865 user 'root' Sep 10 10:02:16 damon gconfd (root-3865): Resolved address "xml:readonly:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.mandatory" to a read-only config source at position 0 Sep 10 10:02:16 damon gconfd (root-3865): Resolved address "xml:readwrite:/root/.gconf" to a writable config source at position 1 Sep 10 10:02:16 damon gconfd (root-3865): Resolved address "xml:readonly:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults" to a read-only config source at position 2 Sep 10 10:03:44 damon portmap[3964]: cannot bind udp: Address already in use Sep 10 10:03:44 damon portmap: portmap startup succeeded Sep 10 10:04:01 damon rwhod[2750]: sendto(192.168.0.255): Operation not permitted Sep 10 10:05:02 damon exportfs[3987]: No 'sync' or 'async' option specified for export "192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0:/home/damon/mdk9rc2". Hi David, You don't need a CD burner; you can mount the ISO itself while it's sitting on your hard drive, copy the files, and do a hard drive install. Obviously a space muncher though :-) Damon
[Cooker] sound (or unsound) feedback from a linux sound novice
Even though I am by no means an expert on sound in Linux, I would like to give some feedback all the same. I hope it will be of some use, to give you an idea of what a general novice might need prompting to try to do. Sound output worked right away using Release candidate one. However, I was not able to get ViaVoice Dictation for Linux to operate (the version that was included with power packs 7.2 and 8.0, using the Sun JRE instead of the IBM JRE), because it was not able to detect recorded sound through the main application. Strangely, it was able to record some kind of speech using its audio setup wizard, even that the main application would not work. Even more strangely, sound output from the audio setup wizard sounded like something short, nasty, and full of static. I'm running a Sound Blaster live. This is the relevant output of lspci: 00:11.0 Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB Live! EMU10k1 (rev 03) So I figured the solution was to start draksound and see what choices it would present. It mentioned that there was a choice between Alsa and OSS drivers. However, it presented two choices in the drop down box: audigy() and emu10k1(). It didn't mention anything in these choices about Alsa or OSS, which I found confusing. When I tried to select emu10k1, I noticed on the command line output that the existing mixer could not be shut down, because another process was using it (it turned out to be the Gnome mixer). It seemed to be indicating that Alsa's mixer was running. So I logged out of gnome, hit ctrl-alt-f1, and logged in as root. I ran draksound from the command line, chose the second option, logged out, hit ctrl-alt-f7, and logged back into Gnome. I assume it must have loaded a different driver, because ViaVoice Dictation for Linux now works (luckily for me). Perhaps there is a bug with recording under Alsa, or else ViaVoice Dictation is just not compatible with it. Anyway, sound now works for what I need it to do. I'm a bit concerned that draksound needs a warning of some sort to say that maybe it should be run when not the user is logged into a gui and that all applications using sound shout not be running (and perhaps explain how to do that for a newbie). I hope this has been of minor assistance in making the version of Mandrake the best yet! Thanks very much. Damon

[Cooker] 9b1: Installer incorrectly configuring urpmi?
