Well I can provide the DivX plaer wihtout the codecs, that should be
legal.

[Cooker] About *not* playing windows media?

2000-10-16 Thread Kon

Exactly. After all, the DivX codec is a rip of the Microsoft MPEG4v3 codec
with broken 'protection' in effect allowing any application to encode video
using the codec, not just MS media encoder. Bad move to put these in the
Mandrake distro. I have a feeling MS will come out and sue these jokers too
when they decide to release their supposed 'next generation divx'.

Mandrake should stay as far away from this as possible.

But as far as legitimate (i.e. non-divx) codecs go - why the heck not!

I found that Xtheater could play asf and avi(with divx) .
http://Xtheater.sourceforge.net/

There is also a xmms-avi package which consists of a xmms plugin that
   reads (at least) DivX files.
Maybe this must-have package should be part of Mandrake ?

It needs some DLL and I don't know where they come from (and I don't
like
  putting DLL's).

.dll are of course Windows stuff, basically how DivX works on GNU/Linux is
just some .dll with wine. It's not a matter of whether you like it or not,
but
these .dll are not freely distributable anyway, so, either way, you cannot
 distribute it on RPM.

Or go to freshmeat and download XTheater. :-)

 Well...
I guess you could install Win9x under VMWare (http://www.vmware.com) or
Win4Lin (http://www.trelos.com). Or you could just dual-boot. Or,
 ugg...
 Run Windows exclusively.

[Cooker] RPMDrake1.1-7mdk bug in cooker (27 Sep 00)

2000-09-27 Thread Kon

rpmdrake 1.1-7mdk

Delete all the RPM sources from the preferences
window and RPMDrake will not start (exits on opening).
Reinstalling rpms does not work, and I have no idea
where the init files are stored?

[Cooker] Problem resolved - Base 7.1 + Gnome 1.2

2000-09-02 Thread Kon

Hi All,

FYI I have fixed my problems with a base install of
7.1 and Gnome 1.2 from helixcode. Not sure if this has been addressed before,
but anyway -

Installing 7.1 with no optional packages (i.e. a
clean 380Mb install w/X) as a development station and theninstalling the
latest Gnome packages with the Gnome installer will break some things,
namely:

X will not start (missing libs required by
gnome)
DrakConf will be broken (gnome 1.2 screws up
perl-gtk)

1. Install Gnome 1.2
2. Install lib-ungif, lib-tiff and lib-jpeg (they
are not installed as part of the 7.1base)
3. (re)Install Perl-Gtk (if necessary, force)

Everything should work 100%

[Cooker] 7.1 / Cooker stripped down install - bugs?

2000-09-01 Thread Kon

Guys,

Base installation of 7.1 (developer/expert) w/ no
package groups, medium security -
Installing Helix-gnome 1.2.x via helixcode.com
'mandrake 7.0/7.1 install set' breaks the system. (gtk.pm gets toasted, X
will not run (its a window manager issue, might be security, I have not had time
to look further into it)

Same type install as above but with current cooker
ver (as of last night), but with only gnome packages installed from the install
sets -
Drakconf will not run, but apps fired from it such
as harddrake etc will (individually).

Are these known problems? ...they are
reproducable.
