[Cooker] Suggestion SIS630
Hi, SIS XFree diver by Thomas W has (again) been improved. It can now completely control the TV output (PAL/NTSC standard, overscan etc.). It works perfectly on my Storever/MITAC 8575 Notebook. http://www.webit.at/~twinny/linuxsis630.shtml I think it would be nice to include his changes in MDK Xfree. The current MDK Xfree driver works well for me (but the TV output can not be fine tuned). JPS. [Cooker] Mandrake Control Center et al. UI inconsistency under KDE
I like 9.0rc2 very much. I am still testing it. However, the user interface of Mandrake control center et al. is still inconsistent on my system. (9.0rc2) Sometimes, kdesu is used, sometimes it is another application. For example, for Software Sources, the KDE menu item calls /usr/sbin/edit-urpm-sources.pl while for the MDK Control Center, it calls /usr/sbin/drakconf While drakconf spawns a kdesu dialog, edit-urpm-sources.pl spawns a GTK dialog without themes and does it in such way that the KDE application startup icon gets messed up just like if it could not lauch the application. Other applications such as menudrake or the password change application show a very uggly theme (buttons, menus) under KDE (while this is not the case of the MDK Control Center which shows a nice theme with gray gradients or for userdrake). The problem is quite general : it seems that there is no policy for consistency among Mandrake configuration applications on the way themes should be rendered or on the way root passwords should be asked to the user. Sometimes, it is kdesu, sometimes it is something else. Sometimes, there are nice themes, sometimes it is plain uggly flat rendering of menus and buttons. Also, (I do not know if that was taken into account), I think that it would be nice if the /root directory contained all the required default settings for propper rendering of themes without requiring users to first login as root before they get consistent themes under KDE whenever they call Mandrake Control Center. After some tests of PRISM II and Mandrake kernel, here is the conclusion : it is not reliable. After 50/100MB of information is sent through the card, the kernel says: Aug 13 17:43:54 localhost kernel: eth1: error -110 reading Rx descriptor. Frame dropped. Aug 13 17:43:54 localhost kernel: eth1: Error -110 writing packet to BAP Aug 13 17:43:54 localhost kernel: eth1: Error -110 writing Tx descriptor to BAP Aug 13 17:44:25 localhost last message repeated 18505 times Aug 13 17:45:26 localhost last message repeated 38057 times Aug 13 17:45:57 localhost last message repeated 20736 times Aug 13 17:45:57 localhost dhcpcd[3645]: terminating on signal 15 Aug 13 17:46:00 localhost kernel: descriptor to BAP Aug 13 17:46:00 localhost kernel: eth1: Error -110 writing Tx descriptor to BAP Aug 13 17:46:01 localhost last message repeated 335 times Aug 13 17:46:01 localhost kernel: eth1: Error -110 setting multicast list. With linux-wlan-ng, such thing does not happen. That'why I think the inclusion of linux-wlan-ng would be good. There are still some issues I think however. The main problemen I had with orinoco dirvers on PRISM II cards is that the driver has the be rebooted (/etc/init.d/pcmcia restart) after some heavy file transfers (typ. 100MB). This does not happen with wlan-ng drivers. Maybe the current kernel is OK for client systems (but it is not OK for servers which act as Access Point). [Cooker] Kernel 2.4.19mdk / devfs / pcmcia bug with ide-cs
Hi, I am using Kernel 2.4.19mdk, pcmcia-cs-3.2.0-1 and Compact Flash monted though an PCMCIA adapter (model ide-cs). This works perfectly usually (and in particular with 2.4.18mdk). ide-cs fails for me with 2.4.19mdk. (devfs_do_symlink(disc0): could not append to parent, err: -17) As a result, doing fdisk/dev/hde returns "Impossible de rechercher /dev/hde" (impossible to find /dev/hde) Same with fdisk /dev/ide/host2/bus0/target0/lun0/disc On the other hand, mounting a partition works fine (it is just impossible to create them). [Cooker] 9.0: suggestion for better XFree / SIS 630 drivers
Hi, I would like to suggest the cooker team to include the following driver in XFree http://www.webit.at/~twinny/linuxsis630.shtml This driver provides much better stability on SIS 630 et al. laptops than the standard one. It is also able to set up TV output, multihead, etc. which is great. We use it in our company on all our laptops. Read for example http://www.nexedi.org/hardware/clevo2200/ Using this driver will likely save a lot of time to a lot of people. If it is difficult to include this in MDK 9.0, please let me know so that I can try to make some kind of RPM. [Cooker] linux-wlan-ng (WiFi) incompatible with Mandrake kernel ?
Hi, We have tried to install linux-wlan-ng-0.1.14 drivers on Mandrake 9.0 Beta 2 without success (ie. with kernel crashes !). I think it is important to include the linux-wlan-ng-0.1.14 or at least to make sure it is not impossible to use them with the Mandrake linux kernel. Why Linux Wlan NG ? -> because the drivers are required for PRISM II cards (the one which are sold the most currently in the entry level price in EU and in Japan, typ. 70 EUR or less) -> because only PRIMS II cards allow to build an access point with Linux (read http://www.cafwap.net/prism2ap/ and http://www.openbrick.org/wiki/wifi ) What does not work : - using orinoco drivers with some PRISM II cards in kernel 2.4.18 (it used to work some time before in previous kernels) -> packets get lost from time to time and can not go beyond the router - compiling linux-wlan-ng drivers and using them with kernel-mdk -> the kernel crashes at the first ping What works : - using a linus standard kernel and compiling the linux-wlan-ng I have no idea what is the issue, but WiFi is getting very popular and will be marketed a lot this winter in EU. Cards will become cheaper. I think MDK 9.0 must include good support of PRISM II chipset. I would love to make an RPM for this but the issue seems to be kernel related and this goes beyong my technical skills. I have the feeling that some extra modules (the wlan wrappers in the 3rdparty directory) may conflit with linux-wlan-ng. JPS. PS. You will find at the URL http://prism2.unixguru.raleigh.nc.us/ a set of RPMs for Red Hat and linux-wlan-ng. -- Jean-Paul Smets-Solanes Nexedi CEOTel. +33(0)6 62 05 76 14Fax. +33(0)1 53 01 09 29 About www.nexedi.com Nexedi is a consulting and development services company helping small and medium organisations to choose open source / free software and fulfill their IT application needs.
