Re: [Cooker] Nvidia 3.3.6 / 4.2.0 choice on install

2002-09-10 Thread dcd

Ooops! damn foot in mouth again.

Rephrase that, to what I meant, instead of what I said. (Yes I do
know the definition of "FREE" )

Wouldn't it be a better policy to refer people to, or notify them of,
the availability of the Nvidea 3D drivers,
and install the current XFree86 4.2.. drivers rather than have them
install poor quality "experimental" drivers during installation.

Currently the inclusion of the option to install poor 3d drivers is
detrimental to the distibutions reputation. However including a
reference to a free download (albiet, proprietry Software ) would not be
nearly so bad.
Hey! on the upside if enough people then complain to them(NVidea) they
may even fix the drivers.

Re: [Cooker] Suggestion cdrom recognition

Hi,
Thanks I need to upgrade again, my version of mcc doesn't have that yet.
Yes, in the past I've done similar mod's to my machine but it doesn't
always work.
Usually happens when it's for someone else and it's not easy to get newbies
to modify the system via command line if it didn't work straight up.

dcd.
ps Maybe in part because Iv'e only just passed newbie stage into
tinkerer myself

Re: [Cooker] Suggestion cdrom recognition

2002-09-05 Thread dcd

Yes , Misunderstood.

I am talking about the additional cdrom(s) that may be on the system

I agree the burners have been installed under scsi-ide and work well
However many people still have cdrom's or dvd's that they want to record
from and
these are not set up as scsi-ide and therefor not recognised from the
burning programs

[Cooker] Suggestion cdrom recognition

2002-09-05 Thread dcd

  Hi,
Not sure where this should be addressed to but here goes.

I've been using mandrake for a while now myself and the most common
complaint I get from other new users
is as follows
It recognised my cdburner (and called it scsi-ide)
But I cant get any of the cdburning programs to recognise my cdrom(atapi
ide) so I can burn on the fly like i do in windows.

My suggestion is that detection of a cd burner, then alters any atapi
cdroms detected to be scsi-ide links also.
Can these co-exist with the std setup, ie links created but not obvious
at the GUI level except when detected by programs such as xcdroast.

dcd
IMHO this would make the whole cdrom cdburning experience much easier
especially as most howtos convert your cdrom to scsi-ide are written
for the old /dev system no longer used by Mandrake
