Re: Re:[Cooker]Internet Connection using a cable-modem

1999-12-23 Thread Samuel McCloud

Thats wrong. DHCP works on my cable modem just
fine. All you do is select your Eternet card from a list and it asks you if you
want to use DHCP and you anwser yes. Thats how I do my installs of
linux.
And to add to that, my IP is dynamic.

  As I understand
it, you can NOT use DHCP with a cable modem. You MUST use a static IP
address and then it will work.
You need to make sure you set your IP address, and your
  gateway That should
  do it. I'm not sure
how you can do DHCP with a cable modem. Just set it as a static
  if it never changes.
But also make sure you have your default gateway set also.
  That should do it.
You will also need your gateway to probably be set.

I managed to getlinux up and running. Now I'm trying to

I'm to the net through Rogers @home (cable modem). For my

   to
give the identification and workgroup which was provided

  Everytime I attempt

p.s. My Ip is always the same, so it should be static,
  what need is there

It gave me a list of ethernet cards during the install and I just picked the
one that was mine. After that it asked if I wanted to use DHCP and I said
yes.

I have used dhcp with a cable modem and it works perfectly. However the
autodetect routine on oxygen seems to be a little off It detected my
friends card as a boomerang instead of a 3c59x based card this caused
dhcp to fail. I changed the module to the right one and everything owrked
fine. So I suggest checking the module getting loaded to make sure its
 agreeing with your Nic's chipset.
