I made a discovery about the unbootable CD. The CD was written on a rewritable
CD. When booting, it would initially boot ok but would later start having the
read errors and would eventually fail. I made a image from that same CD which
wouldn't install correctly. I then wrote the image back to a CD-R. When I
boot with the CD-R everything seems to work fine.

So the problem does seem to be hardware related. My CD drive is about 2 years
old but has problems reading rewriteable CD.

The log window shows:

BTW, I get the same errors when trying to install Mandrake 9.0.
I currently have Mandrake 8.1 installed

FYI, I had the very same problem when I tried to boot with a rewritable CD.
When I copied the same image to a CD-R the problem went away.

After further testing, I now believe that these errors are due to hardware
problems on my computer. I have noticed read errors using other software also.

I tried to boot with the option ide1=nodma but the problem still persists. One
difference was that I saw the message:

error in exec of stage2 :-(
Trying to execute '/usr/bin/runinstall2' from the installation volume,
the following fatal error occurred
FATAL ERROR IN STAGE1: No such file or directory
