Yes you can (ntpd), but if the local clock is too far out, it
will never
lock-in and properly adjust the system time.
You can force this with the -g switch
If the local clock is not too far out, the ntpd may take up
to 2000 seconds
to sync the system time. ntpdate (inconjunction with the
step-tickers file)
was/is used to force an initial step change in system time
before starting
ntpd so that ntpd can actully do its function with in a short
period of time
after being started.
