[Cooker] file missing in gcompris

2001-10-30 Thread Jose_Jorge

hi,

as I couldn't manage to enter it in the bug database, I say it here : there
is a file missing in gcompris as of Mdk 8.1.

It makes it crash when you launch the game beside paratrooper.

Thanks

[Cooker] tv cards

2001-10-05 Thread Jose_Jorge

hi,

just installed Mandrake 8.1, and it still has the problem that I need to
launch twice the soft (xawtv, zapping, etc) to get an image.

Does anyone have the same problem?

I use French version ( SECAM) of WinTVgo card, with bt878.

thanks

What about some bugfixes updates via MandrakeUpdate or MandrakeOnline ?
I think that's will make MandrakeOnline be interresting : have bugfixes
 updates or some bleding edge updates ( kde 2.1 - 2.2 - 2.2.1 for
 example ).

This is the ideal situation, but let's not dream, have smooth upgrade from
kde 2.1 - 2.2 - 2.2.1 would need a large amount of human work...

Re: [Cooker] i486 optimized?

2001-10-05 Thread Jose_Jorge

The market is even NULL sized.
But what seems important to me is to keep avaliable Mdk 5.3 (the last i386
compiled version), which could be usefull for shools trying to install X
terminals. I say this because I've done that on an university at Toulouse
France, and I've since lost the Festen cd. So it would be nice to keep
avaliable each release, only in one server...

The market is too small.

Or Maybe SNF or ProSuite ( the server specialise pack ) might be a

Yes SNF runs on i486, it's targetted for these computers.

I have a SOYO 5EMM MATX machine with an AMD K6-2 450 processor that
has a longstanding power down problem. I know that this is kernel
related because power down works fine with the standard 2.4.5-5 kernel
that was distributed with the first 8.0 Freq release. I now have the
standard 2.4.8-26 kernel (Cooker current) installed and power down fails

I pass this along in hopes that someone might have a clue as to what is
going on here. It is certainly not causing a major problem for me, but
if it is happening to me, it is probably happening to others and IMHO it
would be nice to get it cleaned up if possible.

I know you don't support these RPMS, but maybe you can tell me why when I
rebuild from SRPMS from NVIDIA's site, the X server will just crash. If I
use pre-compiled binaries from NVIDIA's site then it works. Maybe it's the
optflags I use when compiling?

Anyway, if your builds have support for devfs, and if they are run through
rpmlint, that would be good. (For example, I think NVIDIA uses
non-standard permissions).

Unfortunately, these drivers aren't offered during the install. It could
be nice if install automatically connected to the NVIDIA FTP site and got
them. Same for winmodmes too. I don't want to encourage non-open software.
I think that, in general, we should prefer open source over binary-only,
but sometimes it is nice.

We decided not to fork because we do not have any time to handle a branched
distrib, so cooker is RC1, and deeply frozen as a consequence.

We only have about one week to finish 8.1, so we must be very carefull
in what we are fixing.

So you can report cooker bugs, as cooker is the same as 8.1.

What is the advantages of using rsync over lftp? Lftp seems to work

rsync transfers only changed parts of files. The most notable case is
hdlists; with lftp you get 15MB every time, with rsycn you get several
KB (well, in order of magnitude :-). Another example is mdkinst. When
new installer is uploaded all dates change an lftp loads everything;
rsync checks if files were actually changed.

Rsync preserves true time that may be helpful sometimes.

Rsync looks generally fatser but it may be just my impression.

I tried the cooker page's one to ftp.sunet.se but it doesn't give me
anyhing other than the files list.

Hi
If you have your cooker directory in /home/XXX/mandrake/cooker then you
could
use this command:
rsync -av --delete ftp.sunet.se::Mandrake-devel/cooker/i586/
/home/XXX/mandrake/cooker/

Observe the trailing /, which tells the program to copy everything in that
directory.

As you are to start using rsync on a wget mirror, you have better add the
option --size-only.

