[Cooker] Trying to install GnuCash on Mandrake 7.0
I'm not sure if this is the right list, but the GnuCash list suggested that the problems were Gnome and it's libraries, not GnuCash. I have Mandrake 7.0, and have not been able to build and install Gnucash since January 2001, when they added Guppi dependencies. I currently have GnuCash 4.x running, but I can't get the latest release, 1.6.2 to run correctly. The i586 rpms were downloaded as binaries, I built the i686 rpms from src.rpms. I built these packages, specifically, because the binaries for them required glibc >= 2.2, but I only have glibc-2.1.3. Below I have documented the "tricks" I used to get a build. download and install: db3-3.1.17-6.src.rpm rpm -bb db3.spec error: failed build dependencies: db1-static is needed by db3-3.1.17-6 glibc-static is needed by db3-3.1.17-6 Trick: glibc-2.1.3-16mdk provides the db1-static and glibc-static files. So, I edited db3.spec and removed the db1-static and glibc-static dependencies, download and install: gal-0.9.1-2mdk.src.rpm rpm -bb gal.spec >& gal.build.txt error: failed build dependencies: db1-devel is needed by gal-0.9.1-2mdk libgnome-vfs0-devel is needed by gal-0.9.1-2mdk Trick: db1-devel stuff is provided by glibc-devel-2.1.3-16mdk, so, I removed db1-devel from gal.spec file. -- download and install: Guppi-0.35.3-3mdk.src.rpm rpm -bb Guppi.spec ... /usr/bin/gettextize: cd: ../po: No such file or directory You should update your own `aclocal.m4' by adding the necessary macro packages gettext.m4, lcmessage.m4 and progtest.m4 from the directory `/usr/share/aclocal' + aclocal -I macros aclocal: configure.in: 105: macro `AM_PROG_XML_I' not found in library Bad exit status from /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.20323 (%build) Trick: I added link in usr/local/share/aclocal ln -s /usr/share/aclocal/xml-i18n-tools.m4 --- download an

I'm having problems installing a number of rpm packages. Can't install these: Guppi-0.35.2-1.i586.rpm glibc-2.2.1-3mdk.i586.rpm glibc-devel-2.2.1-3mdk.i586.rpm bonobo-0.33-2mdk.i586.rpm rpm error message: "only packages with major numbers <=3 are supported by this version of RPM" NOTE: this is not the usual dependency problem, the RPM program itself, fails to open "Guppi-0.35.2-1.i586.rpm", even for query! Can't install these: gettext-0.10.35-17mdk.rpm gettext-devel-0.10.35-17mdk.rpm libgnomeprint11-0.25-3mdk.rpm libgnomeprint11-devel-0.25-3mdk.rpm Because of dependencies: rpmlib(PayloadFilesHavePrefix) <= 4.0-1 rpmlib(CompressedFileNames) <= 3.0.4-1 I have no clue where these functions are. A search on rpmfind turns um nothing. A search on Mandrake web site also turns up nothing. I was on the mandrake mailing lists and they offered no particular help, other than to point out that I needed EARLIER versions of what ever this was, but they didn't tell me what it was. I did a search for string "PayloadFilesHavePrefix" and "CompressedFileNames" from /usr, both were found in: /usr/bin/rmp2cpio /usr/lib/librpm.so.0 /usr/lib/librpm.so.0.0.0 /usr/lib/librpm.a /usr/lib/librpm.so Current versions: Mandrake 7.0 rpm-3.0.5-27mdk.i586.rpm rpm-devel3.0.5-27mdk.i586.rpm These are in rpm and rpm-devel. Could not find version rpm-3.0.4 in Mandrake binary format on rpmfind, but I had 3.0.3 on my Mandrake 7.0 CD. I installed them: rpm -U --force rpm-3.0.3-43mdk.i586.rpm rpm-devel-3.0.3-43mdk.i586.rpm Unfortunately, this did not fix the "rpmlib(...) <= x" dependency problems, nor did it fix the "major numbers <=3" problem. There seems to be an error in the dependency message! i.e., is "rpmlib" really "librpm" ? Also, is the "<= 4.0-1" and "<= 3.0.4-1" really supposed to be ">=" ? [Cooker] RPM upgrade problems
I posted this on "expert" but I received no reply. Perhaps someone here knows... In kpackage, with "glibc-2.2.1-3mdk.rpm" selected, I get the following error message: "only packages with major numbers <=3 are supported by this version of RPM" Several other packages give this error also. Current versions: Mandrake 7.0 kpackage-1.3.10-1mdk rpm-3.0.5-27mdk rpm-devel-3.0.5-27mdk I'm trying to install: rpm-4.0-8mdk.rpm which has dependencies: glibc >= 2.1.92 rpmlib(PayloadFilesHavePrefix) <= 4.0-1 libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.2) rpmlib(CompressedFileNames) <= 3.0.4-1 I searched the archives and found a few hits, but none of the suggestions helped. Questions: 1. What version of rpm will fix the above problem? 2. Where can I find "rpmlib"? I've searched rpmfind.com and the Mandrake web site and got no hits. Curiosity questions only: 3. What part of "glibc-2.2.1-3mdk.rpm" fails "<=3" anyway? 4. What kind of ridiculous limit is 3 for a version number anyway? A large number like 1000 might be barely justifiable, but "3"? I noticed that I had gettext-0.10.35-16mdk installed, so I got gettext-0.10.35-17mdk.i586.rpm and noticed that this also had the dependencies above. Then I guessed that -16mdk might not have the dependencies, so I got gettext-devel-0.10.35-16mdk.i586.rpm and installed it, no dependency problems! So, I downloaded: gettext-devel-0.10.35-17mdk-i586.rpm, but that has dependencies: rpmlib(PayloadFilesHavePrefix) and rpmlib(CompressedFileNames) rpmfind.net has nothing for "rpmlib" , neither does the mandrake cooker site.
