[Cooker] Mirrors out of synch?
Hello, usually I use more than 1 mirror in order to update my cooker (with mirror.pl). Last week it happened that half of all the packages of ftp-stud.fht-esslingen.de were downloaded even though they already existed on my harddisk. I didn't use any other mirror since then. Today I tried to use ftp.lip6.fr and it also started to update packages which I already have, and which are dated Feb 6. package=cooker_rpms1 ftp.lip6.fr:/pub/linux/distributions/mandrake-devel/cooker/i586/Mandrake/RPMS - /pub/mirror/cooker/i586/Mandrake/RPMS Scanning local directory /pub/mirror/cooker/i586/Mandrake/RPMS Scanning remote directory /pub/linux/distributions/mandrake-devel/cooker/i586/Mandrake/RPMS compare directories (src 2130, dest 2130) Got synthesis.hdlist.cz 147344 3 Got XFree86-xfs-4.2.0-3mdk.i586.rpm 490093 7 Got XFree86-static-libs-4.2.0-3mdk.i586.rpm 2375642 29 -r--r--r--1 root root 490093 Feb 6 23:30 ./cooker/i586/Mandrake/RPMS/XFree86-xfs-4.2.0-3mdk.i586.rpm So I aborted that transfer and switched back to esslingen: package=cooker_rpms1 ftp-stud.fht-esslingen.de:/pub/Mirrors/Mandrake-devel/cooker/i586/Mandrake/RPMS - /pub/mirror/cooker/i586/Mandrake/RPMS Scanning local directory /pub/mirror/cooker/i586/Mandrake/RPMS Scanning remote directory /pub/Mirrors/Mandrake-devel/cooker/i586/Mandrake/RPMS compare directories (src 2130, dest 2131) Got synthesis.hdlist.cz 147428 2 Got XFree86-static-libs-4.2.0-3mdk.i586.rpm 2375634 27 Got XFree86-xfs-4.2.0-3mdk.i586.rpm 490085 6 How come that the file sizes differ? I used to be able to switch from one mirror to another, updating from the more current one.. but at the moment it's impossible since I don't know which mirror is correct. So what's going on there? [Cooker] Sound problems in current KDE
Hello, some days ago I wrote that I am having problems with sound in KDE which would not work. I just figured out why it's not working anymore. I had activated Full Duplex operation in the sound server setup, and somehow it doesn't seem to work anymore. I turned it off and am now having sound again. So there seems to be something wrong with either the arts package, or the kde sound modules because it used to work up until last week. Hello, I wrote this before but didn't get any response. Since the last couple of cooker updates I don't have ALSA support in artsd, I can only select OSS from the KDE control center. Therefore I don't have any sound in KDE. What happened? Rainer
[Cooker] No sound in KDE
Hello, since the last cooker updates (about 2 days) I don't get sounds in KDE anymore. There must be something wrong with kdesound or the arts package since neither KDE, nor artsplay doesn't produce any sound output. It's still working in Gnome so I don't think that it has to do with my machine. Any ideas? Rainer
[Cooker] No sound in KDE (#2)
Hello, I might be wrong but I think I can remember that in sound server setup in the control center I could chose between ALSA or OSS for the Sound I/O method. Now there's only OSS left. Rgds, Rainer

[Cooker] How to get kernel headers for kernel-linus2.4-2.4.16-1mdk?
Hello, I just installed that kernel and now I'm wondering how I can get the correct kernel headers. I also installed kernel-linus2.4-2.4.16-1mdk.src.rpm and did a 'rpm -bp' on the SPEC file, which gave me a directory with the patched(?) linux source. I moved the directory to /usr/src made /usr/src/linux point to linux-2.4.16-1mdklinus, copied /boot/config-2.4.16-1mdklinus as /usr/src/linux/.config and did a 'make dep'. So now I got a reasonable- looking source directory. I need the header files in order to compile the VMWare modules. It expects to find header files for version 2.4.16-1mdklinus, instead it finds version 2.4.16 in /usr/src/linux/include/linux/version.h. 'uname -r' gives me 2.4.16-1mdklinus. Is this the correct way to get the kernel headers? Rgds, Rainer

If I use rpmdrake to update my system I keep getting complaints about already installed files (gurpmi seems to do an install instead of update action!) It's quite strange though since gurpmi actually is just a call to urpmi. Rgds, Rainer

However, I do remember it DS had something to do with INIT. I am using a Voodoo3 with a EGA-NTSC Converter DS to hook up to my TV so I can use it as a web-tv/game console/MP3/whatever DS else I want but am stuck with 8.0 which does not detect the sound chip. I am DS going to have to hand tweak the kernel and things to get stuff working. I am DS using 256MB of DDR. That seems to work ok but I don't really notice any DS mind-blowing speed. Probably due the slow 4GB HD in it untill I buy a newer DS one. I would be glad to share knowledge with others on my findings. The funny people at mandrake have changed the IDE controller boot order in the kernel. In case you are using the RAID controller, its first harddisk will be mounted as /dev/hda. In that case you should turn off the Promise during installation and add ide=reverse to the append = args in /etc/lilo.conf, issue a /sbin/lilo, reboot and turn the controller back on. Hope that helps, Rainer

[Cooker] GTK apps freeze KDE
Hello, lately it has been happening very often that GTK applications freeze my X. I am using KDE, and KDE applications work without any problems. When I try to XMMS for example and use the file selector the system freezes. Usually I can't even kill X and have to reboot. Other applications also tend to hang.. sylpheed, mandrake update, ... Using all the latest cooker stuff here. I first noticed that problem about 1 1/2 weeks ago. Any ideas? Rainer

I have tried to reformat the hard drive, but the problem just won't go away. Why does this happen? Try to boot with another kernel. Insert CD #2 for easy doing that. IDE controller boot order has changed since MDK8.1b3. I had spme problems when I tried to update the kernel, and also when I tried to install Mandrake 8.1. There's a kernel option (boot off second ide controller first - or something), that has been activated at one point. I had to deactivate my Promise IDE controller during installation (its first harddisk was recognized as dev/hda--my bios doesn't agree with that, neither does my Windows partition). After installation there's a kernel option that you can set in /etc/lilo.conf (if you are using grub, I don't know how to pass it)...: append= hdd=ide-scsi devfs=mount ide=reverse quiet ^^^ It tells the Mandrake built kernels to boot off the first ide controller. After reboot it's safe to re-activate the 2nd IDE controller. Maybe that also solves your problem. Regards, Rainer