If your connection is bad and you feel that sometimes the transfer is
interrupted, then it is wise to keep the partially transfered files by
adding
the option --partial.

So you might start with:
rsync -av --delete --size-only --partial
ftp.sunet.se::Mandrake-devel/cooker/i586/ /home/XXX/mandrake/cooker/

I always use my browser to check where on the server the desired directory
is.

Good luck.

Re: [Cooker] Proper rsync syntax for Cooker downloads

2001-08-27 Thread Jose_Jorge

No, it will download it all again, because wget is a defective
downloader in that it does not preserve file dates - rsync therefore
determines the server file to be a new version.

Never speak so quick : wget is somewhat old, so there is much chances you
are the defect!

For me, wget -m keeps the file dates, even under w2k...

Re: [Cooker] Politergeist with xmms

Well, you should try these :

the OSS sound driver
play xmms without arts running
kernel 2.2

one of them should work at less ;-)

Has anyone met the following phenomena? At random times, while xmms
plays, the machine freezes completely (nothing helps, not even the magic
keys, only any key). However, these random times have in themselves a
strange order. They happen exactly when the music changes radically.
And, when the machine freezes, the music stops for 90% of the cases.
So, in result, one gets dozens of hillarious moments, specially in cases
when one listens to something like the 5th Concert of Bethooven. Just
imagine ta-ta-tata, and your machine gets silent. Everyone around
already knows that I got to Antarctida again.

What's strange is that other apps that use sound do not seem to have any
problems. Quake3, RealPlayer, mpg123, they all work without problems.
Even after 6 hours of Quake the machine keeps going. arts has been
working for two monthes and it didn't say a hissle. Now I put xmms
working and in less than half-hour I get satisfaction guaranteed and
another monumental laugh all over the room.

This has been happening with several xmms's up to 1.2.5-2. The sound
card is an old good Gravis Ultrasound Max under alsa drivers and
kernel-2.4.8 (since 2.4.3 I get the same effect). The machine is an BP6
with two Cellerons.

Any ideas?

[Cooker] rpm warning

2001-08-24 Thread Jose_Jorge

I am thez only having this on any rpm -Uvh any_rpm.rpm :

couldn't alocate 8192 bytes

and then it installs the thing correctly.

I've rebuild the rpm database, upgraded with 23/8 cooker, this doesn't
change.

Furthermore rpmdrake doesn't install anything, no error message sent in
console.

I don't know, but as I have downloaded and burnt

But 99% is that it won't , since the new
boot system is very far from the standart;-(

first problem that I hope will be fixed before 8.1 since
windows XP will be out , is the New NTFS support
(minimum : read only)
and the support for the boot .

I will try if no boot problems appear I've converted two of my drive to

anyone now if there as any solution to delete file that are no longer in
the
server since I've no found any port of fmirror for win32 , I'm using wget :

wget -rm --dot-style=mega ftp://sunsite.uio
no/pub/unix/Linux/Mandrake-devel/cooker/i586 -o logs

someone no what I need to add for deleting files that are no longer on the

This is really odd... I've been using reiserfs almost exclusively

for is /var because I run qmail on all my machines and there was an
issue with qmail and reiserfs in the past (no idea if it's fixed, but
/var being ext2 is a matter of habit now).

Anyways, I've had a number of power outtages despite having UPS's with
the systems all of a sudden going down. I may have lost the odd file
occassionally, but certainly never an entire partition. Considering
this is on about 5 machines all showing the same thing, I'm a little
hesitant to think it's reiserfs *alone*. Maybe there is something
with the files on /var that causes this problem (again, maybe if I had
reiserfs /var partitions I would have experienced the same thing, I
 don't know).

I do know that I have never lost more than a handful of files and I've
got many reiserfs partitions across various systems.

Same here. I did loose two partitions on completetly different hard drives
but tracked it down to hard drive controler failure. The only thing I can
say
about the failure is that the ext2 partitions survived it but reiser didn't

However I run reiser on almost everything and this is the first time I've
had
a problem.