Hi, I installed 9.0 beta 1 from hard drive files. urpmi was not set up correctly: it appears to be missing a forward slash when specifying the location on the hard drive. Thanks, Damon
[Cooker] 9b1: Gnome Calculator missing from applications menu
It is contained in the Gnome menu / Accessories, but not in Applications / Sciences / Mathematics. One other thing: maybe it's been way too long since I studied mathematics, but I can't see a square-root function in KCalc... puzzling. Damon

No I don't see anything in the logs. The client shows the MAC address. The 1st error message is TX Setup timeout, then it says it is looking for the dhcp server, then on the next line . I guess it > > got that from my static IP address, which ends in another number, not 1. You've got a few major problems there: "option routers" is presumably picked up from your default gateway setting. I'm guessing you've got two network cards: one internal and one external (or possibly a dial-up link etc in place of the external). Yes you are correct, I have two network cards (one internal, the other to my cable modem). If so, then you need to set "option routers 192.168.0.x;" so that clients on the internal network use your box as the default gateway. You will also need to set up IP forwarding, iptables etc. I didn't set up those other things yet. But I did change "routers" to 192.168.0.1 (the IP address of this machine internally). This is a change from what the GUI suggested. You also need to set "option domain-name-servers" to something reasonable. Since 127.0.0.1 appears in your list, I'm assuming that your box is running a DNS server, in which case probably best to set "option domain-name-servers 192.168.0.x;" as with "option routers" (note - no-one else can access your box as 127.0.0.1! :-) Ok, I just left the DNS of the ISP I use, since as far as I know I don't run DNS (maybe that was an artifact on the internet connection sharing I had earlier set up?). > > This is the contents of /etc/dhcpd.conf.etherboot.clients: > > host jennifer { > > hardware ethernet 00:80:AD:77:A3:9B; > > fixed-address 192.168.0.2; > > filename"boot-tulip.2.4.19-7mdk.nbi"; > > } > Looks resaonable. If you're using Etherboot 5.0.7 or greater, then the declaration is unnecessary; 5.0.7+ will automatically pick up the correct .nbi image file based on the PCI ID of the network card that they boot from. Ok, but that is what the GUI setup based on the values I gave. I didn't change that. Unfortunately the client can still not boot. It get's TX setup timeout, then .TX timeout! BTW if this is better discussed off list (since I'm clearly not an expert on these matters and this discussion may be of no use to the developers), then that's fine with me :-) Damon
[Cooker] cannot configure AD1816 ISA soundcard
Hi, Before in beta4 if you ran sndconfig it was at least possible to tell it that the soundblaster driver could be used. Now that option has been removed. At least, when you click Ok after it says that the detected card does not have a driver, the program appears to exit abnormally (Ctl-C kills it). Damon
[Cooker] Hard freeze upon nfs access from nfs install
Hi, My Mdk 9 RC1 locks up when I try to do an nfs install via dhcp from another machine via boot floopy. DHCP correctly assigns and IP to the client. When the nfs path is specified on the client installer (and enter is hit), the server locks up. (Just to be clear, the server is running RC1, and the client installer is also RC1). This may have something to do with the fact that I uninstalled clusternfs, and reinstalled nfs-utils when I was not able to get the terminal server packages working. Furthermore, I also used the internet connection sharing wizard after I had removed the terminal server package. This installing and uninstalling of packages like nfs and clusternfs may have messed something up, but I don't expect hard lock ups :-) There is nothing in the messages log file to indicate the problem. The contents of /etc/exports is: #/etc/exports - generated by drakTermServ #/ (ro,all_squash) #/home 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0(rw,root_squash) /home/damon/export *(ro) Thanks, Damon

Re: [Cooker] RC1: Terminal server install routine broken
Hi again, After creating symbolic links in /lib/modules/ to 2.4.19-7mdk, I was able to install terminal server. However I cannot get it to run. There are two problems: 1. When clicking on "Start Server" from the config GUI I get: Starting dhcpd: Starting ClusterNFS (rpc.mountd): [ OK ] Starting ClusterNFS (rpc.nfsd): [ FAIL ] 2. Perhaps related, the client machine cannot find the DHCP server and says ".TX Timeout!" when trying to boot. These are the contents of the export config files: exports.terminal-server: # Exports file for diskless workstation support using ClusterNFS # $Id: exports,v 1.1 2002/04/24 14:17:50 mcb30 Exp $ / (ro,all_squash) exports.mdkTS: #/etc/exports - generated by drakTermServ / (ro,all_squash) /home 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0(rw,root_squash) #/etc/exports - generated by drakTermServ / (ro,all_squash) /home /(rw,root_squash) Thanks, Damon
