[Cooker] VMWare3.1 - unable to install

2002-04-14 Thread Rainer Koschnick

Hello,

I was just trying to update my VMWare to 3.1 since 3.0 didn't
want to work anymore with current cooker. It seems that 3.1 refuses
to work as well since none of the supplied programs used in the
startup-scripts seem to work anymore:

Apr 14 20:26:24 localhost VMware[init]: /usr/bin/vmware-ping: relocation
error: /usr/bin/vmware-ping: undefined symbol: atexit

Apr 14 20:26:24 localhost VMware[init]: /usr/bin/vmnet-netifup:

Is there any way to fix that?

[Cooker] Cannot update dev package

2002-03-24 Thread Rainer Koschnick

Hello,

when I try to update the dev-3.2-4mdk.i586 package,
urpmi gets stuck. If I check with ps, I can see the
following:

/sbin/modprobe -k -C /etc/modules.devfs /dev/cciss

then, a few seconds later:

/sbin/modprobe -k -C /etc/modules.devfs /dev/ida

then it starts over again with cciss. It seems to be an
endless loop.

If those 2 are mutual why did the dev package get installed with

As long as there are applications which depend on it (DDD being one I am

RPM is not supposed to use /root/RPM, but /usr/RPM
and it's nos specific to the gaim package, but happens with every other
source package I try to install or rebuild.

[Cooker] disabling file stripping from .spec file?

2002-02-17 Thread Rainer Koschnick

Hello,

is it possible to disable the file stripping from within a .spec file?
I need to make a debug build of galeon and when I rebuild the package,
all files get stripped before they get packaged.

I modified /usr/lib/brp-mandrake for that cause:

if [ -x /usr/share/spec-helper/spec-helper ];then
/usr/share/spec-helper/spec-helper -s (-s = don't strip)

Is there any other way?

[Cooker] Mirrors out of synch?

2002-02-15 Thread Rainer Koschnick

Hello,

usually I use more than 1 mirror in order to update my cooker (with
mirror.pl). Last week it happened that half of all the packages of
ftp-stud.fht-esslingen.de were downloaded even though they already existed on
my harddisk.

I didn't use any other mirror since then. Today I tried to use ftp.lip6.fr
and it also started to update packages which I already have, and which
are dated Feb 6.

package=cooker_rpms1
ftp.lip6.fr:/pub/linux/distributions/mandrake-devel/cooker/i586/Mandrake/RPMS
- /pub/mirror/cooker/i586/Mandrake/RPMS
Scanning local directory /pub/mirror/cooker/i586/Mandrake/RPMS
Scanning remote directory
/pub/linux/distributions/mandrake-devel/cooker/i586/Mandrake/RPMS
compare directories (src 2130, dest 2130)
Got synthesis.hdlist.cz 147344 3
Got XFree86-xfs-4.2.0-3mdk.i586.rpm 490093 7
Got XFree86-static-libs-4.2.0-3mdk.i586.rpm 2375642 29

-r--r--r--1 root root 490093 Feb 6 23:30
./cooker/i586/Mandrake/RPMS/XFree86-xfs-4.2.0-3mdk.i586.rpm

So I aborted that transfer and switched back to esslingen:

package=cooker_rpms1
ftp-stud.fht-esslingen.de:/pub/Mirrors/Mandrake-devel/cooker/i586/Mandrake/RPMS
- /pub/mirror/cooker/i586/Mandrake/RPMS
Scanning local directory /pub/mirror/cooker/i586/Mandrake/RPMS
Scanning remote directory
/pub/Mirrors/Mandrake-devel/cooker/i586/Mandrake/RPMS
compare directories (src 2130, dest 2131)
Got synthesis.hdlist.cz 147428 2
Got XFree86-static-libs-4.2.0-3mdk.i586.rpm 2375634 27
Got XFree86-xfs-4.2.0-3mdk.i586.rpm 490085 6

How come that the file sizes differ?

I used to be able to switch from one mirror to another, updating from the more
current one.. but at the moment it's impossible since I don't know which
mirror is correct.

So what's going on there? Anyone knows?

Rgds,
Rainer

I got the same problem, only that I don't get the error message.
I have to go to control center and restart artsd. It's not SB specific

Well, rsync also isn't that smart. It also tried to redownload all of
the files, but since rsync will only transfer changed parts of binary
files, the download went really fast.

Is mirror.pl not using rsync? If not, then this ought to be changed -

No, it can only do FTP transfers AFAIK. Maybe it's time to switch.

It does not get loaded or you do not have correct permissions for
/dev/nvidia*? What does start as normal user means - from level 5 or

from level 3? What exactly you do?

