Too bad, because many users would be attracted to Mandrake by goodlooking apps: imagine being able to set Nuvola, Smokey-blue or Grand-canyon! Currently, I edit ~/.gtkrc-2.0 by hand, but this cannot be asked to the ordinary user. The other options are not feasible either: 1. calling the gnome-control-center by command line does not work (why?) and the ordinary user cannot be asked to use the command line anyway. 2. you could add switch2 to the distro, but beware that it currently does not work (because it creates a bad .gtkrc-2.0).

Here is a run down of the steps (and the bugs): -Start the computer (e100 is connected to the network) -Plug in the device -Device seems to be recognised by driver usbvnetr : ../src/usb/vnetusba.c: usb eth1 initialized and registered (IMPROVEMENT: some visual feedback or sound on this would be great, especially for newbies) -run Drakconnect -Device is there under eth1 but driver says e100 (BUG) -Create new profile called stuff -Stuff is not availab;le in the list of profiles (BUG) -Create new profile called stuff -Select stuff in the list of profiles (it's now available) -Half the time this crashes Drakconnect (think it might be DHCP on eth0 taking 2 minutes to time out, hint hint) (BUG:reduce timeout for DHCP) -Launch the wizard (let's try it out !!) -Use auto detection and Expert mode are checked -Next -LAN connection -Next -We are going to configure teh connection - (IMPROVEMENT: yeah I know, that why i pressed the Launch Wizard button) -Next -Found Intel... Pro 100 network, do you have another one? (BUG: where is my vnetusba device???) -Yes - Next -Select usbvnet_rfmd -Next -Another one?, No, Next -Config eth0(e100), i set up static address -Next -Config eth1(e100) (BUG: it should be usbvnet_rfmd) -Setup as DHCP (BUG: where is the wireless options configuration???) -Next -Zeroconf - nothing, hostname: i set up stuffy, Next -Next -Proxies - none -Next -Config complete, apply??? yes - Next -Network restarted, do I want to restart??? Yes - Next -Computer hangs for a couple of minutes (BUG: wireless is trying to get address from DHCP but I haven't configured the wireless options so where is it going to get it from??? Nowhere. Reduce the timeout, please) -Congratulations (BUG: Drakconnect has blatantly not been able to configure DHCP, where is the feedback on that) -BUG: ok, I have two network interfaces connected, where do I specify which one I use for connecting to the internet in the wizard??? -Finish -Click Configure Hostname -Enter the DNS server and gateway (BUG: what i they are supplied by DHCP i.e. linked to the previous bug, let teh user choose which interface is used to connect to the internet) -I enter the manual values - i know them -Finish -Click Configure Internet Access -BUG: gateway, i just entered that, something better would be a list of available devices and let the user choose, which one is used to connect to teh internet -Click Ok -Click Ok again to exit Drakconnect (BUG: again, running DHCP and waiting for timeout) Now two situations: I am a newbie and I have no idea how to configure wireless settings and I can't find any tool to do so - I ditch MDK 9.2 and go back to Windblows world. I am me and i wat to support MDK, so I manually run iwconfig to set up the right iwconfig parameters, ok, wireless is up, now i still need DHCP !! (BUG: where am i meant to enter the wireless settings so they are saved ?? also, how about multiple wireless profiles) -Click on Drakconnect again -BUG: eth1 has disappeared -Relaunch the whole wizard with teh smae bugs :( -BUG: although i specify I have a usbvnet_rfmd device, I cannot configure it (Wizard only does eth0) :-( It would be nice if this could be fixed, I'll check this bug regularly because it really matters to me so I am willing to give as much info as possible.