[Cooker] RC1: Terminal server install routine broken
Hi Mandrake, I'd very much like to test terminal server, but it won't install. It seems to be looking for old kernel modules, e.g.: Building NBIs for module set yellowfin /lib/modules/2.4.18-21mdk/kernel/drivers/net/yellowfin.o.gz: No such file or directory /lib/modules/2.4.18-21mdk/kernel/net/sunrpc/sunrpc.o.gz: No such file or directory /lib/modules/2.4.18-21mdk/kernel/fs/lockd/lockd.o.gz: No such file or directory /lib/modules/2.4.18-21mdk/kernel/fs/nfs/nfs.o.gz: No such file or directory /lib/modules/2.4.18-21mdk/kernel/net/packet/af_packet.o.gz: No such file or directory /lib/modules/2.4.18-6mdk/kernel/drivers/net/yellowfin.o.gz: No such file or directory /lib/modules/2.4.18-6mdk/kernel/net/sunrpc/sunrpc.o.gz: No such file or directory /lib/modules/2.4.18-6mdk/kernel/fs/lockd/lockd.o.gz: No such file or directory /lib/modules/2.4.18-6mdk/kernel/fs/nfs/nfs.o.gz: No such file or directory /lib/modules/2.4.18-6mdk/kernel/net/packet/af_packet.o.gz: No such file or directory /lib/modules/2.4.19-5mdk/kernel/drivers/net/yellowfin.o.gz: No such file or directory /lib/modules/2.4.19-5mdk/kernel/net/sunrpc/sunrpc.o.gz: No such file or directory /lib/modules/2.4.19-5mdk/kernel/fs/lockd/lockd.o.gz: No such file or directory /lib/modules/2.4.19-5mdk/kernel/fs/nfs/nfs.o.gz: No such file or directory /lib/modules/2.4.19-5mdk/kernel/net/packet/af_packet.o.gz: No such file or directory In RC1 they are in /lib/modules/2.4.19-7mdk/kernel/ of course. I'll try to remove the packages, create some symbolic links, and see if that helps. Damon
[Cooker] 9b4: Confusing message when changing screen resolution
Greetings! When changing screen resolution via drakconf, it gives the message something like "you need to restart kwin". This seems quite confusing for newbies. Perhaps it would be better to say "You need to log out of X windows for changes to take effect" Thanks, Damon
[Cooker] urpmi always expects a CD to be present in DVD-ROM drive
Hi, For some reason whenever I run urpmi, it probes the DVD drive for a CD before it seems to do anything else, even if I'm only installing a file from the current directory that has no dependencies. Since my DVD drive takes a long time to report "hey there is no CD in this drive", I'm wondering why urpmi needs to do that :-) Thanks, Damon
[Cooker] Kate wordwrap mangled
Hello hard-working Mandrake folks, When using Kate 2.0 under beta 2 (with word wrap on), editing of a text files is practically impossible because the text flow is corrupted by the adjustments Kate makes for word wrap. It works fine if you type straight from start to finish without going back to make editing adjustments. But as soon as you go to a previous line and insert text watch out ;-) Changing the value at which the text should be wrapped (e.g. from 72 to 80) causes loss of a non-trivial amount of text. Thanks, Damon
[Cooker] Re: nope, it's Evolution
My apologies. I have narrowed the problem down to Evolution 1.08. I cannot ctrl-c copy from an e-mail message that I have been sent that has been double-clicked and is open in it's own window. After starting some other applications (gedit, gnumeric), now I can cut / copy / past. These other packages are straight beta 2. I'm a little confused by this. Has anyone else noticed this? Damon

[Cooker] Suggestion for install routine
Hi again Mandrake developers, Here is a possible option during install: "Would you like to save all the packages from the installation CDs on your hard drive (will use x.x GB)?" With massive hard drives these days it is often convenient to save the contents of the CDs locally and get rpmdrake to use these packages, and not from the CDs. That's what I do now. It would save a bit of messing around if this step was automated during install. Furthermore you could also ask: "When security updates and bug fixes are downloaded, should these packages be stored locally after installation for possible future use?" You could ask that question when a source is setup. These would be nice but of course you know the priorities a lot better than many of us, so it's up to you :-) Damon
Re: [Cooker] Beta2 - rpmdrake - manual upgrade
In an earlier mail on this list someone pointed out this: ftp://ftp.rpmfind.net/linux/mandrake/cooker/cooker/i586/Mandrake/base/compssUsers Download it and name it /var/lib/urpmi/compssUsers.flat. Or copy it from any 8.2 box. gc posted a URL last week to download the one that he uses.
