[Cooker] 9.0-beta2 drakconnect bug

2002-08-08 Thread daz

I just installed 9.0beta2 on a friends workstation and encountered a
showstopper bug in drakconnect. here are the details:

I didnt set up networking on initial install because I didnt know what
kind of ISA nic card was being used and auto-probing didnt work. After
the install, I found out it was a ne2000 compatible ISA card (ne module).
Went to drakconf, started drakconnect. ran the wizard, no go. I tried to
specify the options, still no go. however, from a cmd-line, I could load
the module correctly (modprobe ne io=0x300).

the problem: drakconnect doesnt just run "modprobe ne io=0x300". I runs
"modprobe ne (comma seperated values) io=io=0x300". 2 notes. 1) the part
in parans are definately in the command issued by drakconnect and 2) the
duplicate 'io=' part might be me. we didnt have time to check that part.

Also, I am not subscribed to the cooker list anymore, so if someone
could get this to the right place? Im thinking any module that needs params
will have this problem.

i feel the same way. of course, i also feel the same way about gnome2
(which isnt even at a final release yet) being installed in /usr/bin. but
hey, im just a user/advocater. what the hell do I know. Obviously, the
mandrake developers know better than us.

I know its supposed to *eventually* replace gnome1.x. However, its going
to be awhile yet (see below). kde3 is supposed to replace kde2, also.

I think this is the one thing I dont like about mandrake. it seems too
kde-centric. There are alot of people(users) that dont like/use kde (me
being
one of them). it doesnt work for me. it never has. I force myself to
use the newest version every once in awhile for at least a week (so I can
get familiar with the differences over gnome), and I always come back to
gnome. I think mandrake need to reassign some developers to help out
Frederic :).

I have tried every beta that garnome has an install for :). Besides
applets, and some other stuff *ahem* sawfish *ahem*, its fairly nice.
Unfortunately, some of those applets are important to me :)
unfortunately, untils some more porting to gnome2 is done, it wont be
usable for me (except as a plaything).

I just think its irresponsible to *replace* stable software(gnome1.4) with
very-much-in-beta-testing-not-quite-there-yet software (gnome2). yes I
know I dont have to download it, yes I know that this is cooker and meant
to be unstable, but by people like me downloading it and trying it, thats
how bugs, etc get fixed and the software made better. Besides, they did
it with kde.

again, this is just a suggestion, not a flame. I use cooker exclusivly
and report bugs when I find them (if they havent been reported already).
If the gnome1.4/gnome2 things isnt/wont be changed, thats just less
software I can help make better. and that would make me sad :)

well, anyway, thanks for the reply

[Cooker] gnome1.4 v gnome2

2002-03-28 Thread daz

I know Frederic Crozat is on vacation/guadec next week, however, if any
other cooker developers that work on gnome are floating around, please
respond.

I was wondering why there isnt a parrallel gnome1.4/gnome2 installation
like there is for kde2/kde3? kde3 installes in /opt, gnome2 replaces
crucial gnome1.4 files, like 'gnome-panel', 'gnome-session', etc. Whas
this just overlooked, or is it intentional? If it was intentional, can it
be changed? I like testing gnome2, but its not ready for regular use and
its nice to be able to go back to gnome1.4 with out having to spend an
hour uninstalling, then reinstalling stuff.

any idea why docklets arent working with gnome-panel? Instead of showing
up in the status dock, they show up as a small window just like any other
app. 2 that I know of :xmms-status-dock and gabber.

Unfortunatly, i need it to build some software that I want to try:
http://prokyon3.sourceforge.net/

I admin, im not a big qt fan, but this software looks promising. isnt it
possible to install a working qt3-devel without the actual db's installed?
i.e. perl db modules dont *require* mysql and pg to be installed, but the
libraries and clients. shouldnt this be possible for qt3? again, Im
asking out of ignorance here, but it just doesnt make sense for the
current way (not blaming mandrake developers if this is the case).

[Cooker] qt3 dependencies?

2002-02-26 Thread daz

using rpmdrake and urpmi, I want to install libqt3 and libqt3-devel. why
does:

MySQL (not installed)
MySQL-client (update)
libmysql10 (update)
libmysq10-devel (update)
lpgperl (not installed)
libpgsql2 (not installed)
libpgtcl2 (not installed)
libunixODBC2 (not installed)
libunixODBC2-devel (not installed)
postgresql (not installed)
postgresql-devel (not installed)
sfio (not installed)

have to be installed/updated for this? I could understand if I wanted to
*update* a package that depended on qt3, or update qt3 and an *installed*
package that depended on it needed to be updated, but having to install
completely unrelated packages that arent installed yet?

[Cooker] beta3 post install notes

2002-02-24 Thread daz

'aloo,
After switching from mandrake cooker (actually beta 2 with cooker
updates) to redhat 7.2 with the latest ximian updates, etc, I have moved
back to mandrake (now beta3, though). You guys rock. mandrake in my
opinion is 100% better.

Anyway, here are my notes on the install/post-install:

1) install was flawless.
2) post-install: using diskdrake to add a mount for an smb share,
diskdrake doesnt put the username password in fstab correct. i.e. I set
it up with the username of 'joe' with a password of 'blow'. diskdrake
wrote it in fstab as 'username=blow, password=joe'. just a little
backwards.

3) after using diskdrake to make the mount (and before editing fstab to
make it correct) I tried to mount the share and got this error:

tdb((null): tdb_open_ex: could not open file
/var/cache/samba/unexpected.tdb no such file or directory

4) gaim: I noticed in ximian's version (.43) of gaim, there is a
'gaim_applet' that is missing from mandrakes 5.1 version. Reading the
README from gaim, it seems that mandrakes version isnt compiled with
--enable-panel. Is it possible to get it repackages as such? Also,
the older version of gaim will save offline messages and then give them to
me when I sign on.

Other than those 4 things, beta3 is awesome.

Thanks for all the hard work.

[Cooker] feature request for rpmdrake

2002-02-01 Thread daz

I have a couple of feature requests for rpmdrake:

1) if it errors out, tell me why (i.e. max. anon ftp reached, let me know
instead of just "due to some error")

2) depends-on and is-depended-on tabs. I would like to know what package
depends on a particular package and vice versa. I know there are command
line tools for this already. I would like to see it in rpmdrake.

Thanks

[Cooker] problem with 8.2 beta

2002-01-29 Thread daz

All the bugs I have found have already been reported except this one:

usb with mass-storage driver doesnt work too well. Ill try to describe as
much as I can.

Fresh boot up of system, plug the usb device into the usb port (archos 6g
jukebox). usb recognizes a device, but doesnt load the usb-storage
driver. I modprobe usb-storage. a little better, but the dependant
module sd_mod doesnt get loaded. so I load the sd_mod. better, but now
the kernel doesnt recognize usb-storage. so I unload/reload that.
whoo-hoo! usb device at sda1!. I mount the driver with out any problems.
I try to edit the id3 tags on an mp3 (doesnt matter which software I use,
or which mp3. this always happens) and I get:

I imagine this is probable a kernel bug and not a mandrake specific one,
however I do have 2 questions:

1) what if any patches are in the 2.4.17-10 kernel for 8.2 beta? The
reason
I ask is that I had no problem using 2.4.17, but when I upgraded to the
2.4.17 preempt patch, this happened.

2) why am I having the module problems? i.e. why when I modprobe
usb-storage, does sd_mod not get insmod'ed, and then why does it not
recognise usb-storage?

I hope I have given all the info I needed, please let me know if you need
any more, or if im on drugs.
