They don't get an fstab entry as mentioned before and also problems with ownership. This way, install can look after things better. Maybe the "upgrade" from ext2 partition like this will work now. /boot /home /usr/local /archive /swap / ok, i understand what you mean, you didn't choose the right mouse so that the X configuration test work. That's a way. Only wishing there was another one... I didn't get a chance to do mouse or keyboard. The install skipped right over to the file system install. I could have gone back, but I want to see what the install does if I play a little "dumb". hehehe 2) it skipped keyboard config 3) named my dos partitions dos_C and dos_D. Fstab entries were made, but no mount points. I had to make fstab entry for /usr/local (install path). Maybe add comment here to: "right click on parition to name". New problem with naming mnt points to go with fstab. I just completed the "/mnt/dos" by adding "_C" during install. (Getting close :-) /etc/fstab: /dev/hda1 /mnt/dos_C vfat defaults 0 0 /dev/hda5 /mnt/dos_D vfat defaults 0 0 [terp@localhost terp]$ ls /mnt DOS_hda1 DOS_hda5 cdrom disk floppy Maybe the install should give dos partitions generic names and mount in /mnt. If people don't like the names they can change them after. It would make it easier to have working desktop icons right at the start. I deleted and changed the sizes of several partitions, rebooted and continued. Maybe "reboot" button for this event instead of "ctrl-alt-delete". i don't understand, it should tell you: ``you'll have to reboot'' (or alike) and then it tells you (when you quit diskdrake) `` you have to reboot'' and it reboots when you click ok. I will be doing some re-arranging again and will let you know. I had tried to "undo" and use "automatic" to experiment. The dos partitions went white and it tried to set up partitions in that area. You have a *tough* job to prevent people from doing stupid things (like me - hehehe). Maybe get some beginners in and watch them as they try to install. Lots of combinations that can go wrong here. Unfortunately, they blame Mandrake for their dumb mistakes :-( 4) don't like the fact that ALL translations of man-pages and ISO were installed. Maybe this can be tagged to selected language? Should have man-pages as default. They're good to have. Just not all languages. planned. i'll do it today! It worked. Thanks. 5) package installations times are off by around 50% extra. Newt install does fairly good job. Maybe comment at bottom should read: "Selected packages are now being installed." without the ". should only take a few minutes" It took about 28 minutes for my install. Install timing was good with this install. yes, i try not to read the help at the bottom. Not my job (how i hate writing docs...) 8-) Easy now. No comments at all ;-) Maybe that's good. On Wed, 27 Oct 1999, you wrote: On Wed, 27 Oct 1999, Terrapin wrote: It is a little confusing adding users: Add User Done I filled out the form and said "Done" but it failed to make a user entry. "Done" implies that the job is finished and the info entered previously is correct. Maybe change words to:Accept Done This way, the existing user info would be entered and a new form opened for another user until "Done" pressed. I agree, however i thought "Done" should be changed Add User No more/Continue/Proceed/ The problem here is that the "Add User" does two things. It enters (adds) THIS user's data into the file and it also sets up for an ADDitional user. Because the overall function is called "Add Users" the mind is already thinking "additional" users. There is ambiguity here. "That's all the user's I have to add now. I'll proceed with the installation." This may leave the last user not installed. Maybe: Accept User Done Intuitively: Add User~ + Done~ = Accept User ~ ! Normal calculator is done like this: A + B + C + D = ABCD But, the function requires we do this: A + B + C + D + = ABCD If we do it intuitively, we get error: A + B + C + D = ABC With "Accept User" it becomes: A ! B ! C ! D ! = ABCD "Accept User" tells us we HAVE to push that button so the user info will be entered and prevents ambiguity. It also sets us up nicely for the next user form to appear (until we're "Done"). "Done" is good here because that's exactly what it does. No more/Continue/Proceed/ don't tell us where we're going until we've gone ;-) PS The logic here reminds me of my extensive programming for machine control using Forth. The toughest part was making the software usable for semi-skilled people.