Level 3 that is. I login from the console as normal (not root) user and do
startx. What I get is:

(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVdriver kernel module!
(EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting ***

It doesn't seem to be a permission problem since startx doesn't work for root
either. The module just doesn't get loaded automatically, I have to modprobe
it.

  - in console.perms I got his:

  ...
  dri=/dev/nvidia* /dev/3dfx*
  ...

This may or may not be a problem.

  - modules.conf has this entry: alias char-major-195 NVdriver

Is not used with devfs anyway

Is there anything else that needs to be set?

You do not even say what version of nVidia drivers or what version of
Mandrake you have and you ask what needs to be done?

This is the cooker mailing list here, right? :) I am using cooker. And as
for the driver, it's the 2313. Everything used to work until yesterday.
I updated the kernel to 2.4.17-16, recompiled my NVdriver which complained
that it couldn't create the device nodes. When I had to reboot later that day
I noticed that the module doesn't get loaded anymore.

Same problem here. modprobe works fine but it has to be done manually
before using startx. All current cooker rpms (+rebuilt nvidia) as of Sat
 Feb 9 18:00 UTC 2002

This pb already happened a few versions ago and had been fixed.

The tainted kernel is just a flag and is not used anywhere as far as I
 know (not much).

Maybe adding it to /etc/modules would solve the problem?

# /etc/modules: kernel modules to load at boot time.
#
# This file should contain the names of kernel modules that are

Re: [Cooker] checkinstall package

2002-01-13 Thread Rainer Koschnick

Hi Lenny,

It uses /usr/local instead of /usr as 'prefix' so it won't run
out of the box (the /usr/bin/checkinstall installwatch scripts
need to be modified by hand).

thanks, I've fixed this in a -2mdk package.
Give it a try and tell me :-)

The /usr/bin/installwatch script which is used by checkinstall still
fails:

= Installation results ===
This script has not been installed
Please run make install

  Installation failed. Aborting package creation.

Cleaning up...OK

Bye.
-

Did you do a make install in the installwatch extraction dir with
--prefix=/usr?

Even though it's a script it still has a Makefile which sets the correct
program and configfile locations.

Installwatch is missing the PREFIX declaration:

#!/bin/sh
#$Id: installwatch,v 0.6.1.1 2001/06/25 05:29:45 izto Exp $

PREFIX=#PREFIX#

The Makefile would set that to PREFIX=/usr

How could they be 'broken'? No matter what, I need them in order to

I had activated Full Duplex operation in the sound server setup, and
somehow it doesn't seem to work anymore. I turned it off and am now
having sound again.

So there seems to be something wrong with either the arts package, or
the kde sound modules because it used to work up until last week.

KDE sound control panel, now there's only OSS. Maybe I'm wrong though

[Cooker] How to get kernel headers for kernel-linus2.4-2.4.16-1mdk?

2001-11-27 Thread Rainer Koschnick

Hello,

I just installed that kernel and now I'm wondering how I can get the correct kernel
headers.

I also installed kernel-linus2.4-2.4.16-1mdk.src.rpm and did a 'rpm -bp' on the SPEC
file, which gave me a directory with the patched(?) linux
source. I moved the directory to /usr/src made /usr/src/linux point to
linux-2.4.16-1mdklinus, copied /boot/config-2.4.16-1mdklinus as
/usr/src/linux/.config and did a 'make dep'. So now I got a reasonable-
looking source directory.

I need the header files in order to compile the VMWare modules. It expects to find
header files for version 2.4.16-1mdklinus, instead it finds version 2.4.16 in
/usr/src/linux/include/linux/version.h.

'uname -r' gives me 2.4.16-1mdklinus.

Is this the correct way to get the kernel headers?

Try to boot with another kernel. Insert CD #2 for easy doing that.

IDE controller boot order has changed since MDK8.1b3.
I had spme problems when I tried to update the kernel,
and also when I tried to install Mandrake 8.1. There's a kernel
option (boot off second ide controller first - or something), that
has been activated at one point. I had to deactivate my Promise
IDE controller during installation (its first harddisk was recognized
as dev/hda--my bios doesn't agree with that, neither does my Windows
partition). After installation there's a kernel option that you can
set in /etc/lilo.conf (if you are using grub, I don't know how to
pass it)...:

append= hdd=ide-scsi devfs=mount ide=reverse quiet
  ^^^
It tells the Mandrake built kernels to boot off the first ide controller.

After reboot it's safe to re-activate the 2nd IDE controller.

Maybe that also solves your problem.