The same wlan device is commonly used in IBM notebooks (cf. e.g. http://www.balukoff.com/~stephen/a30p/ where descriptions of how to get the wlan device to work with linux are given). There is also an integrated SiS900 10/100 Ethernet controller (assigned to eth0; the installation process assigns the wlan device to eth1). /proc/pci identifies the wlan device as: Bus 0, device 5, function 0: Network controller: Harris Semiconductor Prism 2.5 Wavelan chipset (rev 1). IRQ 9. Master Capable. Latency=64. Prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xe8006000 [0xe8006fff]. The vendor device code is 1260:3873 During installation (or later, in DrakConnect), the device is set up with the orinoco_pci kernel module. The module is loaded without incident, but once the system tries connect to the device (e.g. during the installation's network configuration step, unless one skips this step), the system locks up completely, requiring a hard reset (as everything is installed already, MDK 9.1 boots OK afterwards - but without internet connection set up, even on eth0). According to http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/Jean_Tourrilhes/Linux/Orinoco.html under the header Issues and release notes, Prism2.5 PCI cards are not supported and neither are miniPCI based on the PCI card (and not using a PCI-PCMCIA bridge). SuSE 8.1 does the same thing as MDK 9.1 as regards identification of the wlan device and (erroneous) relation to orinoco_pci, but as the SuSE installation only attempts to configure the main ethernet controller (i.e. no attempt is made to setting up the wlan device), the result is not as disastrous (at least for a newbie linux user!) as with the MDK 9.1 installation. Red Hat 9 doesn't seem to include any wlan kernel modules at all, so RH9 simply ignores the wlan device. As MDK 9.1 comes with the linux-wlan-ng kernel modules as well (prism2_pci etc.), I tried to modprobe prism2_pci - however getting the error described by another user (with the same wlan device) here: http://www.nclug.org/pipermail/nclug/2003-January/004856.html Perhaps the system assumes a PCI-PCMCIA bridge device rather than a native PCI device? A _temporary_ solution to the problem, would be to make a patch to the MDK 9.1 installation (and HardDrake / DrakConnect) so that it _ignores_ the device rather than attempting to use the orinoco drivers (which locks up the system). A _permanent_ solution would be to configure the linux-wlan-ng or, possibly, the host-ap driver to work with the device.

Suggestion : dhcpcd is an heresy IMHO, asking for the static IP may be better in order to configure (and establish) the connection, which would happen this way /sbin/ifconfig eth1 @ip_static netmask 255.255.255.0 up /sbin/route add default gw IP_GATEWAY ip_static should be asked to the user (there's *always* a way to know it, either with an URL or with a mail from the ISP) I haven't yet found a way to determine IP_GATEWAY automatically : it depends on the interface which is mounted. This static manner of connection is correct for Telefonica IP fija in Spain as the eagle-usb driver - formerly known as adiusbadsl - works with Sagem Fast800, Comtrend CT-350 and AT-AR215 as well, modems distributed by many ISP worldwide France, Spain, Germany, Poland, England to name a few... (VCI may have to be adapted, though).

I have a router and I use drakconnect to set up my adsl connection with dhcp. THE PROBLEM: Drakconnect apparently sets up something wrong, since kde windows take about 5 seconds to open, and gnome complains that /etc/hosts is wrong. On the other hand, if I choose a static ip assignment and manual DNS assignment (as opposed to dhcp), windows open instantly. The difference is huge. POSSIBLE REASONS: I'm no expert, but I am going to report what others told me. :-) 1) Some kde developer told me it must be a problem not in dhcp, but in dns. unfortunately, drakconnect doesn't allow me to specify dns if I choose dhcp. 2) Someone else told me that the hostname does not resolve because the /etc/hosts file produced by drakconnect is broken, and I should manually specify a fully qualified hostname in /etc/hosts, together with dhcp. He told me that dhcp allows the hostname to be specified OR assigned automatically. But it seems to me that drakconnect does not allow a hostname to be specified with dhcp. Maybe this is the problem. I hope I' ve been of help. cheers!

For some reason it configures an ethernet0 and an ethernet1 but when using drakconnect to reconfigure it only shows the ethernet0 (ethernet card). This causes problems when booting because it always waits and gives an error message when starting the interfaces (although the do work). The end result is that drakconnect can't be used to configure my wireless card (aka, SSID's and WEP keys and mode). Platform: Delle Latitude c840 (built in ethernet and built in dell latitude truemobile wireless) sometimes drakconnect does not even show any connected network cards ?