[Cooker] Good gi_hd DrakX install today
Tried out the "beginners" hd install from ext2 /usr/local/cooker for the first time. 1) it skipped mouse config (which was good as generic PS/2 w/ emulation does not cause my Intellipoint wheel mouse to die at x configuration). I did have to run mouseconfig after booting into Mandrake. This was not a problem because the mouse worked OK as a two button mouse. 2) it skipped keyboard config 3) named my dos partitions dos_C and dos_D. Fstab entries were made, but no mount points. I had to make fstab entry for /usr/local (install path). Maybe add comment here to: "right click on parition to name". I deleted and changed the sizes of several partitions, rebooted and continued. Maybe "reboot" button for this event instead of "ctrl-alt-delete". 3) chose the 645/2763 package selection without looking at what it would install (a beginner wouldn't understand much of the packages anyway) and this gave me a very good workstation configuration. Just had to add ppp (plus few rpm related fixes) and I was up and running. (wrong ppp for kernel-2.2.x - I commented out alias' in conf.modules as usual) The beginners package selection is going to be confusing. Maybe descriptive levels. Could be in documentation what you get for each level ( very general like newt install) 4) don't like the fact that ALL translations of man-pages and ISO were installed. Maybe this can be tagged to selected language? Should have man-pages as default. They're good to have. Just not all languages. 5) package installations times are off by around 50% extra. I keep the cooker stuff in /usr/local/cooker/Mandrake on a separate /usr/local partition. if you have, it really should be ok. the problem comes from different versions of kernel and modules. I used a rescue disk and saw that the basic formatting did not erase any files at all. ``basic formatting'' what d'u mean ? I did an "expert install". When it came to the partitioning, I named my partitions but did not change their sizes. I selected / (hda10) and /boot (hda7) for formatting without checking. The drive worked for a few minutes as it formatted. I left /home (hda8) and /usr/local (hda9) untouched. The install failed after choosing my packages (about 600meg). It started the package installation GUI (where you see the packages being installed) and crashed with a signal 11. It turned out my linux was still intact except for the mangled rpm database. The not really formatting has occured several times before with boot.img. I reported it on cooker and someone else had the same thing happen. I just tried a "expert" "upgrade" and found that I could install if I DID NOT click on the "go" button but instead selected "Install system" from the left menu. The upgrade proceeded (11 packages) and I was able to make a boot disk and also lilo. The display worked ok (GD5446) but I lost the mouse (IMPS/2) at this time. I used the keyboard to select OK in the x configure. I had to switch to another console and ctr-alt-delete out of install because the program kept jumping back to my unfinished "Choose packages to install" after each selection and I had no mouse to select finish. I rebooted with the new lilo and noticed the "dos" has been changed to "windows" and the wording is different. The boot cleaned up the improperly unmounted drives and went to runlevel 5. At this time I got a grey screen with a working mouse and no Mandrake GUI login. I opened a new console and killed x . Then ran desktopconfig and used startx into kde. When there is a working boot.img, I will try another fresh install with gi_hd. I don't want to use it to install unless I can fix things up with boot.img if it fails. I was able to floppy boot into a working linux but the rpm data base got screwed up. It shows that I didn't even have a kernel installed. Re: [Cooker] Panoramix failed on x configuration
I re-installed cooker with the old installer and installed XF86Setup. It now no longer works at all, no matter what I do. The IMPS/2 mouse is not recognized and causes the mouse cursor to activate the button in the top right corner. I made a bug report 6 weeks ago about this. I think I'm going to put Linux away for a few months and check back in the new year. Re: [Cooker] panoramix
Sounds good. For Mandrake to be successful in attracting the beginners, it must take on the role of "sys admin" in order to get them going. Once they are in the door, they can learn more about the OS if they wish. On 20 Sep 1999 00:03:20 +0200, you wrote: I added quite a lot of features or at least automatic things. So now, all you have to do in beginner is wait for the question `Is it ok?' and answear yes and that's it. runlevel 5 by default of course :) Anyway, you can always (or will be able to soon) go back and choose something else. That way, installation is a piece of cake! I'm gonna try a blindfold install soon :) A big question mark button has appeared and will soon give more help. cu Pixel.
